I've now upgraded three machines from 10.04 to 10.10, and they all share the same problem: resizing windows its next to impossible! I am finding it very difficult to place the mouse cursor at the exact point on the bottom right of any window to cause it to change to the resize cursor.
View 4 RepliesIm running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.
This isn't a HUGE deal, just a little annoying. When I move the cursor to the edge of a window to resize it, i only get the resize arrow in a very small area and it takes me several tries to get it just right. Is there anyway to broaden the resize area threshold or something?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have verified using yum that I have the most uptodate glut, freeglut, freeglut-devel etc., yet when I compile Example 2-6 from the Red Book at http://www.glprogramming.com/red/chapter02.html#name16, I get a window that is too small for the program output, includes display from other windows, and will not redraw after being resized.
I get slightly better behavior with the SGI sample program mentioned in the same book, 'checkers.c'. Again, the initial size is too small, but at least it will resize and redraw the checkerboards entirely inside the resized window. What is going on here? Is this some bug in glut? I can't see anything obviously wrong in their glut initialization, which looks like:

Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing.As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations.If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.

...it reads that in the Ubuntu install menu I have to select "manually edit partition table", which I have found and selected, and then I should supposedly be able to edit the size of the desired partition. However, no option for changing the partition size appears. Instead I get a menu where I am asked to determine how I want to mount the partition (as ext4, ext3, etc.) and if I want to format it. However nowhere it mentions anything related to "change size" or similar.
I am dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu on my laptop, and I'm trying to resize my ubuntu partition to make it larger. When I boot from the GParted Live disc , however, It only recognizes the existence of my 160 Gig windows NTFS partition which has ~15 Gigs of free space, which I want to reformat and expand ubuntu into (I freed that space by shrinking my windows partition from inside windows 7). I know my Ubuntu partitions are there (I'm in Ubuntu now, plus my HD is 200 Gigs not 160), but I can't see them.
I have a feeling this has something to do with my resizing of my windows partition from windows, but I'm not sure.

I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows7. Instructions I've found on how to resize partitions tell me to open gparted and shrink things from there. However, I can't seem to do this because:
-I can't expand the windows partition because i first need to shrink the linux partition
-I can't shrink the linux partition because it is mounted
-I can't unmount the linux partition because it is being used.
So how exactly do I expand my Windows partition?
When Karmic came out I made the decision to leave OSX and become fulltime linux. The one thing I took for granted is OSX's ability to resize a partition to create space for another partition. I am wondering if this is possible? The reason is I want to put all my storage data (i.e. papers, pictures, music, etc) into a partition separate from the OS. I seek to do this so that I can test out Lucid and subsequent alpha's/beta's.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my first time using Ubuntu, so I don't really know much about it. I tried installing it from a DVD earlier, but it wouldn't work. Then I tried on my flash drive, still didn't work. I realized that the downloaded iso (Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit) was only 411 MB instead of 698 MB. I then tried to download it again, and it was the correct size.
I booted it off my flash drive, and tried to install. It asked how much of the HDD space I wanted to reserve for Ubuntu, I think. I can't quite remember, but I dragged it over to 30 GB. Now I realize that I don't actually need that much, oh well. I got an error, can't quite remember what it said, but then the same window came up again asking to resize the partition. There was only about 20 GB availiable this time (instead of the 320 before), I reserved 6 GB, and clicked continue. I checked back after like 3 hours and the window is white and frozen.
Is there any way I can restart my laptop and correct the issue without messing anything up? If it matters, I'm installing it on an Alienware M11x laptop.

Some things happened and I ended up having to put Vista back on here. I want to put Ubuntu 9.10 back on my laptop in a dual boot, but it will not let me install. When I try to use the live cd and install, I get a Resize Operation Failure when trying to set up the new partition for Ubuntu while keeping the Windows partition.
The failure reads:

When I try to use the Wubi installer, I get an error as well. I get:

and then get a link to a log of the error.

I have an old Omnibook my Dad let me have and I wanted some version of linux on it so naturally I am TRYING to install Damn Small Linux. Here is what I have done so far...
1. I took the hard drive out and used a usb to IDE cable and used the damn small linux live cd on my desktop and installed DSL on the hard drive using the USB HDD tool.
2. I put the hard drive back in the Omnibook and started the boot process
3. When I get to the desktop the screen is full of pink and green lines and I can make it the outlines of the desktop and the icons but cannot read them.
4. When I use the boot floppy to try and boot it and use fb800x600 cheatcode I get all the way to where it is supposed to load the desktop and it gives me this error:

So I installed Wubi with Ubuntu 10.04 and chose the standard partition size (8GB?) and now I am running out of disc space. How do I resize this partition?

As mentioned here I am planning on installing with encryption. This involves using LVM in the partition scheme.

However, I notice that GParted doesn't seem to have any support for LVM, which is going to be a pain in the rear if I subsequently try to add Ubuntu to the Mandriva boot setup.
The problem I have with DiskDrake (Mandrivas partition editor) is that it only seems to be able to put partitions at the beginning of the drive and it doesn't seem to be able to move partitions. e.g. if I want to create a new partition at the end for swap and leave some unallocated space in the middle for my future Ubuntu installation I am stuck. GParted allows me to create at the end or effectively move it by resizing the beginning and end of the partition.
DiskDrake allows me to create and edit LVM partitions.
Is there perhaps another partition editor that does both? Or maybe a development version of one that does it? Or some option I am missing?

The problem is that I can't resize my home partition to fill the rest of the disk. I've tried using a live-cd and booting from my 160gb hard disk but I still can't resize the partition.

I have a 500GB hard disk, /dev/sda. On it, there is /dev/sda1 for /boot, /dev/sda2 for an LVM PV (physical volume), and /dev/sda3 for another /boot (multiple Linux distros, one boot partition for grub legacy, another for grub2). so the LVM2 partition, /dev/sda2, is taking up ~465GiB. I want to add another OS (non-Linux), so I resized the *lvm2 physical volume* to 320GiB, successfully, using pvresize.
However, I now need to resize the partition so the lvm2 physical volume only just fits on it, ie to 320GiB. My plan of action is to use gparted (the partition table is GUID, so fdisk won't work), to first delete the partition from the partition table, then re-add it but this time with a smaller value (~320GiB). The problem is that I need to know exactly how many MiB/cylinders the physical volume is taking up. So, I run:

"preupgrade now requires at least 167MB" means more space could be needed, and I'm unclear if the above is sufficient.
I'm on a work desktop and im just wondering what the chances are of data loss if i resize my paritions i have 2 NTFS 1 10GB and 1 64GB (Not sure why but thats how it is) I want to take 30GB from the 2nd partition and add onto the main 10GB. Is it only Gparted that has a chance of Data Loss or is that with all parition editors, its just that alot of NTFS windows progams indicate that there software is safe like this one for example url.
