OpenSUSE :: File Manager View Properties (in Details Columns)
Mar 1, 2010
I am newbie in openSUSE as still in transition from windows OS. How to display file properties (details other than size, date, permissions, owner, group, type) using file manager applications similar to Dolphin, Konquerer, etc. I have heaps of files ported from windows environment where I used to store descriptive subjects in one of the file properties field. In windows environment, I would have used file manager such as explorer to display the selected file properties field when searching for particular file before opening it. I know openoffice supports the file properties feature but unfortunately it would appear Linux OS currently does not have a file manager application ready to display these information.
i've recently switched from windows to fedora 15.....in windows i used to use "ALT+ENTER" to view file properties like size etc. what is the shortcut for the same in fedora 15....?
I am trying to sort image files I've assembled for document production, and I need to be able to see the height and width of the images without having to open them one by one. Is there a way to view an image's physical size in the folder window?
I like view file listings in Nautilus in the List View. By default the "Location" column is not visible and I have to set it to visible through "View -> Visible Columns" each time. Is there anyway to make the change permanent?

I am trying to write a script which compares a log file with reference file. The log file has a table, the LHS of the table are constants strings and RHS of table values changes if there are any changes in configuration.code...
Here I am looking for a script which compares test.log file ( whose RHS data-types are known prior whether it is digit or string) with test.Ref which is reference file for test.log file. It will be really helpful for me if any of you give some idea about writing this script.
I have a binary file which display a lot of message when I run that binary. This binary file is statically linked with many files which are unknown to me. Is there any way to know from which file (obj or static lib) does these printf come from?
There is a way to get to know about the source of a symbol, but I am interested about the source of a string.
if there's a tab-delimited file under /usr/desktop, how can I determine the number of rows and columns of the file in shell? And, if told the the 3rd column of the file contains only numerical values and all values in the 5th column are unique, how can I verify these in shell?
I'm writing a script and I have doubts on how to assign values to an already established variable. The value for the vatriable would be coming from a file with three columns. I'm using the awk command for this. Am I doing it correctly? which of the following two ways is the better one or if both are wrong which one should I use?
I am trying to install Fedora-ds on Fedora Core 10 and I am getting a weired error.it just says check the log file for more details and in the /tmp/setupXX.log

I've searched everywhere and I can't come up with a good solution. For each line I need to find the average, min, and max. I've seen plenty of solutions where the number of columns is fixed, unfortunately for me these lines can get pretty large. My thought was to read each line individually into an array, loop through the array and find the avg, min, and max that way but i haven't had much luck. I can read each line using a while loop but I'm having trouble with the array part, or perhaps that's not the best solution?
Each line of the file I am sorting is in the following format:
<url> <month> <day>
For example:
[URL]
I wrote the following to sort:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl $in = shift; chomp($in);
[code]....
The script worked fine for my small testing files, but failed in my input file. The input file is 18MB and containing more than 300,000 lines. The output will contains some lines like that:
I need a little help creating a ftp script that will take connection and file details from text files. For example:ftpscript.sh - script that looks for details and does transferftpparams.txt - ftp server connection details in single line csv formatftpfiles.txt - files that need to be transfer, one file per line.I have tried using awk with no success
How can hide it ?Or unless to request a password?I want to do this because Sometimes My cousins use my PC and I don't really want to set an account for each one so I let them use the mine.Problem is I have important files that i don't want to hide but to make them unerasable (I doubt that word exist though)I mean to not let them erase them but some are pretty clever and they Know of the properties option so they can change the attributes.
Im trying to run a program but my system won't let me.i used to be able to run executable files without a problem but i can't anymore when i double click the file i get "there is no application installed for executable files" i am unable to check "allow executing file as program" in file properties there is a script file which runs the program but all i get from the terminal is "permission denied"
Recently when I try to see the properties of any file in nautilus (3.14.1), the program show this error message before the file properties GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Tracker1.SparqlError.Internal: Error opening database
I'm having trouble finding the correct modifiers to the stat command to print out the file/folder properties in human readable format. I would like to run a command on a given file or folder and have the file size in kb, mb, or gb size as opposed to byte size in addition to other pertinent information.
I have a WD external HD that I had set up with Mandrivia 2010. It worked fine, could read and write to it no trouble. Then I switched to Suse 11.3 and it says I do not have permissions any more to do anything but read. I have logged on as superuser (root) and tried everything. It will not change file or even drive permissions...

I am unable to access the File Management properties.I go System > Preferences > File Management.I get a "Bug Buddy" window (I filed a report, details below).Or, it also happens if I type: 'nautilus-file-management-properties' in the terminal.
I have an OpenSuSe 11.0 running openldap (managed by yast) for user authentication on some services. Is there an easy way that I can provide for users to change their own passwords (Preferably a web interface)?
since yesterday when I open up an explorer style window, say I browsed folders in Gnome for each folder it opens a new window. However; when I go to change it so it does it in the same window either through edit properties or system/preferences/file management it does not open and instead a bugzilla window opens as it crashes (taking my desktop with it until it refreshes)
I have a newly installed Kubuntu 10.04 running here, works fine except for one thing.
I have a kind of "fileserver" and it has a samba share that I have mounted in the home folder of my desktop computer ("/home/xxx/fileserver", the server is running an older version of Ubuntu, can't exactly remember what it is but the filesystem is ext2, if that's of any importance).
I have large files on the server, mostly video. When I use Dolphin (or Konqueror, doesn't make any difference) and right click one of these large files and choose Properties, it takes a LONG time to load the properties window. As if it copies the file to local hd before opening properties, or something.
The reason why I posted here and not in the networking section is, that I had the exact same setup with my previous installation which was Kubuntu 8.04, and also at least three different Ubuntu's before that. Never had this problem before, so I think my server and networking thingies are okay.
I'm looking for a way of mounting an encrypted volume - home folder or a separate mount point, using only the standard login authentication (ie KDM or ssh). I thought the pam_mount module provided this, but I still get prompted for a password on the console at boot time. This is inconvenient as both my main desktops are headless HTPCs. I want the login credentials to be passed through, at log in time. I'm guessing this is possible, but to be honest, encryption is one thing in Linux that still completely confuses me.
I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with: crw-rw---- 1 root root ... It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev
I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...
(I will add idVendor/Product values later)
The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.
Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'
I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.3. I wonder. How do you edit screensaver properties? For example get phosphor to display a stream of news? You could specify in Fedora and Ubuntu.
