Ubuntu :: Files Moved To Trash Then Deleted Completely

Apr 19, 2011

If I move a file to the trash,I can restore it later.But if I empty the trash,I'll be warned that I cannot recover the files if I proceed.Is this really true or are there Linux applications for recovering files deleted from the trash?Uhm...are the files deleted completely and unrecoverably or are there any traces left behind?

Fedora :: GThumb Image Viewer Delete - Files Moved To Trash

Mar 4, 2010

When I am deleting pictures using gThumb image viewer it asks "The selected images will be moved to Trash, are you sure?" And if I press "yes" button - it moves message to ~/.Trash, can it be configured to move them into "real" trash? I have created symbolic link and it solved part of my problems, but files "restore" option is unavailable to files which were moved in to trash by this method.

Fedora :: Trash Does Not Show My Files/folders I Moved From NTFS Windows Drive

May 25, 2011

I am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.

(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:

Code:

(9) But still I can't see the folders in the Trash
(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.

General :: Moved File Partitions - File System Check Failed On Fedora, Windows Will Not Boot

Dec 16, 2009

my partitioning layout was as follows

Vista Recovery
Windows 7
GRUB
Extended
-->Fedora 12 (ext4)

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

I'm afraid that I may have deleted the files, or have moved them to another user or someplace on the drive I can't see.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Move File To Trash / Solution For This?

May 13, 2011

This started happening last week. Whenever I try to delete a file that is not in my /home directory I get the message:

Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately.

I have found a couple threads in the forums about this issue, but it has always been associated with windows or samba shares.

This is happening on my computer, not on a shared folder or through samba. Its a little frustrating to say the least.

I have a problem with a couple of folders in the Trash. If I click on the Trash icon, 2 foldersare there, and when I try to delete them, it just says "Failed to delete the item from the trash"

But when I go to .local/share/Trash there are no files there! Anyway, I tried using the command "sudo rm -rf .local/share/Trash", it shows no error, but the files continue when I click in the trash icon.

Programming :: Bash File Names Different Than Openbox Trash

Feb 14, 2011

Im writing my first bash script. Its function is to move files to the trash can and write a log file in the same format that the system does to allow for file restoration. The problem is that in bash, everything works fine, but in the OpenBox window session, the files are named after the source directory, not the original name. Heres the script:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# trash - Script to move file or folder to the trash can and create a log file
##### Functions #####
err_output () # Writes error message {
echo "$0: cannot stat `$1': No such file or directory"
echo "USAGE: $0 SOURCE DEST"
exit 1 } >&2

write_log_numbered ()
# Writes log entry for numbered files {
echo "[Trash Info]" > $HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/${FILE}.$max.trashinfo
echo "Path="$PWD >> $HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/${FILE}.$max.trashinfo
echo "DeletionDate="`date "+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S"` >> $HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/${FILE}.$max.trashinfo
}

write_log_unique () # Writes log entry for unique files {
echo "[Trash Info]" > $HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/${FILE}.trashinfo
echo "Path="$PWD >> $HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/${FILE}.trashinfo
echo "DeletionDate="`date "+%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S"` >> $HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/${FILE}.trashinfo
} make_paths () # Makes necessary folders {
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/Trash
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/Trash/files
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/Trash/info
}

##### Main #####
make_paths
SOURCE="$1"
DEST=$(dirname ~/.local/share/Trash/files/filename)
[ -e "$SOURCE" ] || err_output "$SOURCE"
[ -d "$DEST" ] || err_output "$DEST"
FILE="$(basename "$SOURCE")"

if [ -e "${DEST}/${FILE}" ]; then
max=0 DIR="$(pwd)" cd "$DEST"
shopt -s nullglob for backup in "${FILE}."; do
nr=${backup#${FILE}.}
if [[ "$nr" =~ ^[0-9]+$ ]]; then
if (( nr>max )); then
max="$nr" fi
fi
done
cd "$DIR"
max=$(( max + 1 ))
write_log_numbered
mv -- "$SOURCE" "${DEST}/${FILE}.$max"
else
write_log_unique
mv -- "$SOURCE" "$DEST/${FILE}"
fi

So I run the script with the test file "Junk". In bash, it moves over and its named correctly.
Code:
~/.local/share/Trash/files$ ls
file file.1 Files Files.1 Junk
The log file is also named correctly

Code:
~/.local/share/Trash/info$ ls
file.1.trashinfo Files.1.trashinfo Files.trashinfo file.trashinfo Junk.trashinfo

But, when I go to view the trash can in the file manager in Openbox, the file is called "Testing" which is the name of the source directory. However, if I go to the trashcan via its full path (going to .local/, then share/) all the files are named correctly. Whats going on here? Is there some way to get the trash can to read the correct file name?

I think this function (Move to Trash) was working fine this morning. What it happened?... Maybe "Move to Trash" files in a pen drive was the cause of the problem.

I have configured my Linksys server to reserve an address for my Ubuntu Web Server. When I try to get to my web site the connection times out not getting there. I remembered I had to forward some services, ports over to the reserved IP address for the server. I can't for the life of me remember the ports I forwarded. how to get this forwarding done. However when I rebooted it can not find my home directory, complains a lot, and if you bypass the messages ends up with a minimal GUI screen which does not respond to anything I tried. It seems that the 16gb disk is not being mounted.

Ubuntu :: Moved A VM Server Now VMs Can't Talk

Jun 18, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 with KVM and several VMs running the same OS. Everything was running fine and the VMs were using the host's network via bridging. The decision was made to move the server to completely different network. I shut it down, the system was moved and hooked up, and I got it up on the new network pretty easily--just modified /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf. No networking problems at all.

Then I fired up virt-manager, powered up one of the VMs, and made the same kinds of changes. It's not talking beyond the VM server. I can ping the host, but can't ping the gateway. "tcpdump -i eth0" shows plenty of traffic.
