View 14 Replies View RelatedI am brand new to Linux and Ubuntu. However it was very easy and smooth to install and get updated using my wired ethernet connection. I am now trying to understand how to have my wireless network adapter recognized or driver installed. I will be searching around the forums but it suggested I make an initial post as a new user. I am using an older Dell Inspiron 2200. I believe the chipset in my wireless adapter is indeed Broadcomm, so hopefully that will help direct any responses.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI install security updates - did so and ended up with a copy of fedora that goes into a loop. I suspect the prob is the driver to my video adapter. To run, I need to interrupt grub with an escape. It then shows me two choices the bad one 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686 and the old good one 2.6.31.5.- 127.fc12.i686 It defaults to the bad one, I change it to the good one and tell it ot proceed. this is inconvenient
I see that in /boot/grub/grub.conf the 2 systems are described I beleive that if I merely edit that file, taking out the refernece to the bad one, I will be ok That will leave the bad one on the disk but at least I wont have to go thru the ritual of interrupting grub. If I want to delete the bad one - after I've taken care of the grub.conf file, what do I do?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to try to reinstall a barebones xp on a compac laptop as a dual boot with 11.1. I repartitioned using gparted so I now have 20 Gb free. Here (I hope) is the output of fdisk -lu [URL] I spent a lot of time setting up opensuse and don't want to lose the settings, etc. Should I repartition with the 20G space "in front" of the linux partitions? Can I back up the linux settings so I can reinstall them if I lose everything? Is there a sort of windows emulator (wine?) that will run programs that won't run on opensuse, like netflix, tax prep software, etc? Too many questions I know but I would like a fairly simple foolproof fix if possible.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn my Ubuntu (10.04) system, the Ativa SMP-6AS webcam has worked out of the box. On a minimalistic (no gui) Debian Lenny system, it only creates devices for audio (/dev/audio1, /dev/dsp1, /dev/mixer1), but no corresponding /dev/video0 (like it does on Ubuntu). How do I find out what driver it's using on the Ubuntu system so I can install it on the Debian?

I want to install it from my 4 GB usb stick onto my 4 GB CF card. I dunno how to get CentOS correctly onto my usb stick. I have tried unetbootin method and method from centos wiki, but it does same thing - after loading vmlinuz and initrd.gz it reboots. But when I tried to boot from that same usb stick on my laptop, it worked. Has anyone some experiences with installing centos on ebox? Or does anyone know what to do with it? Gentoo for example boots correctly, but gentoo can't install of CF cards (live instalation CD hasn't it in kernel enabled) and doesn't know my ethernet card (same).
I know this isn't the place for this but I am having trouble with my wireless with Linux mint but ubuntu forums feels more friendly and knowledgeable about these problems the wireless adapter in question is a HornetTek HT-H5DN I have been to the company website they do have a driver but I can't compile it due to lack of experience it runs on a Ralink 2720 driver.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been googling and searching these forums and I can't find a fix. I just discovered that I have a headphone jack on the bottom of my monitor and it would be a lot more convenient to use that rather than the jack on my tower. However, when I switch to HDMI audio output I don't hear anything. I now it's not my cable because it works on my HDTV and throughput audio fine.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 with the Asus M4A78T-E mobo with integrated ATI HD 3300 graphics. I am running the official drivers from ATI, ATI Catalyst 10.3 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, the latest and greatest, not the one from Synaptic. I know this is a bad time to be looking for a fix since 10.4 is out in 8 days but if anyone knows a quick fix that would be great.
I have been struggled with wireless connection. Here is the things... My room doesn't have moduler jack. So basically my landlord is sharing with his wifi. Also, my desktop is using Netgear wireless adapter for internet. My laptop and desktop are windows 7 which can conncet with internet very well. But my Linux Os in my desktop couldn't conncet. Recently I installed ubuntu because my co-worker told me ubuntu can be applied to connect with internet through wireless.
However, how can my ubuntu os get wireless connection without ethernet cable. Actually, my harddisk drive is multiple boot containing windows 7, Ubuntu, and Centos. Windows 7 can connect internet smoothly. But you know, Ubuntu and Centos can't do nothing. So I am stacking this situation not to connect internet through Linux OS right now.
My Netgear USB adapter is WG111US.

Just received network adapter and unable to install. Belkin service was useless. Moved computer, running point to point on the LAN. Searching for a compatible driver and/or means of installation. Poor connection with Clear and modem's on top floor, Belkin's a good option.

I am relatively new to CentOS. I attempted to install 5.3 with firewire several weeks ago and abandoned the install because it was taking too long to figure out the problems. I've had to revisit this and am having troubles with it. I was told that CentOS 5 has firewire 1394 support. When I did the typical install, it didn't physically (manually) install the video1394 and raw1394 modules. At boot up, my computer says that video1394 and raw1394 are "Module(s) not found". If I do <lsmod> I get (*snippet of o/p),

Apparently, the wireless adapter Realtek 8171 uses the rtl8192se driver, which is currently available only as source from Realtek's website. Is building a driver equal to building a package? Should I follow the same cautions, say these ones?
