Hardware :: New Desktop Pc - For Fedora Multimedia System ?

Mar 10, 2010

It's time to retire my old Compaq Presario 5000 desktop (AMD Duron 900MHz, 768MB maxed out RAM, 20 GB hard drive, etc.).

I've been running Fedora on it since Core 4, and now on Fedora 12. The machine is old and slow, what can I say?

I'm looking to purchase a new barebones system and was wondering if anyone else has had experience and knowledge regarding a Fedora system for multimedia multitasking, such as video conversions, DVD authoring, DAW recording, etc.

I'm not sure what the best processor is for my needs, since I'm not sure which GNU/Linux software takes advantage of multi-core processors. I basically want to enjoy the advantages of a dual or even quad-core processor when recording, mixing, and mastering music recordings, and when performing video conversions and editing/DVD authoring. Do Linux apps like Ardour, Audacity, and various video editing apps take advantage and perform better/faster on a dual or quad-core processor? Am I just better off saving my money and sticking with a dual-core? I'm aware of the real-time, low-latency kernel patches, but I think a processor that takes advantage of multi-thread code, and some efficient DDR3 memory would help quite a bit, eh?

Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Not Working After System Upgrade

Aug 23, 2015

Yesterday I upgraded the system with:

Code: Select allaptitude full-upgrade

And today when I booted it up again I found the desktop didn't work anymore. There's nothing on the desktop but the wallpaper, all icons have disappeared and I can't click or select anything. The top and bottom panels still work though. This is the list of packages I installed and upgraded according to /var/log/apt/history.log are:

Code: Select allgstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 (1.4.4-2, automatic)
bind9-host:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),
liblwres90:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),
libfontembed1:amd64 (1.0.61-5, 1.0.61-5+deb8u1),

[code]....

I would like to downgrade the package that spoiled the desktop.

I would like to install it to check it out, if it's available.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: System Starts In Low Graphics Mode And Never Shows The Desktop

Jun 5, 2010

I downloaded a linux kernel from linux.org to check what is the kernel is about, i clicked on make_file or make sth .. and in the same session i downloaded a program called login window.

Now the problem is that the system boots ok, it gives me a msg saying that system is running in low graphics mode, when i press ok i get a few options like troubleshootin or restart x or use back up configuration .. and nothing works .. when i press start normally it never stops loading .. i can see the terminal when clicking ctrl + alt + f1,f2 ... but when i press ctrl + alt + f7 or return back to the desktop ubuntu is still loading .. it never stops loading.

And after using ubuntu for a while i really hate windows 7 .. i have it on the system, so is there a way to fix this problem?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting-up System As Remote Desktop To Feed House-wide Audio?

Apr 26, 2010

We're in the final process of building a home, and I had them setup a wiring box where all the coax and cat5 terminates into one closet, which will also house my server. Once we get moved in I'd also like to add speakers in each room to have house-wide music, and ideally I'd like the audio to also run into this box with the master input coming from the server as well.My thought was to setup the server with some basic desktop manager like Fluxbox and use that to drive audio throughout the house, whether it be Pandora, Sirius Radio, or whatever. Since the server will be headless I'll need it setup so we can remote into it from our laptops, but I wasn't sure if VNC or some other RDP variant would work. Ideally we'll need to access a unified desktop so traditional terminal services where each users gets their own desktop might not be ideal

Fedora :: Operating System Freezes After Desktop Loads

Sep 4, 2009

Just recently installed fedora 11 64-bit on my laptop. Everything was fine until today. Everytime I boot up, it crashes right after the desktop loads. Everything is loaded except the area where the running programs are on the taskbar is just one big white block. And a bubble popup says "New SELinux security alert. AVC denial." but everything is frozen. Can't move the cursor or use keyboard. and nothing is happening on the screen. Completly frozen. Anybody have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?

Fedora :: Desktop Effects On System Stopped Working?

Dec 27, 2010

The desktop effects on my system stopped working. They were working fine up to a couple of days ago. Now it says I need to check my configuration for xorg. How do you do that?

Also this appears to have started after another user was using my system and crashed it. They said that it just shut-off with no explanation as to what happened.

lspci -v shows this

HTML Code:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS300M AGP [Radeon Mobility 9100IGP] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff02
Flags: bus master, fast Back2Back, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 16

[Code].....

How do I get back to the systems default drivers?

I do NOT wish to have to reinstall F14 yet again because the system has been very stable since the last install.

Fedora :: Where To Customized *desktop Files Go For System Wide Changes

Jul 4, 2011

making changes to *.desktop files in /usr/share/applications works for all users, but gets overwritten when those packages are updated. You lose all customizations. Placing the customized ones in~/.local/share/applications works, but you have to do that for all users (pain!). So, what folder do they go in for system wide changes, but safe from updates?

Fedora :: Gnome Desktop Panel Went Blank - System Overload

Jan 11, 2011

This morning I update two packages:

Packages Altered:
Updated less-436-6.fc13.i686
Update 436-8.fc13.i686
Updated mingetty-1.08-4.fc12.i686
Update 1.08-6.fc13.i686

I can't explain how, but my desktop panel went blank, and is overloading the system to the point that I cant run other applications. I was able to run a Term session and confirm that the gnome-panel ps is using more than 65% of the cpu and 3.5 on RAM. I create a temp user to verify that is a user environment problem.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sony FP - No Display But Desktop Accessible Via Remote Desktop?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything. However nothing on the TV itself. How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

Ubuntu :: System Resources On Desktop?

May 6, 2010

I don't know if anyone has used Damn Small Linux (dsl), but they've got a cool little system resource monitor builtin to the desktop on the latest version-- Not the old wmnet and wmcpu that they had before, and not the ones the come with ubuntu-- Attached is a screenshot, it's in the upper right corner outlined in red .

Was wondering if anyone knew the app that this was-- I checked their packages list and didn't see it, I don't know if they modified wmnet/wmcpu or something, but I think it'd be cool to have this on my desktop.Especially if it's from DSL, because that is a tiny distro that runs fast, it can't take up too much room.

Hardware :: Recommendations For A New Desktop System?

Jan 19, 2010

I'm probably being a little lazy asking for recommendations here; the LQ HCL and other online resources, while quite good, seem to have TOO many devices listed. I'm looking for systems people have working and are happy with, doing some of the things I wish to do.

I'd like to keep it under a kibidollar (Ki$). I'm planning on doing some development, so while I'll have a couple of Windows versions partitions, and possibly a BSD partition, my main distro of comfort is Kubuntu. Most importantly though, I'd like a Ubuntustudio partition for multimedia creation including audio and video recording/editing/processing.

So I'm looking at recommendations for a 64-bit quad processor (it seems to me the general consensus around Linuxland is something AMD), appropriate motherboard, good soundcard (I've experience with the M-Audio 2496), TV/video capture card, decent graphics card, and, er, what else?

I hadn't yet installed my video drivers but I still have the limited eye candy afforded by default. When I selected desktop effects from the menu I saw the message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:" No issues are listed, and I can select nothing, even after installing proprietary ATI drivers. I created a new account and everything works perfectly in it.
