Dec 9, 2010Other than several other problems on my new Sony VAIO I solved with workarounds (it's a terrible machine for working with Linux especially for NVIDIA drivers) I cannot make my microphone working.

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.2 On Old Sony Vaio Laptop?
Feb 3, 2010I tried to installed OpenSUSE 11.2 "i586" on an older Sony Vaio laptop (model PCG-XG9) with 20 GB HD and 128 or 256 MB RAM. There is no ethernet port, but I have a PCMCIA WLAN card "Cabetron RoamAbout 11 Mbit/s", which should work perfectly with any Linux. The computer had Win98 on it originally (which, of course, after all installation attempts is now destroyed). The problem is that I cannot install to the end at all - no matter what I try:
1) Having the disk as a single FAT partition (made by a Win98 installation CD), it appears that the installer cannot create the correct partitions needed for Linux.
2) Having deleted the DOS partition with FDISK from Windows98 - which is like buying a completely new, unformatted HD from a store. But again, it cannot automatically set the partitions...
Is there a manual / instruction page somewhere how I should partition the disk manually (how to do it, and what sizes are recommended for each partition)?

the notebook have 4 ssd cards in raid 0 - its an intel software raid but suse recognize it and i am able to install it. kde or gnome installation is success but a boot loader cant be installed. i can life with - start install, cancel and start the installed system. but nothing found. also i could enter the dev name for boot but what dev is that.

Nov 29, 2010Got this new Sony from BB on black friday. I also have the pcg-7184l that works fine and the specs looked very similar. Everything seems to work but the touch pad. I am running able to use a USB mouse with no issue. A search online has not been fruitful so now to ask the community. I am willing to start from basics because I am either overlooked something or missing something. On hardware info all I show is the Sony Jogdial and the USB mouse under mouse. That is making me think that HAL is not even detecting the hardware. According to Sony the windows driver is ALPS so for some reason this one is not being detected by the kernel. I had done a clean install and then updates but the touchpad still does not seem to work in Linux but it was working under Windows7 (has since been removed but I do have an image if I have to restore back to windows.

Jun 9, 2010I've been trying to install Ubuntu 64bit on Sony Vaio CW and the Screen is 14 inch when I boot from CD it seems to work normal but after i select "Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu" then the screen goes black like nothing happening but the CD runs for while then stop. Again I reboot to try again this time I press F6 then select "nomodeset" and it boots fine I was happy though, after installation success when I boot again WTF it goes black again and then I reboot and press "E" during the options that showing to select OS then I remove "Quit Splash".
I guess then I add "nomodeset" and control+X to boot, it works fine. So when I log in and of course I activate the Nvidia Graphic Driver then I reboot and WTF again the screen was out sync or something like the the screen didn't show properly. The Application menu normally is on the upper left of the screen but this time it was on the center of screen and the Shut down button came to the left side and i have to move the mouse cursor to the right and then it would appear on the left just like the resolution is to big for the screen.
OpenSUSE :: USB Device Not Available?
Jun 9, 2011Suse 11.4 32bit. Formerly when I plugged in the first USB device it would be identified as /dev/sdb, my primary SATA drive being /dev/sda. The second USB device as /dev/sdc and so on. That has now changed so that the first USB device is /dev/sdc, second one /dev/sdd etc. This causes havoc with several backup scripts. How can I revert to previous assignments?

Apr 13, 2010I am running Ubuntu 9.10 from the install CD on a Vaio VGN TX650P laptop to try it (my first time with Linux so please bear with me) and it all works EXCEPT it is not recognizing my wireless connection.I went to Ubuntu Help and in Section 5 - Wireless Troubleshooting, Check for Device Recognition, it recommended:1.Open a Terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type the command: sudo lshw -C networkYou should see an output, along with the words "CLAIMED, UNCLAIMED, ENABLED or DISABLED"What I get is below (It also lists the ethernet connections as network 0) but I don't see any CLAIMED etc.

May 2, 2010I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ340E. I installed Ubuntu about 6 months ago and had a problem-free time with it. I then got busy with other stuff (house work, etc.) and hadn't worked on Ubuntu for about a month. Now I switch on my Vaio with Ubuntu and I find the screen is just too bright.Since 10.04 was just coming up, I thought this would be fixed when I update. I updated, but the screen is still too bright.
I searched the forum for answers and found only some pretty old threads which were about the Fn key combos (which, obviously, doesn't work), spicctrl, etc.So I followed the instructions here. I did just what Step 1: Checking for Module says, but Terminal just doesn't give any output.

Sep 10, 2010I have never been able to use any network connection on my Vaio except wireless. In many places (hotels, usually) where there are wired connections I get nothing. Whereas with another Vaio I have owned with UbuntuLL also it work just fine.
I have 1gig RAM and 10.4 installed with all updates. Is there a way to test the ethernet part of the computer?

Sep 15, 2010I'm trying to do a complete install on an old Sony PCG-505 and, based on what I've learned so far, the BIOS automatically re-maps the CARDBUS cd-rom to appear as IDE at /dev/hde instead of /dev/hdc. Apparently, it was possible to use:Ide2=0x180,0x386to work around this issue with the 2.4 kernel, but this won't work with the new 2.6 kernel;I've just tried using the Alternate Installer (Debian) for a command line install but the installer gets to the partitioner and then appears to stop. Now what??
I've left the old Win98 OS on the 6 GB hard drive expecting to be able to reformat the entire drive during the installation, but maybe that's not the case?I have yet to successfully boot to any live CD from any distribution on this machine (including puppy and DSL) and I'm not really sure what to do at this point.I'm a (very) new user and have little command line experience but I'm learning and I can copy-paste just as well as the next guy

Dec 17, 2010I've just acquired a Vaio PCG-FX801 with Phoenix bios version R0121K5.In the boot order, it lists "+Removable Devices", but on expanding the menu, only gives "Legacy Floppy Drives".I only discovered this after unsuccessfully trying to boot from a stick with the 10.10 netbook iso on it.Is it possible to get round this,or should I put the iso on a cd,or should I download the desktop iso onto a cd, and use that? General :: Switching From Vista - On Sony Vaio ?
Dec 18, 2010I have decided to switch from Vista to Linux on my Sony Vaio and wanted to know the best way to do it.
Basically i want to set my laptop like this because i want to get involved with wireless security testing.
I am thinking about taking the Backtrack wifu course http://www.offensive-security.com/on...backtrack-wifu.
Now obviously it seems i will need Backtrack, so what is the correct way to go about installing? Should i try and purchase a cd to install or is there better ways?
Cannot wait to move away from Vista. I think it has been making me ill. ps.. i also want to learn BASH and Perl, so that is basically going to be the setup.
Slackware :: Cannot Control Brightness Settings On Vaio - 13.37
May 11, 2011I just finished installing Slackware64 13.37 on my Sony Vaio PCG-7153L, and I'm having issues controlling the LCD brightness of the laptop. It still has the stock Slack kernel 2.6.37.6 SMP The brightness controls worked on Fedora 12-14, as well as the Ubuntu 10.04 live disc. I checked /proc/acpi/, but there's nothing in there to control brightness. I reloaded the sony_laptop kernel module, and from dmesg I get:

Jan 10, 2011I am trying to install a 11.3 virtual machine through Xen on a 11.3 installation. I am trying to install from the opensuse DVD. I get to this point, setting up everything (I can only do paravirtualization) Then the DVD spins for a little while and after that I am returned this error message "device 0 vif could not be connected opensuse....."
I tried a bunch of different settings in the previous screen and I always end up with this error I googled around and it seem to be a problem in different distros but I could not spot a solution at all

OpenSUSE Network :: Device YaST - Can't Identify YaST - "Unknown Network Device"
Dec 8, 2010In my YaST Network Settings (11.3), I see an entry labelled "Unknown Network Device" how to remove the confusion? The Overview tab also correctly lists my three known network devices (listed below), as does the Hardware Information utility. This is the output of lspci, and as far as I can tell, is accurate and complete. So what has YaST seen that it can't identify?

Apr 17, 2010I used to have an Ubuntu-Windows partition, but (what do you know?) Windows Crashed, and wouldn't boot anymore. So I reinstalled Windows, deleting my Ubuntu partition. Instead of reinstalling Ubuntu afterwards, I decided to give Debian a try. So here I am. I can't find drivers for my wireless network however, and it's quite annoying to have to plug in the Wired Connection with which I am writing this.
My main specs are:

Aug 31, 2010Ethernet, bluetooth and video work fine. I also managed to get the wireless card working by installling "firmware-iwlwifi". I can make the touchpad work sending to the kernel the parameter "i8042.nopnp" at boot time(grub), but then I get the computer frozen for a second every five second so I decided to use a usb mouse, until I get another fix.As you can see I can use the laptop except that...I have no sound at all, I can only hear something using headphones.I've been searching the web but the only thing I found is a fix in ubuntu using some kernel-modules from backports repository, but can't install them on debian.
