OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.2 On Old Sony Vaio Laptop?

Feb 3, 2010

I tried to installed OpenSUSE 11.2 "i586" on an older Sony Vaio laptop (model PCG-XG9) with 20 GB HD and 128 or 256 MB RAM. There is no ethernet port, but I have a PCMCIA WLAN card "Cabetron RoamAbout 11 Mbit/s", which should work perfectly with any Linux. The computer had Win98 on it originally (which, of course, after all installation attempts is now destroyed). The problem is that I cannot install to the end at all - no matter what I try:

1) Having the disk as a single FAT partition (made by a Win98 installation CD), it appears that the installer cannot create the correct partitions needed for Linux.

2) Having deleted the DOS partition with FDISK from Windows98 - which is like buying a completely new, unformatted HD from a store. But again, it cannot automatically set the partitions...

Is there a manual / instruction page somewhere how I should partition the disk manually (how to do it, and what sizes are recommended for each partition)?

I've just acquired a Vaio PCG-FX801 with Phoenix bios version R0121K5.In the boot order, it lists "+Removable Devices", but on expanding the menu, only gives "Legacy Floppy Drives".I only discovered this after unsuccessfully trying to boot from a stick with the 10.10 netbook iso on it.Is it possible to get round this,or should I put the iso on a cd,or should I download the desktop iso onto a cd, and use that? I want to try it out on this laptop before installing it.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Allocated Space On New Sony Vaio Laptop

Feb 24, 2010

I successfully before install Ubuntu on my last laptop along with windows vista and it was rather easy because ubuntu allowed me to partition the disk so simply. However, on my vaio, my whole hard disk is partition and there is no unallocated space. It will not allow me to partition the disk and when I boot up the ubuntu live cd to install, the partitioner doesn't look the same and I'm hesitant to make any changes because I'm afraid I'm going to damage my data. I have a 500GB HDD in which I want to use just 60GB for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows 7. Also, I'm running 64-bit Windows if that matters at all.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install On Vaio PCG-505VE?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm trying to do a complete install on an old Sony PCG-505 and, based on what I've learned so far, the BIOS automatically re-maps the CARDBUS cd-rom to appear as IDE at /dev/hde instead of /dev/hdc. Apparently, it was possible to use:Ide2=0x180,0x386to work around this issue with the 2.4 kernel, but this won't work with the new 2.6 kernel;I've just tried using the Alternate Installer (Debian) for a command line install but the installer gets to the partitioner and then appears to stop. Now what??

I've left the old Win98 OS on the 6 GB hard drive expecting to be able to reformat the entire drive during the installation, but maybe that's not the case?I have yet to successfully boot to any live CD from any distribution on this machine (including puppy and DSL) and I'm not really sure what to do at this point.I'm a (very) new user and have little command line experience but I'm learning and I can copy-paste just as well as the next guy

Ubuntu :: Brightness Not Changing On Sony Vaio Cw Laptop?

I am having problems with the brightness control on my sony vaio laptop, at virst when i upgraded the driver for the VGA card the whole screen went blank, I had to port a bin file from windows and write my own EDID file to get it to work (nVidia GT 230M), but I am having problems with the brightness, although ubuntu does read the input from the keys (FN+...), the brightness refuses to change, adding the brightness applet to the taskbar does not work either. I really need to be able to change my brightness because the battery usage is off the charts.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 Doesn't Display On Vaio Laptop's Screen

Oct 23, 2010

Recently I install ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio laptop. After the CD boot I always got a black screen, after a week i figured that there's nothing wrong, it's just the screen doesnt show up on my laptop's screen. So I use an external monitor and It showed up as normal.

But I need to have it show up on my laptop's screen. I tried to use "additional driver" to activate latest Nvidia driver but after that even my external monitor doesnt work too. Latest driver doesnt work properly i guess. I did try to install older driver version manually but after I turned of gdm, install driver and reboot, my ubuntu always starts with tty1 command terminal. tried ctrl+alt+7 but it stucked at (checking battery state), startx doesnt help me return to graphical screen too.

I got help from a moderator here but the best result so far is to edit my /etc/default/grub. Change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
Sudo update-grub

after the reboot I have it shows up on my laptop's screen. But it seems low-bit color,a bit grand to me(compared to external monitor, both w/o driver). Anw i checked system/preference>monitor . It showed up that my monitor:unknown. I can't choose other resolutions, refresh rate = 0.

I always know its my widescreen is the problem. I have had a lot of problems dealing wgames/application (on windows) can't work on 16:9 mode. install a stable Nvidia driver

Everything I tried in the past weeks is in here [URL] My laptop is SONY VAIO VPCCW19FX, Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, widescreen monitor

Fedora Installation :: F12 (Install Or Upgrade Existing System) Sony Vaio

Jun 22, 2010

I've had such good luck with Fedora (and this Forum), I'm attempting to put F12 on wife's brand new Sony Vaio, a VPCEB11FM, a 64bit system. I downloaded the Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso, made sure it was ok with sha256.exe, then burned the image to DVD. Booted it up and let it default to "install or upgrade an existing system". It dead-ended in a dark blue or black screen. I re-started and examined the other options. Thought I'd try the one that says: "Install system with basic video driver". Got all the way through to where it got ready to start downloading files. Can't get past that point because it attempts to get to the Internet using the Sony's wireless card! Why would it try the wireless when there's a wired NIC card in this PC that requires no special driver etc. How to proceed from here?

OpenSUSE Install :: Installation With OpenSUSE 11.2 64-bit On Hp Laptop?

Jun 13, 2010

I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 64bit on my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop. This is the Intel i7 processor with 8 Gb of RAM and Nvidia NVS 3100M graphics. I can boot from my 64bit installer LiveCD for KDE, but once I choose Install, after the first selection screen where I can change the default video at the bottom, I just get the openSUSE symbol and it hangs. I have tried all of the options at the first page for video setting or Kernel setting, My system specifications are as follows:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 Q 720 @ 1.60GHz RAM: 4GB DDR3 Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce GT 230M, 1024 MB Dedicated video memory. I should mention that I have currently a dual-boot OS, i.e. Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I also checked the burnt CD on another machine and the CD worked. So the problem is not because of the CD. I can't find any info on installing Suse on this notebook.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install Ubuntu On A Sony Vaio Desktop

Feb 9, 2011

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a Sony Vaio RX456DS Desktop (2001 vintage) which currently has Windows ME installed. As far as I can see, the Ubuntu disk is sound and the PC boots up from it. However, the initial screen looks very plain (no colours, text badly placed, not at all like the Welcome screen I expected) and if I select "Install" or "Try", I get a Ubuntu logo in the centre of the screen with 5 small red dots that progress from left to right, and then repeat this. Nothing else happens, even after a long time. Also, the initial screen has two more options - "Check the disc" and "Test the Memory" (or something similar). Can anyone suggest what, if anything, I should try now?

The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.

Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.

OpenSUSE Install :: Pentium 3 Laptop Sufficient For Opensuse?

May 14, 2011

The company im working at is planning to sell some of the old lappy One of them is this pentium3 laptop (for only 20 bucks DD)

the specs are:
pentium 3 1.1ghz
640MB ram
28GB hdd
wifi

Im wondering that if this machine is sufficient to run linux as a server I dont plan to use it for anything big just among me and a few friends Also, I dont rlly need any Desktop Environment as I can just ssh to this machine from my other laptops if I need to do any work on it.

Hence, my questions are as follows:

1. is this machine sufficient to run linux as a web/file server for me and a few friends?
2. also, is it okay to rlly run this laptop 24/7? (its a rlly old laptop after all)
3. lastly, altho I prefer using opensuse, but if I dont need any DE at all, would Arch be a better solution? (Its known to be very small and light)

OpenSUSE Install :: Live CD BOOT/INSTALL With HCL K38 Laptop

Mar 16, 2011

I am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.

Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.

I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.

I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.

How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 - Microphone Not Working On Sony Vaio

Dec 9, 2010

Other than several other problems on my new Sony VAIO I solved with workarounds (it's a terrible machine for working with Linux especially for NVIDIA drivers) I cannot make my microphone working.

Code:
malvasia:~ # uname -a
Linux malvasia.yacme 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-10-25 08:40:12 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
malvasia:~ # aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC275 Analog [ALC275 Analog] .....

I've found a patch to make mic on ALC275 working but I don't know if it's applicable to 11.3 kernel nor if there is a easier solution to adopt.

Ubuntu Installation :: Server Install On Laptop Doesn't Install Pcmcia Support?

Jan 12, 2011

I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card. When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

After that install, I decided I wanted to change to OpenSuse, so I downloaded the 4.6 Gig .iso file. Downloaded fine, and I burned in ImgBurn...no problems with it. So I popped the DVD into my laptop, hit F12 so I could boot from DVD drive, but the DVD isn't recognized. It goes straight into Ubuntu, and when Ubuntu starts up, it shows up as a blank DVD+R. (That was the 2nd time I burned it, the 1st DVD I burned had the same results.)
