Installation :: Bringing Ubuntu Into Network And Thus Online

Jul 31, 2010

I have an old computer with 128 megs of memory and one hard drive of 120 gigs. I have gone back and forth between installing Ubuntu and Puppy. Right now, despite advice against it because of the limited memory, I am thinking of sticking with Ubuntu. Puppy has some problems but that is not what I want to address right now. What I want to ask about in this discussion thread is how to get Ubuntu onto the Internet.

I think I get it, but I want to be sure. There is a menu option called "Network Connections" and it opens a window that has several tabs. Since I have a wired connection, I click on the "Wired" tab where it shows my connection in a list box. When I click on Edit it opens another window that displays a MAC address and there is an "Apply" button. When I click on this, there is an Authenticate window that opens up and it prompts me for a password. Is this password that it is asking for the same thing as the password that my router uses?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Active But Cant Connect Online?

Feb 20, 2010

Yesterday I moved my modem (wireless) to my living room so the PS3 detected a better signal. In doing so, I had to run a new ethernet cable from my living room where the modem is into my office where the computer is. I use ubuntu 9.10

For some reason I cannot connect to the internet now. When I scroll over the connection, it says wire connection 1 is active. I have my settings manually set. I did notice the MAC address field is blank...

I didn't have an issue before, but with changing cables and whatnot, something got messed up somehow.

OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Get Online - Whoda Guessed?

Mar 16, 2011

This has been going on for a couple of months. I keep going into the body shop and returning with the concentration span of a clam. But, better now. My home network router, switch were walked on at some time, losing some connectivity. As w "work-around", where I wouldn't have to crawl around and trace stuff, I decided to go wireless. The bottom line here, is, not only did that not work, but I had changed my net settings to where, it seems nothing would ever work. After crawling and testing the ethernet connection to my #1 box (opensuse) was OK. STILL no joy. I was @ 11.2. "repair system", and reinstall did not work.

Next, I tried a network install of 11.3. During this, the installer noticed no connectivity, and asked if it could overwrite files to work.. I said "yes". I must have been writing to /tmp or a chrooted dir, because it worked - but it was not persistent, and failed on reboot. Yes, I then tried a DVD install of 11.4, which could not figure how to connect at all. I am almost 70 , and remember back to when I was using slackware 0.83 ) and have had Linuxlife pretty easy lately. I /used to/ remember all of the files and interactions in getting eth0 working. Maybe not now.

The BEST thing y'all could do for me would be to post an executible, or script that would allow me to get back online. I have really been pleased with osuse through my years using it. I know the economic forces may soon affect Novell, but I hope not. If any heavy hitter needs the output of ifconfig or anything else, tell me.

OpenSUSE Network :: Online Update Does Not Connect To The Internet

I cannot use the online update and any other web repository because I got the following error while using the online update:

the translation is:

Code:

Error during downloading (curl) from 'http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/11.3/repodata/repomd.xml':

Error message: couldn't connect to host

I would point out that any other application that needs accessing the internet is working correctly.

Networking :: WPA2 Network - Ndiswrapper Wireless - Ubuntu 9.04 - Reset Router To Get Online

Apr 1, 2010

I've been having a network problem that I've been able to temporarily solve by rebooting the router, but even that can be shaky at times, and it can sometimes disturb others' internet activites, so I'd really like to tackle this while I can. I had an old thread about this, but it's ancient history by now, and plus which, I've got a bit more Linux experience and patience than I did before.

The basic problem is that NetworkManager will associate and connect to my home wireless network, but a) it won't let me ping the router or anywhere else ("Destination Host Unreachable"), and b) the connection lasts for maybe a couple minutes at most. If I reset the router, however, 9 times out of 10 it will associate and connect successfully and I can get online, but I have to run a constant ping to the router with a 10-second interval, otherwise it drops the connection, unless I'm doing a lot of other heavy network activity.

ping 192.168.1.1 (the router):

Code:

I've tried wpa_supplicant, but this is what I get (it's apparently unsuccessful...? ESSID/MAC addresses censored where necessary):

Code:

The last prompt line is included because I cancelled it myself; it didn't abort on its own. If left unmonitored, it basically keeps doing this over and over, with no visible network activity at all.

With NetworkManager, I can keep selecting the network's ESSID over and over, and it seems to reconnect, but I still can't ping out anywhere. I'm using a Netgear WN111v1 wireless adapter with ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers. I have no idea what the chipset is, and I doubt that Linux drivers exist for it, even if I knew what it was. The router is using WPA2 security (hence my trying wpa_supplicant)

lsusb:

Code:

ifconfig wlan0 (while connected; IP/MAC addresses censored where needed):

Code:

ifconfig wlan0 (while not connected; IP/MAC addresses censored where needed):

Code:

Code:

I only include this for format checking purposes. The commented out "psk" is the actual text passphrase, while the uncommented one is (presumably) a hex representation of the same key. Is this correct? I've never done this with wpa_supplicant before, I've only used NetworkManager (which is a pain in the @$$ because it requires X to run, and so it disconnects any time I log out/back in ).

Is there any hope of getting my wireless connection permanently working, so that I don't have to reset the router every time I need to reboot or log out/back in?

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Not Bringing Up Console?

Aug 7, 2011

I'm having an issue with Ubuntu 10.04 server, where it is not bringing up a console on the local machine.

The only display on the local screen (and in /var/log/boot.log) is:

Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean, 100725/2342912 files, 781590/9357824 blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (595) terminated with status 4

Hitting <alt>-<f[anything]> just brings up a blank screen with a single flashing cursor, and no login prompt.

The ureadahead message sounds like the classic Windows error: "The operation could not be completed because of the following error: The operation completed successfully." So ureadahead isn't the problem.

Also... ssh works, but other services (apache, mysql, smbd, nfs-kernel-server, etc) need to be started manually.

OpenSUSE Network :: Error In Repo Initialization While Running Online Updates

Mar 18, 2011

Earlier I have no problems when I install opensuse. After installation the network runs and I can run online updating in yast for the system. But since a few version it doesn't work after installation and I don't know why. I think maybe the errors could happen because I have no
internet connection. Today I install 11.4 and get this message when I want to run online updates in yast.

There is an error in the repository initialization
'repo-update' [URL]

I think this problem stars with 11.1 or 11.2.

Hardware :: Bringing Power Down On Home Server?

Sep 19, 2010

I just got my electricity bill for July & August and noticed a dramatic increase in my consumption. Basically, the amount of electricity has almost doubled (from 433 to 748kWh) and the increase happens mainly between 5pm and 11pm, as well as during weekends... I did not have to search for too long before I pointed out the issue... My new home server. It is configured to auto WOL at 5PM and auto shutdown (Cron) at 11PM. It also runs 24h/day on weekends...

Here's the server's config:

Hardware:
MSI Platinum K9N mobo
AMD Athlon64 CPU
1GB DDR2 Ram (2X 512MB)

[code]....

Everything else is only "run-on-demand" or scripts... I am searching for suggestions on how to minimize the power requirements. The video card is going to be replaced soon, by a standard PCI 4MB videocard. Next I will get rid of the 80GB & 750GB HDD's to be replaced by a 1.5TB HDD...

Slackware :: Wicd No Longer Bringing Up Wlan0?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently started using this laptop as a host for tinkering with vmware. I have wicd installed on it, which normally brings up wlan0 and connects to the nearest configured wireless lan automatically.

Vmware has installed another, virtual, NIC on the host, called vmnet8. I configured it in /rc.d/rc.inet1.conf with a static IP.

Now when I boot up the laptop vmnet8 starts up and running and correctly configured, but wlan0 doesn't. I have the wicd icon in my systray but it doesn't find a network, even when i click on it and refresh etc. I have to open a terminal and "ifconfig wlan0 up" in order to get the NIC up. Then wicd works fine.

Networking configuration in Slackware looks like a bit of a nightmare frankly (why i usually use wicd!) so I thought i'd ask you chaps before messing about too much.

I tried adding the info manually but then the entire network wouldn't start. I had it configured as a static IP and I know the commands were correct due to them working on the LAN card. Networking :: Will Bringing Down Loopback Interface Make Whole Server To Go Down?

Dec 14, 2010

I have a client's linux server where someone added a script which sends spam mails from the server's local loopback address (127.0.0.1) all my seniors worked on it and couldn't trace the script on the server this issue was going for a week, now I have an idea to bring down the loopback interface of that particular server(ya, that was not a permanent solution but just had an idea), but my support manager told that it will bring the whole server down(so far as i have learn't loopback address is used only for testing the NIC card's functionality), is that really bring the server down.?. How ever i tried this using a test machine all the connections works fine even after i bring down the loopback interface. As my client's server is a production server i can't test it there without clear knowledge, can any one help me out whether will it bring down the server or will it cause any side effects on it(i know that you guys are experts so i am asking it here)?

Ubuntu Security :: Prevent Fork Bombs From Bringing The System To Grinding Halt?

Mar 18, 2011

So I am basically just curious about this, but is there a way to prevent fork bombs from bringing the system to grinding halt in Ubuntu, without setting hard limits on the resources available to users? I read about fork bombs on Wikipedia, and being the masochist I am (and not having any unsaved work), I tried entering those 13 characters into terminal. Wow. I have never seen a computer freeze up so fast. What really peaked my curiosity is that the same fork bomb has almost no effect on the performance of Mac OSX (10.6). I know that one can limit the availability of resources to specific users. Is that essentially what Snow Leopard is doing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Online Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 - Fail

May 1, 2011

I was a little worried about doing an upgrade, via Update Manager, from 10.10 to 11.04.

I was right to be worried.

Boot hangs and booting in verbose mode, grub does come up, but going into the main latest kernel version shows;

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown block.

Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions

0b00 1648575 sr0 driver sr

May have missed some of the text as wrote it down.

sda1 was my original and only partition.

Have used my 10.10 live cd and file structure and files are all there,

Took the opportunity to shrink the single main partion and create primary partitions for /home and another for all the junk I accumulate. sda1 will still be my boot partition.

In the process of making a 11.04 boot CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Online Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.04 Using The Update Manager

Apr 30, 2010

I'm trying to do an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 using the update manager. Since update manager did not indicate that there was and upgrade, I used the update-manager --devel-release command to initiate the process. The upgrade stops during while looking for channels with the following error message:

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I don't believe this to be a network problem because it fails in the same place every time. I don't see the entry for debian-installer in the Release file which I believe is why the error is occuring, however, I'm not sure what to do about it. It seems like something is pointed to the wrong place. I've maintained this system with update-manager for several years and never had a problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Tried To Do Online 10.04 Upgrade Now Hangs On Boot

May 15, 2010

I was really enjoying the speediness of 9.10 on my HP Pavilion ze4900. Once I got the wireless driver loaded correctly, anyway. Tried to do an on-line upgrade to 10.04, but figured I should have had a hard-wired internet connection when I got installation messages that "Could not set up..." the network. But, installation continued without any other apparent issues. As soon as it rebooted at the end, the problem started. It hangs right after the ubuntu logo, with a completely blank screen.

My questions:
1) Can I get this to start booting properly?
2) If not, what would be the best way to retrieve my evolution mail files, so I can do a clean install? If I boot from a CD, will I be able to retrieve those files and maybe put them on a memory stick?

Ubuntu Installation :: Online Update To 10.04 - Loss Of Windows Boot?

May 2, 2010

Machine: Win2000 Pro, AMD64 Athlon 2GHz, 2x80Gb HD, 2 GB RAM Symptoms: Running 9.10 with dual boot no probs for ~ 1 year. Decided to upgrade online via synaptic to 10.04. Upgrade went well no warnings, etc. On reboot all OS options present in Grub BUT clicking on Win2000 causes the screen to blank temporarily and then return to the Grub menu ie. no functioning Win2000 boot option. Ubuntu 10.04 boot yields blank screen with flashing cursor, a sudden stream of IO error messages (can't capture it but the lines look identical) then screen flickers and I'm at the purple log in screen and everything proceeds perfectly from there.

Observations: For the first time on any of my ubuntu installs (i've been using since 8.04 always installing from CD though) grub installation asked where I wanted it. In fact, the screen shows all devices with check boxes wth which to make my choice. That is sdb, sdb1, sdb2, ... , sda, sda1, sda2, There was a message that says that if in doubt install on _all_. Being in doubt I checked all the boxes: sdb, sdb1, etc. I noted in the message streams that followed after i continued that some lines had "... this is BAD ..." but since it was all rolling along very quickly no idea exactly _what_ was bad.

Action: I am not a linux newb but I am a grub newb. I fished the forums and googled only to come completely confused about what the problem might be or what to do. Example: have i overwritten my win bootloader? is my mbr corrupted? if i remove grub what will happen? if i remove and reinstall grub will i get windows booting back? if i use my win2000 install CD will it overwrite my whole disk (as many warn) or can i just fix the mbr? if I do the latter what order do i ie use fix mbr then fix boot? The info i've come across so far either doesn't address what happened to me, deals with other OSs (XP, Vista), or is applied to earlier editions of grub/ubuntu. Right now I have not found a clear step by step that addresses my circumstance. Would anyone be able to provide some guidance? I need the windows boot to run some software (Matlab) that btw will not work with XP/Vista (hence the reason i still have win2k).
