Ubuntu :: Cannot Locate A Copy To Repair The MBR On Laptop

Jan 29, 2010

I have an Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop operating Windows XP SP3 on a 40 GB hard drive and an 250GB USB Seagate External Expansion Portable Drive, partitioned into two equal sections. I downloaded and burned Ubuntu 9.10 to a CD. I booted up from the CD and installed Ubuntu on one part of the Expansion Drive. When it was completed, I shut down my laptop, unplugged the Expansion Drive and ate dinner.

Later on and came back and turned on my laptop. When I turned it on, I received this message:

GRUB loading,
error: no such disk
grub rescue>

With my external hard drive plugged in, I am able to see the full GRUB menu listing the Ubuntu install as well on the external hard drive, and the windows XP install on my internal hard drive.

Without my external drive plugged it, my laptop fails to XP. It goes straight to:

GRUB loading,
error: no such disk
grub rescue>

The part I don't understand is why it i looking for GRUB on my internal hard drive when I installed Ubuntu on an external hard drive.

Windows XP is only installed on the 40 GB hard drive, which is the internal drive. The 250GB USB Seagate External Expansion Portable Drive, partitioned into two equal sections, has Ubuntu install on one of the partitions. The other partition is blank.

When I connected the expansion drive to my laptop, GRUB starts up and I can choose from using Ubuntu or Windows. The laptop was given to me as a hand-me-down, so I do not have a copy of Windows XP, nor can I locate a copy to repair the MBR on my laptop. Is there a way I can fix what has happened so I can normally boot Windows without needing to plug in my expansion drive?

Here is some additional information that I hope helps. This is what my GRUB menu looks like when the external HD is connected:

Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14 generic
Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14 generic (recovery mode)
Memory Test (memtest86+)
Memory Test (memtest86+) serial console 115200
Dell Utility Partition (on /dev /sda1)

Ubuntu :: Error - Cannot Locate Drive By-dev-id HD_BLAH

Feb 4, 2010

I logged on today to find my computer with a blank black screen when I walked back into the room. It appears that Ubuntu suddenly cannot find my HD anymore. I get through the grub screen and even past the little white Ubuntu 9.10 logo, but then no login box appears and when I press a key I get the terminal, where is says something to the effect of:

Error can not locate drive by-dev-id HD_BLAH ,

my Ubuntu partitioned drive of course. Is there any way to check that that drive is even still functioning. I pretty much have permanently switched over to Ubuntu, so it would suck to lose that drive.I really need some advice on what to do...should I just attempt to boot the live CD? (by attempt I mean my computer is so damn old that the CD and DVD drives are pretty much dead, and I'd be lucky to read a CD correctly because of this).

Ubuntu :: Transferring Some Files From External USB Hard Drive Onto Laptop And Laptop Froze Up?

Mar 2, 2010

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing. Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch. At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder. For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens. The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

Fedora Installation :: New Hard Drive In Laptop - How To Setup

Apr 7, 2009

I am upgrading my old 40G hard drive to a new 160G one and want to know the best way to set it for use with my system. I currently have a Windows partition which I want to keep & reinstate onto the new drive. Then I want to have another 3 partitions for different distros.

What should I do as a first step when I put the drive in boot off a live CD. I am assuming that I will need to do. If I do a, # grub-install, will this then format the MBR and then create a small partition for /boot. Following that, do I just restore the Windows partition immediately after the /boot partition, and then create new partitions for the distros accordingly.

I would also like to create a seperate swap partition and then install F10. Is there an option in Anaconda to not use LVM (can't remember).

Fedora Networking :: Can't Mount The Shared Drive On Laptop

Feb 19, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 12 + KDE on my laptop. I also have a media PC which I have connected to my TV. It has an external HD connected to which I am trying to mount on my laptop. It is connected to two other PCs all running Windows 7, part of a workgroup that only requires a password with no user log in. These PCs are working OK but I cant mount the shared drive on my Fedora laptop. I have tried the "Add Network Place" wizard which didnt work. Tried using the host IP rather than the host name. This got me to a user authentication screen which prompted me for a username and password.

As I mentioned before, the only user authentication required to connect to it should be that the device should be within the same workgroup and use the password. Tried using the workgroup name as the username which didnt work, neither did using the PCs usual log in. Eventually I gave up on the wizard and attempted to mount it from the command line using the following command.

Ubuntu :: Best Way To Locate A File Or Folder In Hard Drive?

May 17, 2011

What is the best way to locate a file or folder in your hard drive? I have been trying to do that through searching in "Files & Folders" but it seems that the search is not thorough: it doesn't look for everything. I have an external drive that when it's connected to the computer I would like to search inside of it as well. The "Files & Folders" option does not seem to do that at all.

General :: Locate Command To Include The External Hard Drive

Feb 10, 2010

I normally use the "locate" command to find files that I have on my local drive. However, if I wanted to do this for an external drive, how would I go about this?

From what little I know about Linux, I'm guessing that it creates a reference file from which it performs the search when the command is typed. If I'm right this is updated at a given interval or when "updatedb" is used?

As the external hard drive is not always mounted is it best to create another of these reference files and have a different command (e.g. locateext) or something? Or is it best to add the external hard drive's location to the list of files that get added with updatedb.

I'm running Fedora 11.

General :: Mounting To Dreambox - Cant Locate The External Drive Anymore

Dec 21, 2010

Have a QNAP TS219P+ with two Samsung disks and a WD as extern disk on my Nas. I also have a Dreambox 800 Satellite receiver. Both Linux. I mounted the satellite receiver to my NAS and also a mount to the extern drive. This all works well, until.

I programmed the NAS to go down at midnight and to startup again in the morning. All the mounts are back and working, except the mount from my dreambox to the extern drive. It seems that the dreambox cant locate the extern drive anymore, while the NAS recognice the extern drive well. I first must shut down the whole system, reconnect the extern drive, startup again the NAS, startup again the dreambox reconnect the extern drive and with some luck all is up and working again.

The mounting is done via NFS and this is my line:

Has someone an idea what this mounting problem is?

Fedora Installation :: Download A Installation DVD Of F10 For My New ThinkPad T500 Laptop?

Apr 2, 2009

when I tried to download a installation DVD of F10 for my new thinkPad T500 laptop. The architecture of the processor should be i686 and I downloaded the DVD image Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso. I understand i686 has backward compatability with i386. But i have following questoins:

(1) why we don't have an installation for i686?

(2) If I install the i386 package, do I get performance downgrades?

(3) Also, why the live DVD has this file called F10-i686-Live.iso?

(4) Finally, I always get message like "Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
/usr/bin/xterm: cannot load font -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1" when I use X application. What's the problem here? BTW, I used Fedora core 8 before I didnt have this problem.

No matter what client I use, nothing ever downloads. For example, right now Transmission says "Downloading from 0 of 0 connected peers - Idle" while WinXP in a virtual machine is downloading at 500 kb/s.

Like I said, it's only one this laptop, with all clients, and it works on a VM.
