Hardware :: Firewire (1394) External HDD Was Recognized As /dev/sda1
May 25, 2010
I have a Maxtor external storage HDD with firewire (1394) interface.
When I connected it with my computer, which is running an up-to-date Debian squeeze, it was recognized as "/dev/sda1" and replaced the existing partition on the computer.

I am relatively new to CentOS. I attempted to install 5.3 with firewire several weeks ago and abandoned the install because it was taking too long to figure out the problems. I've had to revisit this and am having troubles with it. I was told that CentOS 5 has firewire 1394 support. When I did the typical install, it didn't physically (manually) install the video1394 and raw1394 modules. At boot up, my computer says that video1394 and raw1394 are "Module(s) not found". If I do <lsmod> I get (*snippet of o/p),

I have found several other posts on the web that indicate I have to get the latest source files, but I do not know which one is the correct one or where to find it. Can anyone ponit me in the right direction? Is there anything else that I need to do?

I want to enable Firewire for my audio interface. I'm using ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit version).
lspci returns that I have a Texas instruments chipset. But when I search the kernal log file with grep, there are no references to this. I've searched for 1394, found nothing. I've read the whole thing and found references to Firewire_core, but looking online, this appears to be something else? I may be wrong, but my device is not recognised anywhere, as far as I can tell.
I have checked in Synaptic that I have the 1394 libraries installed, I do. And checked their dependencies are present.
I know that the device and the mobo are fine, as windows identifies the device with no trouble.
Can anyone tell me, what universe and multiverse means in relation to Synaptic packages, and how to enable these settings?
Also, should I expect my Firewire device to appear in the Places menu when it is recognised? It hasn't as yet, and I don't seem to be able to select for use as an audio interface in Ardour, the linux studio-recording program.
Maybe I've missed it completely, but I think the key problem is thers no reference to 1394 in my Kernel log.
lspci returns

With CentOS-5.5, centos plus enabled, my LaCie external hard drives are not recognized even though connected and powered up before booting. I am logging in as root. Previous 2.4 kernel RHEL Enterprise 3 required a special scanning script which worked with this computer. This current system will not recognize the drives as hardware. On the other hand the drives with USB 2.0 ports automount connected with USB and also are recognized in the hardware list. what diagnostics to do to find out what layers / drivers are missing.

has anyone successfully mounted and external HFS firewire HDD from command line? I installed all the HFS tools but I haven't been able to mount it. It is not even recognized by fdisk. GNOME seems to mount it without an issue but in my case it is a server and I don't want to have GNOME eating up my scarce resources.

I bough a 640 GB external USB disk.I found something wasn't working well when I couldn't restore a backup from the disk (with sbackup). So I tried to convert the filesystem from fat32 to something newer.I installed gparted, and it shows no partitions on the 640 drive (however, I can access the filesystem!!!). Also, for some reason it shows as a 298.08 GiB drive. So I thought I should format it to solve this. When I tried to do this, gparted simply closed, with no error messages.

Jaunty is fully updated but SUDDENLY is not recognizing external devices (card reader, camera, DVD inserted in drawer, etc.) In other words, I cannot see my media and, therefore, cannot open it.
Anybody else having problems here? What's up? Did something go wrong in the updates?
(AMD64 running stable Jaunty 9.10 fully updated)

I have gone through Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, and continue using them on different PCs but I recently had a problem with my graphics card on new releases.. another story all together. So I am using OpenSUSE 11.3 on my Dell inspiron 1526 AMD 64 bit. I have always been able to plug in my external HD and have it show on my desktop. Now with OpenSUSE something is different. I tried other flash drives, all show up and open to view on their own, but my 1GB ext HD doesn't. I am not a pro with the Terminal yet but I prefer to use it and am good at reading and copying commands from online.

Recently (in 2015) our Debian systems started not to recognize HDDs connected via an external docking station.
On my computer I run: (uname -a)
* Linux violin 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-3~deb8u1 (2015-04-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux
* If I connect to a flashdrive to the USB2 port, it is recognized as sd* (messages are also written to dmesg/syslog)
* If I connect the USB3 connector of the external docking station with an 1TB WD SATA docked, to this USB2 port (the external docking station has its own power supply, so I do not expect to have a problem with the current, the drive spins up and is spinning), there is nothing in the dmesg/syslog, and no new items under /dev/sd* or lsusb or similar tools.
* If I connect the same external docking station with the same disk via eSATA on a different computer it is recognized. That computer runs the same debian. If I connect through its USB2 port it does not work either.
* I also tried another docking station and USB cable.

I am actually working again on a problem i had already on opensus 11.3 (never resolved), and now also after the upgrade to 11.4 .
I do have an external HDD (Samsung STORY Station) usually connected to the linux server. I also have udev rules setup to automount the device on /media/xxx by label.
I used to have my own rules, now have some more coplete from the internet.
When I now reboot the server, the "sd*" device for story station is not created, and obviously not mounted.
If however I do switch of th estory station after reboot, and turn power on again, the device is configured and properly automounted as by udev rules.
Also during the boot the device is seen as from boot.msg:
Code:
<6>[ 1.444939] usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=5f06
<6>[ 1.448686] usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=11, SerialNum
ber=3
<6>[ 1.452462] usb 2-2: Product: Samsung STORY Station
<6>[ 1.456217] usb 2-2: Manufacturer: JMicron
P.S.: I used th esearch function and google, but did find many similar articles but nothing matching my scenario. So I hope I did not miss something obvious.

OpenSUSE 11.2 server, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P sda for system, 3 ext4 partitions, working fine.sdb promise RAID1 for data, 1 ext4 partition, working fine.sdc is an eSATA docking station for data backup, 1 encrypted ext4 partition -- here lies the problem.
This configuration has been functional for months until I decided to add two more external drives (sdc) to rotate through backups. I had difficulty with encyption on the first new drive and eventually decided to start over. Using the gui Yast Expert Partitioner, I deleted the single partition. That began a real nightmare...
Since deleting the partition, the system detects drives inserted in the docking station, but does not report them (including a different fully functional drive and a brand new unused drive). I have tested all drives on other computers and they function perfectly. I have rebooted the system several times while troubleshooting this issue.
Could not recreate the partition on server (since it does not recognize the drive), so I used Gparted on another computer - it all went without a hitch, formatted ext4. But when I placed the drive in the dock, the drive still was detected but not recognized.
Details:
BIOS lists the eSATA drive
Entering Yast Expert Partitioner, error message follows:
The partitioning on disk /dev/sdc is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sdc as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool.
Yast partitioner shows drives: sda, sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, sdb1 sbc is not listed.
# fdisk sdc results in: Unable to open sdc
# dmesg | grep tail reports:
[48442.370779] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdc] Unhandled error code
[48442.370793] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdc] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
code....
So how did partition deletion cause this issue, and how do I correct the problem? It is possible that my difficulties encrypting the first new drive are related (it's not my first time doing it successfully). It seems the problem is in the Kernel or configuration. I have invested many hours in forums and on google - tried dozens of possible fixes. I'm beginning to suspect system corruption or a bug, however all other system functions are working perfectly.

I have a Pinnacle IEEE 1394 card which according to Yast/Hardware Information seems to be installed and recognised correctly.
Trying to use Kino to download from a Camcorder via IEEE 1394 nothing happens and looking at Kino Preferences IEEE 1394 tab it tells me:
"The IEEE Subsystem is not responding. The raw 1394 module must be loaded, and you must have read and write access to /dev/raw1394."
I do not have an entry /dev/raw1394 on my system. Files libraw1394 and libraw1394-8 were installed by default(SUSE 11.3 64bit), and I have since installed any others offered which were libraw1394-8-32bit, libraw1394-devel, libraw1394-devel-32bit but to no avail.

I recently added an external hard drive through a IEEE 1394 interface. I'm finding that during large file transfers the system slows to a crawl. It's still running: routing for example seems fine. But running applications are pretty much unusable: Apache is unusably slow, SSH login is very slow, etc. Currently I'm using the IEEE 1394 drivers from Axel's ATRpms but I'm pretty sure I saw this with the default kernel IEEE 1394 drivers too.

I would like to install Fedora 11 on an ASUS P5L-VM 1394 motherboard with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. This is an LGA775 socket mobo with a Intel 945G chipset. Two SATA hard drives are plugged into SATA ports. An IDE DVD drive is plugged into the IDE/ATA port. Using the 32 bit Fedora 11 installation disk, I have seen two cases:
1) No hard drive recognized. When i get to the disk configuration screen, there are no options to choose from.
2) By monkeying around with the BIOS settings or switching the SATA ports the disks are connected to, I can get an alternative mode in which no drivers are found for the DVD drive either.
Currently, a version of Ubuntu is installed. UPDATE: The board was purchased in a P3-PH4C barebones, which for unknown reasons requires a different BIOS issue than the regular P5L-VM 1394. Updating to the most recent BIOS does not resolve the problem. One the installation procedure fails to recognize the hard drives, going into a shell and examining the boot up log shows that the kernel recognized both hard drives. So it's down to why the installation procedure is not recognizing them.

If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.

I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.
Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.
Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?

I have several laptops that all have firewire ports. Here is what I want to do. connect two laptops together using firewire across the table don't care about any existing network connection either laptop might have in progress use firewire for an interconnecting ad-hoc, static network link establish file and folder sharing between the two laptops (NFS makes a lot of sense but there are other options) Here is a likely scenario.
Two folks meet at some hotspot with a lot of data to share and exchange. Each is likely already on the net through the hotspot. Connecting firewire point-to-point gets an ad-hoc net and subnet that is independent of whatever might be happening with the hotspot. When this ad-hoc net comes up, udev or deviceKit (or whatever) rules enable the automatic sharing.

I'm currently pursuing a CCNA certification. I need to use a so called "Eagle Server" to do my lab exercises. I have the Linux Live CD (FEDORA CORE 3 KERNEL 2.6.12) and I have installed it on a laptop that I have (TOSHIBA EQUIUM M50-164, PSM57E). This laptop had Windows XP installed, so I created a 4GB FAT partition and booted with the Live CD.I need the CD in the tray every time I want to run Linux. Without the CD, it boots to Windows XP. Also, according to Eagle Server documentation, any modification to the server is available even after reboot. Well, that is not happening to me. Does someone have a clue why the server doesn't save the modifications? Is it because I need the Live CD to boot, even after I have installed on a FAT partition?
Eagle server supports only 1 network interface card, eth0. When I first run the server it showed me that the hardware mapped to eth0 was my wireless adapter. There is no option to disable it in my BIOS, so I just removed the hardware myself. After rebooting it show eth1394 on eth0. I presume that is the FireWire Adapter. What can I do so that eth0 is mapped to my LAN adapter (Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet)? Is there a way do disable FireWire? Please remember that due to 1st problem above, any changes to the server are not available after reboot So the main problem is that I can't ping from Eagle Server to the router and vice-versa

I purchased a WD My Book with Firewire. What I have noticed is that whether I run Fedora or Ubuntu, the file transfers are slow compared to Windows Vista. The drive is formatted NTFS. For example, on the Fedora system I get about 30MB/s. Boot into Vista and I get about 36MB/s. On my laptop, using Ubuntu, I get about 36MB/s. In Vista on the same laptop I get about 48MB/s. It was around 35MB/s in Vista, but then I turned on the drive caching (a Vista setting for "performance"). So my guess is that Linux in general has the same issue.
I notice a similar story with wireless N on the laptop. Much slower in Ubuntu than in Vista, by almost 50%. Why would this be? I tried Fedora Live on the laptop as well, but got no better results for either wireless-N or firewire400. What I do notice is that I get the following when attaching the drive:
scsi 11:0:0:0: Direct-Access WD My Book 1028 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4
sd 11:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg9 type 0

Any ideas on how to get this to work? I am ok with running it via usb cable, but would like the firewire option.
