Fedora Networking :: Can't Mount The Shared Drive On Laptop

I recently installed Fedora 12 + KDE on my laptop. I also have a media PC which I have connected to my TV. It has an external HD connected to which I am trying to mount on my laptop. It is connected to two other PCs all running Windows 7, part of a workgroup that only requires a password with no user log in. These PCs are working OK but I cant mount the shared drive on my Fedora laptop. I have tried the "Add Network Place" wizard which didnt work. Tried using the host IP rather than the host name. This got me to a user authentication screen which prompted me for a username and password.
As I mentioned before, the only user authentication required to connect to it should be that the device should be within the same workgroup and use the password. Tried using the workgroup name as the username which didnt work, neither did using the PCs usual log in. Eventually I gave up on the wizard and attempted to mount it from the command line using the following command.

It's been awhile since I posted anything which is a good sign my install has been working well and I have been able to handle most everything. However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.

I'm running CentOS 5.3 fully upgraded on a test server. I'd like to create a virtual machine, and host the VM files in a shared folder located in another windows server.
I can access this folder usign the graphic browser, but I'm inable to mount it in a local folder.

I've recently set up a fedora 13 machine to use as a media server, I've been able to get everything going except samba. I've installed a second hard drive which is mounted at /media/Core and works fine on the local filesystem. I can browse the share from my mac however when I connect I get this in the smb.log file

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

That folders I cannot access are Music and Videos.

I mounted a shared windows folder from my LAN, and I changed the mount point's ownership on Linux using command line `chown me:me windir`. but when I enter the mount point, and to create files, it mentioned me 'Permission denied', but the file is actually created on the windows' folder, and its ownership is root:root.
this problem puzzled my programs going to run on it. cause them will detect a system returned error, and terminate in a abnormal way.

I have two computers running Ubuntu 9.10, both have one shared folder. These were set up via Nautilus.
On computer 1 I can see and use the shared folder of computer 2 just fine.
On computer 2 I can NOT see the shared folder of computer 1 anymore since recently. I has worked in the past.
Some more information: the name of computer 1 is "daniel", the share name is "gedeeld". So the address of the shared folder of computer 1 would be smb://daniel/gedeeld/
Opening this address in Nautilus works fine on computer 1 (that shares the folder), but results in an error on computer 2.
Error: failed to mount Windows share. Please select another viewer and try again.

I have an external HD attached to my desktop and setup as a shared resource. I want to be able to access it from my laptop as well. After much trying and drinking, I ended up with this in fstab:
//crackbox/seagate /seagate -o
then began giving me an error about not recognizing the file system type. I've been reading everything I can find and trying to get it to work, and have come up with very little. My fstab now contains this line instead of the above:

I was trying to figure out how to get my network drive to mount as a local drive on my computer. This was back on 9.10. Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.
Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?

Its annoying to unmount my flash drive twice.. its not a major problem actually but its kinda annoying , its whenever i plug-in my flash drive.. everything works well except when i need to un-mount it.. I usually unmount it twice using right-click of the mouse, then it mounts itself back, so i have to unmount it again.. Is there any way to control this? How do i setup the auto-mount option for USB flash drives?

I have a machine running Ubuntu 9.10 that has an external HD with shared folders music folder and media downloads folder). I have set up SAMBA on that machine.
On my laptop I am running a dual boot system with Windows Vista and using wubi install, Ubuntu 9.10.
In Windows, I am able to wirelessly connect to the shared folder and access the music folder and the media downloads folder on my Desktop Ubuntu machine. All is good.
When I boot in Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the shared folder under Places > Network I can negotiate to the MSHOME (the name of my work group). Once selected I get the error Failed to retrieve Shared List from server error message.

I successfully installed Samba, but have problem with access to any shared folder on my secondary drive. If I try access secondary drive with admin user, everything is fine. If with another account try to access via samba to shared folder on partition with Ubuntu, everything is fine again. Every folder has set privileges to read&write to everyone, so shouldn't be problem here.

Initially when I shrunk my NTFS Windows partition to install Fedora 11 I underestimated how much space I'd need for Fedora. Now that I'm using it as my primary operating system I have wasted space in the form of spare space on my NTFS partition. I was just wandering how safe it is to shrink this partition and move the free space to my /home partition using gparted on Linux? This would probably involve having to shift things towards the beginning of the drive as the Windows partition is at the beginning and the /home directory is at the end. Would I need to use a LiveCD to do this since it's meddling with an active operating system? I know I should back up the data, but is it quite safe to do it despite gparted in all likelihood having to move data from block to block across the drive?

i ve been a thorough user of ubuntu and one reason for me using windows is that office uses a windows based software. i ve been lucky to install the same on my laptop and executing it using wine. the hitch is that whatever i work on the laptop doesnt get updated in the server. is there a mapping needed or some extra configuration ? the documents i post on my laptop is visible within the software but its not shown up on server database.

I am having a small issue on my machine. I have a NAS drive serving up media files. I have a line in my /etc/fstab such that, when the mythbuntu machine boots it is supposed to mount the network drive. This configuration worked fine for mythbuntu 9.10. I recently updated the machine up to 10.10 and since then the network drive won't mount at boot. If I open a terminal and issue: sudo mount -a, it will mount the network drive just fine.

I recently bought a Freecom 500GB network drive for backup and sharing files on my home network.I can access it via wireless on my Vista laptop and read/write to it with Dolphin and Krusader in Mandriva. I can also use the sync function in Krusader but it is so slooooow! Therefore I want to use Grsync but for that the drive needs to be mounted, that is where the problem lies!

would anyone advise on how to properly mount a samba share using a script which i'd run whenever i wanted to map it? I was trying to write one but with no joy...I tried having read many pages about mount / smbmount / mount.cisf / fstab etc. but I didn't achieve what I need and now I'm totally cofused... My goal is to have a script file, like a .bat, which i would use as myself to map a share to a directory. I would like to be able to mount it as non-root and umount as non-root as well. The level of access should be rw so i could copy and delete files.

I have this ubuntu machine that lives under my desk and is basically a utility machine. Mainly I ssh to it and get synchronize/backup files, etc.
When I reboot, for some reason the auto mount for my usb drives doesn't work until I actually hook up the monitor and log in to the gui. When I ssh in after reboot, I'm unable to access my USB drives! "Not Authorized"
I'm not sure how to mount a drive from the command line... really I just want the machine to auto mount the drives when it starts up... gui login or no.

My laptop is connected to my network through wifi. One of my desktops is always running as a file server for the rest of the network. Currently, to access that file server, I have to manually mount the network drive each time I boot the laptop. I have tried adding a line to fstab to have the drive mounted when the system first boots up, but since the wireless connection isn't active yet, the system hangs with an error message saying that the drive was not able to mount correctly and I have to press a key to continue.
is there any way to have the system automatically mount the network drive AFTER the network connection has become available AND, if for some reason the drive is not able to mount (i.e. I'm on the road and the laptop logs into a different network), it simply bypasses that and continues booting without displaying an error?

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens.The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

I got NFS installed all fine and dandy.
I want to make it now so that my drive will mount either at startup or a Keyboard shortcut.
Problem I run into is I need to logged in as root or have sudo access.
I got a feeling that it won't be that hard, maybe.
Pretty much I wanna run

Without putting in a password.

I am upgrading my old 40G hard drive to a new 160G one and want to know the best way to set it for use with my system. I currently have a Windows partition which I want to keep & reinstate onto the new drive. Then I want to have another 3 partitions for different distros.
What should I do as a first step when I put the drive in boot off a live CD. I am assuming that I will need to do. If I do a, # grub-install, will this then format the MBR and then create a small partition for /boot. Following that, do I just restore the Windows partition immediately after the /boot partition, and then create new partitions for the distros accordingly.
I would also like to create a seperate swap partition and then install F10. Is there an option in Anaconda to not use LVM (can't remember).

Purchased Toshiba Satellite laptop L505D-S5983 November 30, 2009. Separated partitions and inserted Fedora 11 disk. Computer responded and asked question regarding what I wanted to do and I selected install.
