Installation :: Get Debian Onto An Old Laptop?

I have an old Hitachi laptop, PII-266, 256MB RAM, 20GB HD, 1024x768 screen. It has a floppy drive, a usb (1) port, and in-built 10/100BaseT ethernet. I cannot boot from USB, or ethernet directly. I would like to boot from floppy and install over network. Is this possible?

Debian Installation :: Install Debian Next To Ubuntu 10.04 On Laptop?

Oct 9, 2010

I have a question: I'd like to install Debian next to Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. I've been searching on the web but I can't figure out what to download and what to install. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1355LC that runs on an AMD Athlon XP processor. Also when I install Debian, will it recognise my Linksys WUSB 54 wireless device? (I've read somewhere that it could be that WLAN connections aren't supported with the net instal Cd) I know there's a lot that I'm asking, but I really want to learn more about Debian.

Debian :: Moving SSD With Installation To Another Laptop

Sep 24, 2015

I've installed years back Debian on my laptop. Last year i did upgrade, i putted an ssd in my old laptop which works great with debian.

Now I bought a new laptop, to replace my old one. Because my new laptop doesn't have an SSD installed, i want to replace the harddrive by the SSD from my old laptop.

Now so said, so done. I replaced the hard drive easy by the ssd. Now if i boot the new laptop with the ssd installed i'm getting message from EUFI/BIOS that there is no OS installed on the ssd???

Debian is installed on it! If a place back the ssd in my old laptop, it's booting like it should, so it's working. Why is EUFI/BIOS think there is no OS installed? Debian is installed on the ssd so it should work i think?

after chrooting into the usb stick with the live dvd-rw and installing grub2 there again cause the installation couldn't do it without chrooting first.. I wasn't able to boot from the laptop I installed Debian with but I could on my Desktop PC.

I wondered if you needed a copy of my grub.conf? so here is the pastebinnet of /boot/grub/grug.conf

Debian Installation :: Unable To Install In HP DV7 Laptop (ACPI Error)

Is there a boot command I can input to override this? I tried removing the battery slot, but the only difference is that that message does not appear, but the setup hangs anyway.

Debian Installation :: Using Squeeze 64b On Dell Latitude D830 With Intel I965GM Laptop?

Aug 17, 2010

I'm trying to start using Debian Squeeze 64b on my laptop, which is Dell Latitude D830 with Intel i965GM.

After Debian installation, when system should display some nice background and window which please me to log in, I see my screen gets blank, fuzzy, blank again, ...and after several times finaly all hangs. Surprisingly mouse pointer is displayed nicely and works. I can't use network on Debian becouse of windows authorization program which i can run in wine on KDE. This works on Kubuntu.

What I did already:

I installed KUBUNTU 10.04 LTS and it's doing job well.

I installed Debian Squeeze with options:

- enabled:base system, laptop

- disabled:graphical environment

After instalation I logged in on root account and did:

1. aptitude install xserver-xorg xbase-clients xfonts-base xterm
2. aptitude install kdebase kde-i18n-pl
3. aptitude install kdm
4. reboot
5. problem occurs

@2: Googling everywhere i found several installation guides pointing to instal pure KDE by installing kde-core package, but it seems Squeeze does not have it.

@3: Unfortunately this command did not install nor update anything.

All I want to do is to install pure Debian with xorg and kde core (not full kde package) for later customization.

I tried to:

- generate xorg.conf (X -configure) and place it at /etc/X11/

- use xorg.conf working for other people in web.

- dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

- googling & forum search for my specific problem and for errors found in syslog; with no working solution.

Fedora Installation :: 10 Upgrade / Installation Failing On Presario F700 Laptop

May 29, 2009

I've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -

1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm

2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm

im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.

Debian Configuration :: Can't Ssh Into Laptop

Until a while ago, I had to problems sshing into my laptop, whose static IP is 192.168.1.64. I scp'ed a few files from it to my desktop, whose static IP is 192.168.1.22. Then, suddenly, I started getting a "destination host unreachable" error. I also get the same error when I try to ping the laptop. I verified that the ssh daemon was running on the laptop, and even rebooted, but I am still getting the error.

I didn't install any upgrades or edit any configuration files on the laptop between the time that ssh was working and when it stopped working.

Otherwise, networking works on the laptop. In fact, I am writing this post from it. It is as if my laptop suddenly decided to block incoming traffic.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Installation On A Laptop?

Dec 11, 2010

I'm a complete an utter newbie on this forum, and indeed to linux/ubuntu in general so pardon me in advance if some of my question makes no sense/sounds silly/makes you want to exterminate all noobs. Basically, I've had bad experiences (i.e. had to use my recovery system) trying to install a dual boot system with OpenSuse and want to get some sound advice before I proceed with installing Ubuntu, instead of having to go through the agony of formatting and recovering Vista HP again, and consequently trying to teach it all over again how to suck less.

Okay, so less waffle and more questioning. Background information is that the laptop is a Compaq F560. It has at present Win Vista 32 HP on the primary partition (C), with a recovery partition on (D). It has a very basic, almost un-alterable BIOS, 1.5Gb of RAM, 120Gb HD, standard CD rom, integral nVidia 6100m graphics card, a broadcom wireless network adaptor and various other bits n' bobs.

When installing OpenSuse last time I found 2 huge flaws with my method. First one is, that I didn't have wired networking available to me at the time, and foolishly forgot to get hold of the wireless adaptor drivers before installing Suse. No biggy you say, just go back to windows and download from there. Great, except I'd bozzed up the MBR too, so couldn't do that. Suse, for it's part, ran fine. Very smooth. I just couldn't do anything with it.

What I'm now looking to do, is give Ubuntu a shot, as part of a dual boot system, with Vista on the other half. I want to make vista the default boot system. I DONT want to have to go through my compaq's recovery system again, if possible. To meet these objectives, Ultimately, I'd like to transfer all of my operations across to Ubuntu, but I'm too windows-dependent at the moment, though some sort of windows-emulator wouldn't be a bad idea if anyone knows where/how/what.

Debian :: Laptop Freezes When Going Into Suspend

Sep 30, 2015

I'm running stock Debian 8.2 with GNOME DE on an Acer ES1-512 series laptop. Whenever I attempt to go into suspend, either by closing the laptop lid or holding ALT when clicking the power button in the top-left system menu on the desktop, my laptop briefly flashes the default GNOME lock screen, fades to black, and then hangs there. Usually, when my laptop would actually suspend, the power indicator light would change from blue to orange and slowly fade in and out. However, now it just sits on blue. There is no way to re-awaken the laptop from this state, and I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.

Running Code: Select allgrep -i error /var/log/messages gives me:

Debian Configuration :: Laptop Fan Doesn't Run?

Jul 14, 2011

I have installed Squeeze on my laptop, an Acer 5315.The fans never turn on, and the laptop eventually overheats and shuts off. This is not a hardware problem, because Lenny, on another partition, works fine.I have poked around, and discovered that the temperature sensor, as reported by "acpi -V", and in /sys/devices/virtual/thermal, does not get updated. It seems to get read at boot, but the reading never changes, no matter how hot the machine gets.

Specifically, if the machine is cool, acpi reports 40 degrees C, and goes on reporting the same number until the machine overheats and shuts down.On the other hand, if the machine is hot (because it's been running without the fan), and I reboot, then the reading at boot is usually either 75 or 85, and the fan turns on during boot, and stays on, at high speed, until the next reboot, and the reading never changes during the whole time

Debian :: Laptop Brightness Gets Set To Maximum On Boot

Jun 10, 2010

My laptop brightness gets set to maximium each boot.

Just wondering if this is the case for other laptop users. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 (GeForce 9300M GS) and am running Testing.

Ideally I'd like it to remember my last setting (which is usually the lowest). It'd be nice not having to turn it down each time I reboot/power-on.

It actually starts off at a low setting but during the boot process (before gdm and just after the "Waiting for /dev" line I believe) it suddenly gets set to max.
