I have never been able to use any network connection on my Vaio except wireless. In many places (hotels, usually) where there are wired connections I get nothing. Whereas with another Vaio I have owned with UbuntuLL also it work just fine.
I have 1gig RAM and 10.4 installed with all updates. Is there a way to test the ethernet part of the computer?
I have the sony vaio vpc f12jfx/b laptop. I tried installing stable Lenny from the CD. I got it installed by I have no ethernet, wifi, nvidia driver, or touch pad. Found linux drivers for my Nvidia 330M [URL]. Still need ethernet, WiFi, and touch pad.
My laptop was working fine on wireless till the userinterface changed and it defaulted to ethernet and now it won't let me go back on wireless How do i disable ethernet?
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 from the install CD on a Vaio VGN TX650P laptop to try it (my first time with Linux so please bear with me) and it all works EXCEPT it is not recognizing my wireless connection.I went to Ubuntu Help and in Section 5 - Wireless Troubleshooting, Check for Device Recognition, it recommended:1.Open a Terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type the command: sudo lshw -C networkYou should see an output, along with the words "CLAIMED, UNCLAIMED, ENABLED or DISABLED"What I get is below (It also lists the ethernet connections as network 0) but I don't see any CLAIMED etc.
I'm having trouble with 802.11n as of late in Ubuntu. I know my wife's computer used to connect faster but it seems to not be able to go over 54 Mbit in 10.10 any more either. Laptop is a stock Sony Vaio VPCZ12CGX/x which has an Intel Advanced-N 6200 card.
I can connect to the 2.4Ghz channel or the 5Ghz channel on my wap both are capable of up to 300Mps as per its configuration but neither go over 54Mbit. Both do about 160Mbit from this same location in Windows. Moving closer makes no difference.
My wireless connects and then in a few seconds disconnects and then again connects..... and so on. And even it seems to be connected I cannot reach any website. Could you please help me?
Below there are some information probably needed
1 ) Machine Brand and Model (PC/Laptop): Sony vaio VPCM13M1E (Netbook)
2 ) Wireless Brand, Model and Wireless Chipset: (I believe it should be one of these)01:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe 02:00.5 Ethernet controller: JMicron Technology Corp. JMC260 PCI Express Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
3 ) check interface:
a) ifconfig wlan0 wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 90:fb:a6:fe:ce:3d
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new Sony Vaio series S but it does not recognize my wireless card (I think). The button is on, but the light does not turn on, and it does not detect the wireless card. The wireless card, an Intel Centrino Advanced -n 6205, does work in ubuntu and when I run the command: lshw -C network, it appears UNCLAIMED, that I think it means the drivers are not in the Ubuntu libraries. What can I do to make it work? I've been struggling but I cannot make it work.
I've Vaio P39 with Karmic 9.10(2.6.31.21). Everything is ok excluding the WWAN. It just is missing in available networks list to connect (LAN and WiFi are ok).
Searching gives that WWAN adapter doesn't start at cold reboot and it's proposed to use Win7 to switching WWAN on and then restart. But it looks like - must have Win7 only to switching WWAN on...This kind of solution for some Vaio laptops

Probably bad searching from my side but I've no solution yet. Does it exist at all?
I've been searching all around information, how can I enable wifi, bluetooth and lan on this laptop. However, nothing works for me... rfkill unblock all command doesn't work.
how to do it in short time that would be just great, because I offered to my friend to repair her computer and install 'better' working Linux, but so far I even cannot enable wireless.
I am new to Ubuntu and I have problem with wireless connection. I could not find any wireless connection at all. I am now using wired connection. Sony Vaio SZ series, Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN My software details are:
$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions.
I upgraded the wireless card in my laptop (sony VAIO CW) due to the original Atheros being incurably slow. The new card is an Intel 6300 ultimate n. In Windows 7, after installing the relevant drivers everything worked without a hitch. In my Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however, I have been unable to get it working.Initially I had the compat-wireless modules installed (linux-backports-modules-wireless-generic), as I had done so to try and get the Atheros card working better. I tried removing all of these, and that made the difference that iwconfig now (instead of nothing) listed
I'm using a Vaio TT, which seems to use an Intel 5100 WiFi chipset, and a Linksys WRT54G2 (firmwares 1.0.1 and 1.0.4), ubuntus 10.10 and 10.04.
Wifi works fine out of the box. However if the other vaio tt in our office (running windows 7) comes online, my laptop stops being able to make new connections. It WILL stay connected to chat servers, and downloads SOMETIMES continue to work. However all new HTTP requests / ssh connections / rdp connections / pings fail. The laptop still appears to be "connected" to the wifi network.
This may also happen after an undetermined amount of time without the extra vaio. It is not solved by reconnecting or rebooting. Once the extra vaio leaves the building, everything works fine again. This problem does not happen at all if I boot into windows.
Intel wifi link 5100 not found on sony vaio backtrack 4 vmware I use vmware to load backtrack I have a sony vaio with 5100 AGN wifi card installed in it. I had tried anything to make my wifi work but always show no interface no wireless. I googled it for help for weeks and all i get was download the iwlwifi things and i already installed in it. i even tried many other thing
and everytime i type ifconfig it just show eth and lo and no wlan0 in it everytime i type airmon-ng there are no chipset interface and ...........thing (forgot) I could find my wireless card name when i type ilg... something i forgot The problem is,i think my linux doesn't reconize the card even i have installed the driver Anything that i can do to make my linux reconize wifi link 5100 agn wireless card?
Im trying to make an ubuntu server box my entrypoint to my networking. Meaning itll function as a server, a firewall, and a gateway. so i already installed dhcp3 and a dns server.
I have 2 ethernet cards in it. So now i wonder, should i the second card into a router's modem/wan port and make the router a switch? or should i plug it into one of the routers lan ports?
I have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)
- Why did I lose internet connectivity?
In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.
- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.
I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works) DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).
how to use a ethernet conenction(Marvell Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller )in ubuntu...my internet requires user name and password ..can u even tell me how to config the user name and password
I installed 10.04 today, and I can't get any connection through the LAN. I've tried some stuff on my own, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It's not a hardware or connection issue, as it works perfectly fine in Windows 7. I haven't had this issue in any previous version of Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter). The weirdest part is I booted from the installation CD as as LiveCD, and everything worked perfectly fine. It only stops working after I actually install it. Here's the results of ifconfig:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:17:31:d8:d5:76 inet6 addr: fe80::217:31ff:fed8:d576/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
i was instelling ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop type HP (nx6110) but the Ethernet and the wireless are not work. i was used the nm-tool on terminal the code is
I just installed 10.04 on a Dell C800 and I've been trying to connect to the internet via Ethernet with no avail. I did some searching and ran lspci -nn and got this:
Since it seems that it will take a while for Linux to get reliable wireless, I've been looking at that Ethernet AC Outlet as a possible solution. I'm hoping it's an all hardware solution (my ethernet works fine). However the vendors, if they list any OS at all, never list Linux.Has anyone had any experience with these?
I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now (~3 years.) I recently installed 10.10 on an HP Mini 1000. The installation went fine, but now I am puzzling over how to connect to the internet. When I plug an ethernet cable into the netbook, the port light lights up, but the system does absolutely nothing. Under the connections menu on the top panel, it just says disconnected. Also, the wireless connection section states that the device is not ready because firmware is not installed. Most solutions I see for problems of this kind are to download the drivers, but I cannot do that because neither connection works.
I have a dual boot netbook (Acer Aspire One D255) with Mint and Ubuntu 10.4. Using Mint, I was able to connect via the ethernet and install all updates including wireless driver.
In Ubuntu 10.4, regardless of what I do, I cannot connect via ethernet cable at home and at work.
How can I locate the right wireless driver? In the past, I have always been able to simply plug in the ethernet cable and get the necessary updates.
i'm a beginner with ubuntu and i installed 11.04 yesterday (so not yet familiar with the new desktop configuration). Also, I have the french version so i'll do my best to translate the terms in english. I have a major problem: i can't connect to internet by ethernet cable or by wireless. The network icon is always empty. It doesn't detect the ethernet cable and the wireless networks around. I've tried different things i found on forums. I'v reinstalled the b43 package and rebooted. At the beginning i was only having problem with the wireless; i could connect via ethernet. But on one forum, a dude suggested the command
In 10.04 I get the following error in the log while connecting to ethernet:

i shut down my ubuntu karmic for a bit. turned it back on after an hour or so and now i have no network connection. i checked all the obvious things like cords etc wife's computer is connected through the same router / modem and no probs here.i even replaced the card in mine.
I have an Asrock A330GC, with onboard ethernet, and an Engenius PCI card for wifi.I installed ubuntu server 9.10 no problems, and it picked up my ethernet in the installation with no difficulties.I couldn't get 9.10 to do what i wanted, so I tried installing 8.4 instead. This however didn't pick up any of the drivers, so i couldn't get online. So i reinstalled 9.10, only to find that no couldn't find network in the installation.Absolutely NOTHING has changed, the ethernet cable still plugged in, and if i plug same cable into my laptop, it works fine.Any ideas people?ifconfig doesn't mention any eth0, just lo, with an ip of 127.0.0.1 and amask of 255.0.0.0 which i'm fairly certain means its dead
