Let's say a guy wanted to construct a time capsule. I'm referring to one of those boxes or containers that you drop in the ground, and decades later you (or someone else) digs it up to learn things from that time. And let's say you wanted to drop several Gigabytes worth of digital data in that capsule. What kind of storage media would you put it on? CD-ROM? DVD-ROM? USB stick? SATA drive? Magnetic Tape?
View 14 Repliesi have a spare computer and 4 hds and was planning to make this computer a storage server with a media place aswell... i do have some linux knowledge but never used it for this and am not sure how good it will be initially the media files are in an HD with ntfs format which i want to keep as is... but i was wondering what options i had to make a media folder over network where i could browse and watch from any computer in my network ? is it samba my only options or is there a more media like solution for this ? There will aswell other features i was planning to use on it which made me think of linux, for example, svn server, websever with mysql to testing my applications, connection manager, all these i am sure on how to make and setup... but i am not very familiar with samba hence i am not sure if it is the best options for file sharing aswell as media sharing and/or my only option.i also heard that ntfs might be trouble some for linux in some cases
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm planning on setting up a home file server. I was wondering what platform would be recommended for something like this. The server would be used mainly for media storage which would be shared between an HTPC and a couple desktops and laptops. I was thinking of just getting whatever motherboard had the most SATA headers on it (which currently seems to be something P55-based) and setting up a RAID5 fakeraid with some 1.5 or 2TB drives and the OS in RAID1 with whatever drives I have laying around. It there anything flawed with this approach? P55 boards with 10 SATA headers are currently upwards of $200, which is kind of pricey. Is there a more economical route that I should consider? Also, are there any known problems with setting up a fakeraid like this using certain motherboard's SATA controllers?

I installed gparted on live operating system and when i rebooted gparted was not installed.
So recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?
What device is more durable, long-lived? As far as I know - HDD is still better about it. What do you guys think/know?

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.
I'm interested in buying a new hardware for my company. The old server (now 10 years old) should be replaced with a new one. Till now, I was looking on different hardware suppliers, boards and different other places. I found a Tyan board [URL]. The hardware spec is quite interesting and the board would fullfill our claims.

I am trying to do the cluster storage with the Rock Cluster storage operating system . I have install the rock cluster on the main server . and I want to connect the client with the PXE boot . when I starting the client then it boot from the PXE boot into the mode of compute node. but it ask the where is to be stored the I have give the path..then server says that not able to find the directory path.
Steps:-
1) insert-ethers
2) client is started with the PXE boot.
3) it detects the dhcp .
4) At last it demand where is to be started by cd-rom, harddisk ,nfs etc.
then I started with the nfs and I have given the lanIp of server.and server is detecting the client but client is not finding the filesystem directory. into export partition directory but it is not taking path.
PATH:-
/export/rock/install it is not finding this path then it is not able to start the o/s from PXE boot..Is there any solution and manual of rock or anyother solution then u can reply to me...
I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.
I recently put Linux back on my laptop (Vector) and I am trying to get any of the media players on it to recognize and play the music on my desktop, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate with WMP streaming music over my wireless network. I was wondering if this can be done, or if these features have yet, if ever, to be implemented.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.
I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.
Can I use my USB to act as a RAM storage? [URL]... I doubt if there will be significant increase in performance..Otherwise RAM manufacturers will be out of business! morever I think Linux already uses this through SWAP. I have very poor RAM (512 MB) , Some KDE distros specify >=1 GB....How can I run these smoothly? I have ample HDD space. By increasing SWAP , can I enhance performance? Te best would be to buy a RAM chip but mine is rather old 512 MB (DDR1). It is not available and even if it is there seems to be costlier than DDR2 and DDR3.

I used Dells open manage software to rebuild the RAID which was successful although I cannot see the additional storage when I look on the system. Basically how do I get Linux to show the new storage and then add it to an existing partition.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of duplicating all the data from my existing filesystems to a new storage solution. I know it is not recommended to do so but this will be a *lot* faster then having to reinstall and reconfiguring the system from scratch...I've synchronized the filesystems using rsync, used the following command line for that:

To make sure all data is mirrored properly, the next step is to boot into a live system and rerun rsync to copy any previously locked/altered files to the new storage. After moving this, I know I have to edit /etc/fstab on the new storage to make it match the proper UID for the drives. I also have to update grub and install grub into MBR of the new storage.

I would like to know a way to disable the usb storage capability of the clients computers on a LAN, running opensuse 11.2.

I'm now having to access a lot of data on a portable hard drive on a regular basis. The drive needs to be used with three different Windows systems, three Ubuntu machines and two slackware units. The data is backed up once per week.
I have been using Ext2IFS to access the data (stored on Ext3) from Windows but keep having problems. Obviously Ubuntu and Slack have no trouble reading or writing to the drive. Additionally, some sensitive data will be put onto the drive shortly and I would like to encrypt it.
What is the best solution here? Is NTFS reliable enough and is data access and writing reliable enough from Linux? Can I encrypt NTFS and still leave it accessible by Linux? What is the best software to encrypt the drive with (if I can) that is accessible by both Windows and Linux?
I created a dual boot on my computer with windows vista and ubuntu using the wubi ubuntu installer for windows, and my ubuntu boot is limited to 15gb of hard drive space. My hard drive in actuality has about 150gb left on it. How do I expand the amount of storage ubuntu is allowed to use?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am getting seriously pissed off and dissappointed at the way things are handled here i bought some music from rhythmbox and after a long journey in disconnections and reconnections i finally got the files in my U1 storage ( rhythmbox still says "Transfering to ur U1 storage" in mydownloads ) now how am i supposed to download all this files??? i can't download an entire folder in web browser ( i can only do one file at a time ) and i am not able to find another way through rhythmbox or anywhere else after reading one hour of irrelevant tutorials and faqs ( i have a headahe at this time, so even if there was a way i probably would not understand it :D )
is there a way or do i just have to suffer downloading all my files one by one ???? and btw: i had to do all this on a virtual machine becuz noscript got in the way of adding my pc to the account ( w/ allowing all the servers it still blocked something) and rhythmbox crashed somewhere in the process and after restarting my pc, it kept getting stock when pressed the check out button any way that's not important i actually prefer it this way to have one dedicated virtual machine for U1 music
My friend bought a new PC, and he's duel booting Ubuntu 10.04LTS and Windows 7 Ultimate. At first I tried partitioning the hardrive using fdisk in Ubuntu, but it couldn't find hda. After looking in /dev/, there wasn't hda, or any sd* devices. I looked in gparted and used the installer afterwards and both came up with nil. I installed Windows, updated the BIOS using the utility that came with the mobo, and tried seeing if Ubuntu could detect my hardrive and it couldn't. I even turned ACPI off when booting and that didn't work either.
The motherboard is a new Gigabit with 3 PCIe slots and a USB3.0.
Can I auto-mount my storage HDD? If so how?
