Debian :: Kernel Log "Machine Check Events Logged"

Mar 9, 2010

I have systemcrashes on my debian system since a few days now (didn't have any problems before) and the following entries in my kern.log: Machine check events logged

Where and how can I read these "Machine check events"? It has to be something wrong with the hardware, right?

I installed mcelog with aptitude. But it doenst give any output:

Ubuntu :: Modify Events That Are Logged?

Jun 5, 2011

I was looking at my logs and was wondering what the easiest way to go about removing certain things from being logged.

For instance I noticed by default Ubuntu seems to log all network traffic and handshakes with wifi etc and I would like to keep such out of my logs.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Compaq CQ60-206 - Machine Check Exception" Followed By A "Kernel Panic

Apr 28, 2009

First off let me say thanks psy_unix and fuji, the pci=nomsi allowed me actually finish install on my laptop. (Read this post)

Problems do not stop here however...Now, when it reboots after install all I get is a "Machine Check Exception" followed by a "Kernel Panic". I had to switch back to Vista Home finally (not happy about that).

I just bought it and it runs happily under Vista, I just don't run happily under Vista.

How to get CentOS running on this one?

Information:

Laptop:
Compaq CQ60-206US
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 64 bit (2Ghz Dual Core)
Mem: 2 GB
OS: CentOS 5.3 (tried 32 and 64 bit)

I have also tried CentOS 5.2 (32 and 64 bit) with the same results.

General :: Ubuntu 10.04 - Access VNC On A Server Without Having Been Logged In To The Machine First?

Sep 4, 2010

Possible Duplicate: Automatically start VNC server on startup I have a Linux server at home, and by default no-one is logged in to that box. I'd like to establish a remote desktop connection to it with VNC but this fails, unless I log in first physically. It's strange to me that VNC Viewer doesn't even ask for credentials, it just displays a "connection refused" error message. What's the best way to do this? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on the server.

Debian Configuration :: New Warning After Kernel Update - Machine Failed To Get I915 Symbols

Jun 22, 2011

I do not know if this is really something I should worry about. I am running Debian testing on my laptop (HP Pavillon dv6). Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?

Debian Multimedia :: Customising Events' Sounds In Squeeze?

Feb 15, 2011

Is there a way of changing the loud thump that announces the gdm login screen in Squeeze to something else? At the moment I cannot see how this can be easily done, other than turn event sounds off, which I don't want to do. Have I missed something? There seems to be very little event sound customisation in Squeeze, compared to Lenny. Also is there a way of getting Squeeze to play a short exit sound on logout or reboot? I know how to turn off the annoying system beep, that is there at the moment.

Debian :: Migration Check List - To Check - Prepare Or Reconfigure

Feb 3, 2010

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.

I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.

Debian :: Ssh Login Not Being Logged?

Nov 9, 2010

I just installed debian 5.06 i386 130MB that I downloaded yesterday(Monday). My problem is that when an incoming ssh connection to this debian box is established, but nothing is being logged to /var/log/auth.log on this box. I've tail -f the auth.log which verified nothing is getting logged for ssh. The auth.log is showing activity, mostly root logins and logoffs, but no ssh activity.I understand that /etc/rsyslog.conf may control what gets logged. I had pastebinned this file on #debian but people noted that it looked fine.I have not made any changes to the system, like editing config files or anything. The system is essentially just out of the box. What else can I do to figure this out? Otherwise, I am pleased with how Debian installed on 2002 vintage machine, and is running in console mod

Hardware :: Check HP CP-1215 Toner Levels From A Remote Machine?

Dec 2, 2010

HP's apparently all but useless Linux site suggests that their hplip drivers give you that capability. However, it also seems to expect that I will be running a GUI to use their tools.

My CP-1215 is attached to my server which doesn't have a GUI installed.

Previously I'd been using the open source CUPS driver, which seemed to work pretty well. However, I recently ran low on one colour of toner which messed up the printing. The toner-out lights on the printer never cam one, so replacing the toner cartridge was not the first thing I tried to fix it.

I've just installed the hplip / hp-plugin driver which also seems to be working. However, the CUPS web interface doesn't allow me to retrieve the toner status.

Has anyone had any luck retrieving the toner levels from an HP colour laserjet printer?

Debian :: NIS And Guest Accounts - Logged In On Two Different Machines ?

Jan 27, 2010

I'm running a network with a NIS. I want to implement a guest account on my network. The requirements are that the guest can log in on multiple computers at the same time and that the guest account's file are wiped out when they log off. The problem is that when guest is logged in on two different machines some programs (like firefox) will only run on one of them at a time. Is there anyway around this?

Also: I anticipate a settings nightmare. If guest is logged in on one machine and changes the desktop background then guest logs in on another machine will the background change in both places? What happens when the same file is written at the same time?

Debian :: Prevent Shutdown When Several Users Are Logged In

Dec 30, 2010

If there is a simple way to prevent accidental shutdown when the following situation occurs:

Sometimes, I log in on my father's computer to run some administrations' tasks (updates...). For that, I use SSH since I'm frequently far from my parents and what I want is to prevent a shutdown run by my father. Of course, he should be able to turn off by himself if nobody else is connected.

Molly-Guard allows to prevent distant shutdown, my request is a kind of complementary software.

Does anyone know a project which could fit with this request? Do you have simple ideas to write a short code I know bash, perl, python...

Debian Configuration :: User Cannot Shutdown While Root Is Logged In

Jun 29, 2011

on my netbook I've tried to make possible for my user to shutdown without needing a password. battery could run low when I'm not in front of it. Editing sudoers has allowed my user to shutdown the system, but Gnome still prompts me for the root password whenever root is logged in too. That's usually the case, because to avoid entering the root password multiple times whenever I need elevated privileges and not wanting to cache the root password, I keep a Root Terminal always open.

Networking :: Check When Kernel Has A Route To Particular IP Address?

Dec 11, 2010

I'm working on a userspace application that needs to find if the kernel has a route configured for a particular destination address, and what port it would be routed from. I'm hoping there is a simple kernel call that will do this for me, but haven't been able to find it yet :-)

I don't want to actually send a packet to do this, just query the kernel if where it *would* send the packet if I did.

The only method I've come up with is to get the kernel routing table through rtnetlink then check each entry to see if it matches my destination address. I guess this will work (after one or two tries to get the logic right ;-) ) but I'd rather do a single call if there is one.

1)I need to install the Bigmem-kernel to detect the ram more than 4Gb,

2) or change some kernel parameters in configuration file and rebuild the kernel

Is there any another solution for this to update operating system to detect the more RAM
