About a year ago, the motherboard/CPU failed, and i was able to just swap the hard drive into an old computer we had and it worked. (I know i got lucky).Well, it's happened again, and I took the Hard drive from the old system and put it into a new one. I can get the system booted up on the old system, but hardware issue prevent me from using that system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was looking for some way to make 'watch folder' and I found and installed inotify and incron. Explanations were perfect and everything seemed great. So I made test script and it worked as expected.
Now, bash script that was evoked by event by incron consisted this terrible line:
...
mv * /some/folder/
...
which I expected to be run from watched folder, but instead it is run on holy root /
Rest is tragedy: everything was moved to this folder and I can't access any command. Terminal was opened but it did not accept commands. I cd to '/some/folder/bin' then tried to execute command but no luck. I tried also Ctrl+Alt+F1 - same.
What can I do except reboot. Now what? Grub rescue failure prompt. I went in BIOS to make it boot from separate SATA HD with Windows 7, but it somehow isn't listed there. I can't think why. I tried from this Live CD to move folders to correct location, but it's Permission denied
[edit] Re-reading now, in terminal command 'cd' (change directory) was working, but sure not ls, mv and others. Maybe I could have done something, but probably not, network connection was lost, music stopped playing everything was vanishing...
System tray with clock just moved to left, where quick start panel is and I cant see opened windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a couple of commercial NAS boxes and I'm wondering if they (ReadyNas duo, DLink DNS-323) or any other NAS is suitable for having their RAIDed disks moved to a software-based NAS. To be specific, I'm a big fan of the (largely) Debian-based Ubuntu. Can the aforementioned NAS drives be migrated to Ubuntu (e.g. using the mdadm Linux command)?
Secondly, is there any commercial NAS that can be migrated over? Incidentally, here is a link to somebody who succeeded in a migration:URL...My specific scenario I'd like to prepare for, is the eventual (sudden) death of one of the NAS motherboards.
I installed Kubuntu-Desktop on Ubuntu & now my Ubuntu installation is on the 2nd (data)partition! It's hard to believe but I'm looking at it from a live cd and that's what looks like happened.For right now, my main goal is to get Ubuntu back.Should I make the 2nd partition bootable so I have a dual-boot option at startup? Should I make the 2nd partition bootable & not the first? Can I uninstall Kubuntu somehow & have things return to how they were?I thought I was just loading an alternative sassion to Gnome.I thought that the only thing I said yes to was to use the KDE boot manager (or whatever).

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a Thinkpad T61 running Debian 6 that died. I got a T400 and had hoped to save my debian 6 installation by putting the original T61 hard drive into the T400. When I do the machine gets to the Grub menu, then it starts booting and the text starts moving up the screen. Then it goes to a small blinking cursor at the top left corner and stays there.The T61 had an Nvidia card, the T400 has the switchable Intel/ATI. I went in the BIOS and told it to boot using the Intel only but no go. I'm thinking that Grub needs configging to see my new hard drive but I don't know how to do that.

I have been issued a static IP address. I have configured my Linksys server to reserve an address for my Ubuntu Web Server. When I try to get to my web site the connection times out not getting there. I remembered I had to forward some services, ports over to the reserved IP address for the server. View 3 Replies View Relatedubuntu 10.04 Easy Peasy eeepc 900I have messed up my home directory and can not get out of the messI wanted to move the /home to be on the 16gb partition instead of the default which was on the 4gb with the installation. I copied/saved /home to a temporary directory and then moved the contents of /home to the 16gb disk and mounted it on /home At this stage all seemed to be working correctly and applications worked as before. However when I rebooted it can not find my home directory, complains a lot, and if you bypass the messages ends up with a minimal GUI screen which does not respond to anything I tried. It seems that the 16gb disk is not being mounted.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 with KVM and several VMs running the same OS. Everything was running fine and the VMs were using the host's network via bridging. The decision was made to move the server to completely different network. I shut it down, the system was moved and hooked up, and I got it up on the new network pretty easily--just modified /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf. No networking problems at all.
Then I fired up virt-manager, powered up one of the VMs, and made the same kinds of changes. It's not talking beyond the VM server. I can ping the host, but can't ping the gateway. "tcpdump -i eth0" shows plenty of traffic.
I thought I had a handle on Enigmail based on my playing on a test machine. I have run across one perplexing problem on my "production" PC.

I have five email accounts configured in Thunderbird. I configured 2 of the accounts successfully with individual key pairs. I have a key pair for a third account which I created on a test machine, exported to a file (public and secret keys) and imported on the production machine.When I walk through the OpenPGP setup wizard to the point of selecting a key for the email account I do not find the key which I imported. They key does show in the key management tool.
I am running Debian on my eeepc, and whenever I move the display while my computer is on, it often restarts. It turns off at a specific place on the hinge.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 500 GB drive that has a bad "place" at the beginning of the drive. It affected both the MBR and the first 40 GB partition. I just installed a 1 TB (why not?) replacement, but I'm wondering if I can get some future use from the bad drive.
I recall there are programs that will identify and lock out bad sectors on a drive, but I can't remember any specific names. Does Linux have such a critter? Is the MBR in a fixed location on a drive, or could such a utility lock out the bad MBR and allow the creation of a new one in good space?
I've made a LAMP install and used it as a test server connected to my Mac. Good. I managed to get Dreamweaver to work with the server and had access to the home folder from my Mac. The bad part is when I was setting up the permissions for my Mac to connect, I gave it too many rights and set /etc/exports with "no_root_squash" option. This allowed me to change permissions in my home folder from the Mac! That was really cool. The trouble started when I tried to get too clever about managing my F11 test server.
The permission change on the F11 box from the Mac created a new user 501. All the home files had this new user, 501, and a new group 501. I manually edited the /etc/passwd file giving this new PID a meaningful name, rXtian, and set its group to Xtian from the original user. Just to make myself feel really clever, I read in my "F11 Bible" that a "portable desktop" would make it easier to manage log in from different machines. I created a new home directory and CP'n the content from:
/home/Xtian
to
/home/xtiansimonsibm/Xtian (with -rw-r--r-- rXtian Xtian)
What I mean to say is I deleted the old /home/Xtian directory for reasons I do not know. Thats when all the trouble started. I can't login to either user, rXtian or Xtian. I can only get on as root. I tried to start over by creating a third user with ADDUSER including the base set of user files. I renamed home/xtiansimonsibm/rXtian. I can't log in to either. I used PASSWD command changing Xtian and rXtian's loginpass, but neither password has taken. I still have the test server working, but I can't login to the home folder anymore. What can I do? Any tutorial or checklist for repairinig the user permissions, passwords?
I was trying to install a program and then I tried to mv comman (which I probably did wrong) but to make it short I am pretty sure I deleted the directory. I made another Downloads directory using mkdir but whenever I download anything now I have no idea where it goes.

Although I've been dabbling for a while I'm somewhat of a newbie so bear with me: Rather than rebuild my Hardy Server due to root being full, I followed suggestions to create another logical volume on the volume group and put root there. I must have missed some fundamental step. Although the partition appears to be functional, the defined space isn't visible and I am stumped:

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething seems to be wrong with the form redraw. When I open a movie in movieplayer, it looks Ok until I try to resize the window or move it. Then it draws crazy, repeats elements in the form, and kills the movie image. You can still hear it, but it's black. Something is up with the software that draws apps on the screen. Have you seen this or have an idea what might be going on?
