I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend any scanners that will take 35mm - and ideally the old 120/620 and 127 formats! - transparencies and negatives to digitise our old memories and family history.I'm in the UK and the machines use Ubuntu.

Just acquired a slide/negative scanner (Traveller TV6500) which is reputed only to work under Winderz. Anyone know of a way to get it to run under Fedora 12?

I've tried running it in a VirtualBox Windows XP, but it doesn't appear to work - goes off & churns but doesn't appear to get a picture back.
I just received a Canon Pixma MX320 as a gift.
I am currently running the Ubuntu 10.04 OS
I was able to get the printer up and running by downloading the printer driver for debian linux (3.1) from the Canon site without any problems.
Unfortunately I am not having the same luck with the scanner.
I tried downloading ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) (1.3) from the same Canon site but have not yet been able to get the XSane Image Scanner to recognize this scanner driver for my Canon.
I was able to get my Epson Stylus NX510 printer up and running (after much issue), but I can't get the scanner working. I'm on a laptop, and the printer/scanner is wifi enabled and broadcasts with its own IP address. I can print with no problem, but xsane and simple scan don't recognize the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

It's connected and printer is working through the scanner.But i can't get the system to recognise the scanner.
I'm all new to Ubuntu, and i thought it was easy and terminal is a totally new thing to me.
Is there a workaround to get this scanner to work through graphical interface install, or is terminal wisdom needed...
After downloading and installing iscan and run it i see this message:
Could not send command to scanner. Check scanner's status.
After command sane-find-scanner:

Recently got a Canon Canoscan 8800F after looking it up on the SANE site and said it was completely supported for Linux.
I have downloaded the pixma drivers and have compiled the command line program, but it can't find the scanner.
lsusb returns a Canon scanner Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04a9:1901 Canon, Inc.
and sane-find-scanner returns:found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1901 [CanoScan]) at libusb:001:005
but scanimage -L (under my user login or sudo) returns only the webcam. No other scanner found.
My system is running Linux Mint 7, ia64 kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

I've installed XSane Image Scanner. When I first opened it, it searched for my scanner and didn't give any error messages, and it had my scanner model in the heading of the scan window. But when I hit the scan button, it gave me saying, "Failed to start scanner: error during device I/O.I closed everything, and opened XSane again. This time it said there was no scanner available. The scanner is plugged into the USB port and uses that for both power and data. It's a Canoscan Model N650U.

i intall hplip with synaptic in order to setup my scanner, printer is working, i dont need the fax, but the scanner is not working with xsane.
normal user and sudo see the scanner with
$ scanimage -L

I'm currently using Fedora 12.I'm having trouble ripping a DVD. Every time I use cropdetect in Mplayer, it gives me negative x,y values which makes it impossible for me to use Mencoder to remove the borders. I shall display the info below. Also, may I add that I'm trying to use 2 pass encoding to recieve better video quality. I would like convert the DVD to an AVI file. I've compiled all the binary codes for various codecs so I'm not sure what's wrong.
Also, it can not find any audio tracks on the DVD either. I was successfully able to rip the trailor for a different movie on the DVD to avi which was track 3 no problem (wiith good quality sound that synced up)I'm new to Fedora and Mplayer/Mencoder, but "WinBlows XP" doesn't seem to help with ripping good quality videos so I decided to try something in Fedora.
Fedora, and other distros install a PAE kernel if the hardware supports it.
Are there any negative effect on running a PAE kernel on a machine with less than 3-4Gb ram ?
I was using Super+M keyboard shortcut yesterday to enable/disable the Compiz Negative theme (inverted colours), but now when I do the same keyboard shortcut it just opens the Mail/Chat/Broadcast menu next to the date/calendar/clock in the top panel.

For example, photos on Facebook have negative colours, but not the thumbnail versions of the profile pictures do not. I have tried reinstalling Firefox in Synaptic to no avail. On another partition I have an installation of openSUSE 11.4 sharing the same /home (and therefore all Firefox settings etc), but no negative colours.

when I was first trying out Linux and installing Partitions, I did it right, but I used 200GB of Space, and so I decided I didn't want to use it VIA Partition and I wanted to use it VIA Wubi... and I didn't know the correct way to uninstall it... So I went to Windows Partition Manager and manually deleted the partition myself with the OS in it, but the thing is, it turned into 200GB of Unallocated space, and I couldn't give it back to my C: so it's just there... and now, a month *Present day* I want to install Mint 10 KDE and now... The big problem... I can't assign Linux Mint 10 to the unallocated space, only to the rest of the HDD... how do I assign it to the "Free" space? I tried "Specify Partitions Manually" but there was nothing that showed up. What would happen if I assigned negative 19% for Linux? Would it cause negative effects?

So, possible to disable it without negative effects? If so how to do that? The only problems I've had relating to Gnome have been Evolution. I'll just copy email links and paste them in Gmail.

I have a script I use for launching a game installed with wine. I cannot/wont run this game as root but I need to be able to use nice --7. As of now I can't I -- ofc -- get "permission denied"..
So how do I make the full range of niceness ( [-19;20] IIRC ) available for all users on my system -- or even just for 1 user?
I seem to hit a combination of keys that makes my screen look like I am looking at a negative of a photograph. Does anyone know what the combination keys are to accomplish this, and how may I get my screen back to normal without rebooting.

I tyred to to go threw the player and see if I changed the settings some how.I even tried other players. I had been watching ..... videos earlier, it was a little choppy video but colours were fine, then I think loaded the flash players and after that the colour went to negative.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my only hard drive, I have it partitioned for Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11, Earlier today I performed "Shrink Volume" on the Windows partition, successful, opened 22.74GiB I would like to increase my 10GiB Ubuntu 11 Partition to 16GiB, then create a partition for trying out chromium. I know the following discussion I am going to sound like a noob but for simplicity bear with me. When I say "left" I actually mean tracks closest to the center of the cylinder and right, those further away.
sda1 and sda2 are my Windows 7 Partitions, Then I have 22.75GiB of unallocated space from the shrink volume, then sda3 extended, sda5 swap, and sda6 ext4 /. How do I "slide" the swap and Ubuntu 11 ext partitions to the left while maintaining their contents? Am I just as well backing up, then formatting the Ubuntu 11 partition? My first thought was to ghost the Ubuntu partition to the unallocated space then updating grub, but grub did not see it. The following is a screenshot of gparted's view of my HD.

why isn't "OnSlideShowPageChange" getting invoked when I run the slide show?
