Actually im using fedora 13 64 bit.the guy who left the company has configured raid.but when i open the OS its showing the error called /dev/sda3 disk failure is imminent.so i have findout that is our root partition.so could any one telme if i replace the sda3 harddisk with new one.will my raid configuration will be there or i have to do it from beginning. what if one disk get failed so how can i up my running os. currently im using hda,hdb,hdc,hdd,hde,hdf.my hda3 is showing disk failure. i think he has configure raid5.
I applying changes through update manager in ubuntu 10.04 then my computer froze. So I had to restart it manually. Now I can't boot ubuntu normal or recovery mode.I get an error message saying 'the disk drive / is not ready yet or blah blah'.I don't have a livecd to fix it this with... but here is my 'cat /etc/fstab' relevant output
When I look for specific info about what is taking the space using du command I get that the space used by the root system is 7.2Gb. I get to the same conclusion when checking the space with Nautilus.
I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?
Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(
I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.

My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.
An old machine in our office, running Ubuntu 6.06 all of a sudden will not boot up. I get the following info during boot:

I am having problem with the root disk / fill up. So now that i have the disk information provided from SAN team Id 0:3, how would i do to add this device to / to increase space on Redhat Enterprise server 4?
I have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.
I'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.
i had installed fedora 14 into my new hardisk(1500gb) as new server the problem is how can i use the fdisk to partition the hardisk into two partition.

Where did the partition table go? The device had one ext3 partition something around 4GB(size of USB storage device). I need to restore few files from this device.
I have finally been convinced to partition my 500GB hard drive from a two partition setup with root and swap to a three partition setup with root, swap, and home. I found a nice tutorial about how to do this, but here is my question:
A) How much space do I leave for the root partition and the home partition?
when I tried to install Fedora on my pc, I got this error message " Defined Root partition not created a / boot/efi partition. I am trying to install it on a seperate hd. My main one has windows xp pro, but I do not want to interfer with that at all?.
I initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.
I am relatively new to Linux and Opensuse. I created the / root partition and now it is growing and maxing out. I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?
What I believe has happened is that I've corrupted the partition table. Essentially one of my partitions' ending point exceeds the maximum number of cylinders/sectors on my drive.
Essentially I have the same problem as on the thread @ [url] but do not know how to fix this and am afraid to reformat/partition based on sectors without really knowing what I'm doing here.

When I try to look at SDA in GParted everything shows up as unallocated (though it's obviously not) and it says
A part of my hd is ntfs (where I keep my windows and windows files). I edited it to be flagged as "bootable" in the disk tools that comes with ubuntu 10.10, and now it wont list as a file system in ubuntu (in other words I cant access it).
I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
I have a dual booting newly installed 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my machine. It was all fine until today. Now when I boot into Ubuntu, I see the error Failed to mount root filesystem. I cant remember any significant changes during the last session. One thing I remember is I upgraded the system using the update manager which asked me to choose an option for grub boot loader. I opted for its upgradation. After the upgrade, I was able to work with Ubuntu for a few more sessions. Windows XP works very fine.I checked other threads which suggested running fsck, but it did not help. fsck does not report any errors.
I installed ubuntu 10.04 from the CD (downloaded from ubuntu website), all worked very well. until today that I decided to run the software updater. It installed all the updates correctly, I restarted ok, but i experienced a mini locks, for example when i was with firefox, firefox had mini hangs for about 15 seconds then run normally. Then all OS got unstable, windows showing no thing, for example when i tried to restart using the button, it didnot do anything. Well i reset my computer and BOOM!, im stuck after Grub showing me this:

I'm able to reproduce this. I installed a fresh 10.4 again, then installed propietary drivers (nvidia), restart, all working flawless here, then updating all packages using the update-manager, restart, here not all working well (same sympthoms) so i decided to restart, then BOOM AGAIN.. I did the process 3 times and, the same, so I think something is BROKEN. So im able to reproduce it but don't know what the hell is causing it.
In Redhat 4.x, we can use 'smbmount' to mount another linux samba server with 'user1'. But now we used redhat 5.3(64bit), there is no smbmount and I can only user mount command via root.
How can I mount a folder via 'user1', not root?
(BTW, I can run '#mount hostname:/sharename /mnt/u1, but the access right of /mnt/u1 is only for root.)

I was trying to resize an external ntfs hard drive, so that I could make room at the front of the disk for a swap partition. At the end of the process gparted encountered an error. It couldn't see my disk again until I rebooted the system. Now, when it looks at the hard drive, it sees it as one big unpartitioned hard drive.
I'm pretty sure all the data is still there, uncorrupted. I just can't access it. How can I fix this?
I am running out of disk space, so I decided to resize Windows 7 on my first hard drive, so I could add another ext4 partition to put data on. However, gparted threw an error during the resize, and left with me a un-bootable Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 gets up to about where the login screen appears, but then BSODs and reboots. Unfortunately, the bsod is so fast, that I cannot see any details. Windows 7 recovery mode cannot fix the issue. When I try to repair the disk in gparted I get this error:
ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!
Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitioning? I have attached my gparted_details log files, in a zipped folder.
I was testing out a new cron job (very simple rsync), and for whatever reason when executed at midnight, the files were not written to the correct drive (executing the script manually does this).
'watching' df -k, I could see '/' fill up extremely quickly. I now have about 10GB~ free space on the 74GB raptor - down from 60GB. I've gone through trying to find the offending files, however I can't seem to find them anywhere. Any variety of 'du' that I know of isn't turning up anything.
When I try 'makebootdisk' and get to the 'format' stage, it tells me: "The attempt to format the floppy disk in /dev/fd0 has failed ..." The disk is fine, and can be read from, but the above msg. shows up instantly -- the light on the drive doesn't even come on. I'd expect this to be a routine problem but I can't find any solutions either here or on the web.
