General :: Freeing Disk Space ?

Sep 29, 2009

Had this problem in a few different instances where a process was creating a set of files in directory and using those files.

Some one just happened to go to the dir and deleted those files without stopping the process. The result being that as the process is still telling the machine that the disk usage is still what it initially was (df -h shows the old disk usage) , where as a du -h or a ls -lh on that same dir show that the files are not there.

Once this happened with mysql where the user delete the database dir in /var/database_name in the mysql home dir. The result being that the dusk usage was still showing as the old one even if the files were missing. This was resolved by restarting the mysql server.

Similar thing happened with some other processes where on restarting the problem was resolved..

My question being is there a method to solve this problem by whithout restarting the concerned process.. Some magical command like free disk or recheck dis usage :-) .. may be too much to ask but can some one help me out here.

General :: Deleting Files In Ubuntu Doesn't Free Up Space On Partition

Dec 22, 2009

After running photorec I went from having ~30 gb of free space to having 0 bytes of free space. I have deleted all the results of photorec and various other large files and removed them from trash but it still has not freed up any space. Also, my firefox no longer has back/forward functionality which I'm sure would be fixed by a reinstall but seeing as I have 0 space, I can't really do that. Any thoughts?

Ubuntu :: Free Up Space By Deleting Old Kernels?

Feb 12, 2010

the method for freeing up space by deleting old kernels is made to sound very simple: go into Synaptic, select the outdated kernels, mark for complete removal, and Apply. Easy. But . . . when I mark a particular kernel for removal, Synaptic also wants to remove a lot of other things, some of which do not bear version numbers and seem generic. I am, to put it mildly, very leery of just telling it to go ahead, lest I end up losing things I should have kept and having a dead or at least crippled box.

Say, for example, that I mark for Complete Removal the line linux-image-2.6.22-15-generic; when I go to Apply that one deletion, I get a laundry list of to-die files that includes:

linux-generic
linux-image-generic
linux-restricted-modules-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-27-generic
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-27-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-15-generic
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-15-generic,........

Ubuntu :: Do Not Regain Space After Deleting File?

Feb 10, 2011

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 on two different computers.I have the same problem with both .... when I delete a file on my hard drive or a removable drive I dont get the space back even after I empty the trash. The file is gone and deleted but its as if its only hidden from me seeing it and still sitting on my drive. For example when I have files on a thumb drive and I delete them and try and put new files on there it will tell me I dont have enough disk space even though all files have been deleted, the only way for me to get the disk space back is to format the drive.I have now realized I have the same problem with my hard drives, I delete files but I dont get any space back, eventually I will have a full hard drive but no files on there

Software :: Deleting Delay From Mp3 Files?

Mar 26, 2010

I have a large collection of CDs that I ripped to mp3 a few years back. I would like to go sell them to a store and get some money for them (I haven't used the physical CDs in years). The deal is that when I started ripping the CDs, the program I was using would insert a 2 second delay between songs. I would like to know if there is a program/command that I can use to remove this delay between songs. Some of them have 0 delay, so songs that fade into each other sound correct. Other albums have songs that are supposed to seamlessly fade into each other, but they don't because of this delay. Is there any way to remove that delay between songs or do I have to re-rip the CD? Figuring out which albums have that problem and re-ripping the CD is going to take a very, very long time.

Ubuntu :: Completely Deleting Files & Virtualbox OSX

Feb 27, 2010

It turns out I caught the Linux bug. I'm now completely obsessed with it. Most of the time if I can't get something to work I do a quick web search, and I find the solution to my problem in the first link or three. This is the exception. I wanted to install XP or 2000 using Virtualbox OSE just in case I needed to look up something on Windows or print something off (can't find any drivers for my Lexmark printer). I tried XP first and it gave me an error. Then I tried 2000. At this point I went to delete the program and try again. The first thing I tried was sudo apt-get remove virtualbox. Then when I re-installed it, I still had my settings and partitions on there. I then went to the add/remove programs. Same thing after the third install. I then went to the Synaptic Package Manager and clicked completely delete files (or however it was worded). After the install it still did the same thing as the previous times. When I try and load Virtualbox it says "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted.". Also sometimes my pointer will get locked inside Windows. How do I get out of that? The only thing I was able to find was hit CTRL + ALT + Back and it exits both Windows and Linux.

Ubuntu :: Deleting Files On A Windows Share

Mar 17, 2010

I am connecting to a Windows 2003 server share from my Ubuntu 9.10 machine. This is not a problem & deleting normal files is fine. What I am actually trying to do is remove a virus from this server. If I have AV software running on the server it is constantly picking up the virus & eventually this kills the server. The AV software is unable to remove the virus on the server, but is able to on desktop machines.Anyway, I thought use Linux to do the job & get the AV software back on the server. No go. I get a permission denied error when trying to remove the files with rm -f "filename"Is there anyway around this? I am reluctant to start the server with the Ubuntu live CD as it is in use as a file server. If I could remove the files manually this would be good.
