Ubuntu :: Bootable USB Drive Deleted OS On Hard Drive And Replaced It?

Aug 26, 2010

I just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Some Files From External USB Hard Drive Onto Laptop And Laptop Froze Up?

Mar 2, 2010

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing. Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch. At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder. For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens. The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

It would be perfect to have a folder which content would appear on the "virtual" usb drive when connected to something.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 X64 To A Laptop Harddrive Using A USB Drive?

Aug 15, 2010

I cannot find this usb-creator. I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 x64 to a laptop harddrive using a USB drive. I think this is what I need but I am not sure. I tried mounting an ISO of Ubuntu, but did not find usb-creator. I tried some "sudo apt-get install usb-creator" command (cannot remember exact syntax, but the install succeeded) but I cannot find the installed application. If this is indeed the utility that I need, where do I find it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Second Hard Drive In Laptop?

Dec 13, 2010

Installing Linux on second hard drive in laptop I hope to get a laptop with two hard drives. I like to know if UBUNTU comes with installer that would easily let me install UBUNTU on the second hard drive. And also let me select which OS to boot on startup. Win 7-64-bits will be on the first hard drive, Linux will be on 2nd / other hard drive. I prefer NOT to use Wubi to install linux in Win 7's primary partition because should I reinstall Win7 with recovery disks, it will wipe out Linux.

Hardware :: Can't Move Drive To Identical Laptop

Oct 7, 2010

I have two identical laptops. One has an installed Ubuntu and parts that I want to use. The box itself is all beat up. The other box is newer but has a stale edition of linux. (Stale software means "seldom used.") I thought to be clever I would pull drive-A from box-A and install it into box-B. Likewise, I would install drive-B into box-A. This will leave my clunky software on my battered box and my newer software on the newer box.

Mechanically it works (doh!). However, neither box will see the network. When I look at the logs, I find a "rename wlan0 to wlan1" entry among others. If I put the drives back into their original box, all works correctly.

What could be going on that I cannot move the drives and have things just boot and run?

I thought that system start would detect the installed hardware, load the required drivers and all is right with the world. The "rename" log entry suggests that the old hardware details are somehow in the way of the new hardware discovery and configuration.

Is there some command I need to use or utility that I ought to run that says, "rediscover my hardware" or similar?

I already know how to use clonezilla and other ways to duplicate a drive contents to a second drive. (Note to reader: laptop drive to usb drive clonezilla takes quite some amount of time.)

Another reason that this is important lies in the ability to move a drive from in-use but failed hardware to stand-by working hardware in a fail soft recovery situation. I know that win-doze knows about the installed hardware and demands a re-install or "repair" to the alternate box... but this is linux not win-doze.

Fedora Installation :: New Hard Drive In Laptop - How To Setup

Apr 7, 2009

I am upgrading my old 40G hard drive to a new 160G one and want to know the best way to set it for use with my system. I currently have a Windows partition which I want to keep & reinstate onto the new drive. Then I want to have another 3 partitions for different distros.

What should I do as a first step when I put the drive in boot off a live CD. I am assuming that I will need to do. If I do a, # grub-install, will this then format the MBR and then create a small partition for /boot. Following that, do I just restore the Windows partition immediately after the /boot partition, and then create new partitions for the distros accordingly.

I would also like to create a seperate swap partition and then install F10. Is there an option in Anaconda to not use LVM (can't remember).

Fedora Networking :: Can't Mount The Shared Drive On Laptop

Feb 19, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 12 + KDE on my laptop. I also have a media PC which I have connected to my TV. It has an external HD connected to which I am trying to mount on my laptop. It is connected to two other PCs all running Windows 7, part of a workgroup that only requires a password with no user log in. These PCs are working OK but I cant mount the shared drive on my Fedora laptop. I have tried the "Add Network Place" wizard which didnt work. Tried using the host IP rather than the host name. This got me to a user authentication screen which prompted me for a username and password.

As I mentioned before, the only user authentication required to connect to it should be that the device should be within the same workgroup and use the password. Tried using the workgroup name as the username which didnt work, neither did using the PCs usual log in. Eventually I gave up on the wizard and attempted to mount it from the command line using the following command.

OpenSUSE Install :: Swap Hard-drive From Old Laptop Into The New One?

Dec 30, 2009

I got a new laptop, a Dell D400. I want to swap my hard-drive from my old laptop into the new one, and did so... but then got an error stating that my CPU didn't support PAE.

As far as I was aware I hadn't actually installed a kernel with PAE enabled [as I always pick a real-time kernel for audio work]: but then read that lots of the newer distibutions are enabling PAE by default [which is what's caused the problem].

Is there an easy way of disabling PAE in the existing kernel? Or would it be easier to downgrade to another version of OpenSUSE? I'm on 11.2.

Ubuntu Installation :: P3 Laptop - No Cd Drive And No Operating System

Feb 22, 2010

I am trying to install a linux distrobution on a laptop that can only boot off a cd or harddrive (or network? not sure), except that it has no cd drive and no operating system. That's right, no floppy no USB no CD. I read on the internet a chap installed Ubuntu with these conditions by taking out the harddrive and installing an old copy of Ubuntu on it on another computer with a disc drive, and then putting it back in his laptop and upgrading.

Now I have installed DOS 7.10 before on this laptop hard-drive and it worked, but it wasn't very useful, being a text based system. I have tried installing Windows XP (only because I am familiar with it) but my installation CD is OEM, and doesn't seem to like it. So I put the ubuntu 4.10 cd in my desktop with the CD drive after clearing all data off the laptop hard-drive (DOS 7.10). Then the cd boots and I am given the menu to install ubuntu. So I press Enter, it starts installing and then freezes at the language selection screen. So what is my problem? I have pressed lots of keys in order to get some response, but nothing. I waited 10min for something to happen, but nothing did.

General :: Wipe The Hard Drive On An Ancient Laptop?

Nov 28, 2010

I am trying to wipe the hard drive on an ancient laptop. The current plan is to find a live distro that can run shred or equivalent program. The problem is that most ultralight linux's don't seem to work with the RAM restrictions (Optimistically 80 MB, Worst Case 16 or less). I will likely have to just bust open the case and physically mutilate the Drive I would prefer a more 'civilized' approach (defined as one which keeps the machine in one functioning piece).

Model: Dell Latitude XPi CD
Processor: Intel (Inside) Pentium (one?) MMX
Available Media: CD, Possibly Floppy (I have access to only one other machine with a drive)
OS: Windows 95

I am having a hard time getting any farther specs. If anyone knows of a distro that has a prayer of running in these conditions I would love to know.

Current candidates:
Puppy Linux < 1.0.2
DSL (Unsure of architecture compatibility)

Debian Configuration :: Laptop DVD Drive Is Acting Odd (blank) After Update

Aug 20, 2010

After the mass amount of updates that appeared for Debian, my DVD drive seems to detect a burned DVD I have as blank now. And when i put in the disc, there's two copies of the DVD drive on Computer, both of which are labeled CD/DVD Drive: Blank DVD-ROM Disc. I have gone in to disc manager and found that it is possible to mount the volume on the disc, and on the second icon it will appear and work. However, this is annoying having two icons.

Now, when I don't have a disc in there, it only shows one drive. My PC may have messed up during the updates, because I just let it update in the background while my sister was using it to show my mom's friends pictures and she randomly closed out of one of the windows without asking me anything (ffff), so that may have messed something up. Does anyone know how I would go about fixing this?

General :: Windows - Cdrom Drive Doesn't Work On Laptop?

Dec 21, 2010

I bought a new CDROM drive, as recommended by HP. It still doesn't work. I can open and close it now; so that's changed. But it still doesn't appear as a drive, and I can't use it.

Here's as best as I can describe it:

When starting up, the boot order doesn't recognize the cdrom drive, but I can open and close the drive during this time.

In Windows 7, I can't open the cdrom drive, and it doesn't recognize it in device manager, disk management, or my computer.

In Ubuntu Linux, I can open the cdrom drive, but it still doesn't recognize the cds, and it won't mount.

If I reformat everything, would my cdrom drive work again? Can I reinstall Windows without a cdrom drive? I've deleted the upper and lower filters as was suggested in Google searches. Took the disk drive out and checked that it was installed correctly (no reason it shouldn't have been). Still: nothing works.

Slackware :: Installing 13.37 On Old Laptop - Fdisk Does Not Recognize The Hard Drive

Jul 19, 2011

Long time Slack user, thought I would try to update my old laptop (Toshiba Satellite with AMD K6-2 333 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive) from 10.2 to 13.37 in celebration of the newest version :-)

By update, I mean a complete wipe and reinstall, just to be clear.

So 10.2 runs well, everything looks shiny (XFCE of course) but when I try to install 13.37 I run into trouble. I figured out to boot with huge.s instead of hugesmp.s, but when I try to run 'setup' I get an error that says I have no partitions. mkay, I try fdisk (or cfdisk), but I get literally NO response - no error, no nothing but a return to the command promt. It is exactly as if fdisk does not recognize there is a hard drive there at all.

I boot back into 10.2,check the BIOS, everything looks fine, I have a drive mounted at /dev/hda1, swap at /dev/hda3. Are there some additional parameters I should be booting with? Does it matter that the hard drive is ATA?

The setup is as follows 40GB SSD (this drive was replaced) 2X 500GB SATA These drives are encrypted and used raid and LVM But im really unsure how to get to the data/set it back up like it was before. Now before the hard drive was replaced I was smart enough to create a image of the drive with dd. Debian Hardware :: Laptop Hard Drive Spindown Time Is Too Short?

Apr 13, 2010

This isn't a problem with the 2.6.26 kernel that I have been using, but it is with newer ones. I want to upgrade to a backports kernel, because there has been a REALLY long standing 2.6.26 bug with cpu frequency governors and suspending that is never going to get fixed.

Basically, with the 2.6.30 backports kernel, the hard drive spindown time is way too short. I'd like it to spin down after a minute or two of inactivity, but it is spinning down after only 5-10 seconds. Is there any way to fix this? edit: Now that I think about it, this is also a problem on another laptop that runs squeeze.
