Hardware :: Minimal Upgrade Of An Old PC Running VectorLinux 6.0 Light

Nov 21, 2010

I wanted to do a minimal upgrade to my daughter's old PC (Pentium III, 500 MHz, 256 MB RAM), running VectorLinux 6.0 Light (it's fast!) and Windows 98 SE, in dual boot. I read that you can install a mini ITX motherboard on an ATX case, so, I thought I could install one of them in it: "Asus AT5IONT-I" (1.8GHz Atom D525 dual core cpu, ION GPU). Can you let me know what you think about it? Besides, does that motherboard (and associated CPU and GPU) work wll with Linux? Best Regards

Networking :: Netgear WGR614v10 Not Detecting VectorLinux?

Dec 12, 2010

I have a bought a Netgear Wireless N-150 router WGR614v10. I am using my net connection via PPPoE wired on a Win 7 machine and the connection was flawless the MAC address on the router is of the Win 7 machine.

My problem is that I have an old machine PIII 600Mhz 398MB SD Ram on VectorLinux 6.0....I tried connecting the internet directly with PPPoE the connection worked fine and I could connect through the net...but now after installing the router the machine is not detected by the router(Wired). only my Win 7 (Wired) machine and my android phone (wireless) is shown in attached devices and the VectorLinux machine is not shown....

The lan card light is on on the VectorLinux machine.

typed commands like ifconfig -a, lsmod, lspci got the reading:

root:# ifconfig -a

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade - Screen Goes Dark / Monitor Light Flashing?

May 4, 2011

Despite being warned from a friend of mine who works for Intel that the new version of Ubuntu 11.04 sucked? I upgraded from 10.10 which worked perfectly fine and did everything that I wanted it to except work with my COBY MP3 player which is what I hoped 11.04 would do. It all worked great until I rebooted. I previously had the main screen on the left where all of the menus are and the right screen was the 2nd monitor.

Once it rebooted it let me login and loaded the desktop but the main screen is now on the right with that stupid application bar going up the side, all of my folders, etc. are all there but NOTHING is clickable, even the icons up in the right corner where you logout, etc. will not do anything other than highlight that you have clicked on them, the hard drive light flickers for a few moments then nothing.

Also the left hand screen is completely blank unless I move the mouse cursor through it. If I just leave the computer sitting there eventually the screens go dark and the monitor lights start flashing like it is supposed to but if I wiggle the mouse the screens come back on and the mouse is there but there is no login prompt to let me log back in. Pardon my French but this OS is a piece of <bleep> and sucks just like I was told.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A New Server Package And Leave Minimal Minimal?

Feb 17, 2010

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:

Ubuntu Installation :: Manually Upgrade Minimal-Install To Standard Desktop

Apr 29, 2010

Due to some CD burning/reading problems with the laptop I'm installing to, the only install disk that I have been able to get to work is a MinimalCD disk.Unfortunately this only works if I don't ask it to install any extras at all, so I can install Ubuntu, but it is bare bones, and boots to a shell, no GUI or anything like that. What packages do I need to apt-get to bring this minimal install up to the standard Ubuntu install? Does anyone have a list of packages, or a site that will tell me which packages to install?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 To 11.04 Upgrade Fails With "ubuntu-minimal" Cannot Be Found Error

May 6, 2011

I've seen this happening to others, but can't find the original bug report I saw. From what I can tell I'm getting the error because I am using a local mirror, as others have successfully updated using "official" mirrors.

What would cause the installer to differentiate between a local and an official mirror? I'm pulling everything anl.gov has for Lucid, Maverick, and Natty, and had no problems using the local mirror to dist-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10.

The exact error is:

Code:
After your package information was updated the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore.

This indicates a serious error, please report this bug against the 'update- anager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. main.log from /var/log/dist-upgrade:

Code:
2011-05-06 10:15:06,986 DEBUG running doUpdate() (showErrors=True)

Ubuntu :: Running Slow After Natty Upgrade?

May 6, 2011

Since my upgrade to 11.04, ubuntu has been running real slow. When I click on the firefox icon on the side bar, it literally takes over 3 seconds to start opening up. And the same thing goes for folders. Is there something I need to tweak to fix this? And my computer is pretty fast on its own, vista runs very fast on it if that says something.

Ubuntu :: Getting A Light OS For Old Laptop?

I have the question if anyone here has a suggestion for a Linux-based operating system I can use to run on an old laptop, connected to an external monitor with a keyboard and a mouse (so that it kinda looks like a pc, i'm saving money okay ). The specs for the laptop are:
Acer Aspire, 512 mib RAM, 16 mib Graphical Card, AMD Sempron processor, 30 GIG storage. I have Ubuntu 9.04 running on it, but I find it a bit too slow, it takes at least 20 seconds before google chrome (which is faster than firefox, and firefox takes at least 40 seconds to start up) will start up, as well as openoffice.I just need to do the following things on this laptop:

- browse the webs
- make text documents
- be able to view flash
- be able to play video's and mp3

Fedora :: Scanner Light Goes Off After Each Scan

Apr 15, 2011

I'm using a scanner with Fedora. However, linux does something that is undesirable; It turns off the scanner light, everytime it does a scan, which the HP software, which comes for windows, doesn't do. The result? The light never warms up enough and all the images come with a blue tone on them. Only after using the scanner a few times, the light warms up enough and the images start getting their true colour. The question is, can I somehow force the light to stay on, even during scans, like it happens when I am using Windows? Or not? Anyone has ideas?

Ubuntu :: Getting Very Light Colored Text

Jan 5, 2010

I have an annoying text color problem. I don't know what to change to fix it. I have played around with System->Preferences->Appearance to no avail. Here is the problem: I am getting very light colored text so only the currently selected item is readable. The funny thing is that in Nautilus, Firefox, Chrome, Amarok, etc.. it's fine. It seems to be in only some programs in boxes with selectable line items, but also in the area that displays status updates in FileZilla. So I'm not sure how to pinpoint the problem.

Ubuntu :: Temporary Hangs With HDD Light On?

May 4, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for almost a year now in WUBI with WinXP. I'm a relative noob with Linux, though always eager to learn more. Lately, I have noticed that every now and then Ubuntu stops working for about 30 seconds or so with the hard disk light solidly on. Clicking anywhere does nothing until it wakes up and then remembers all my previous clicks.

When it doesn't do this, it works wonderfully. I can't figure out what sets it off. And some days it does it annoyingly often and other days not at all or rarely. I checked the log files and this is a sample of some troubled times:

Code:
May 2 19:32:17 ubuntu kernel: [ 909.000011] ata1: lost interrupt (Status 0x58)

I could just dump abrt since it's hardly a necessity, but I'm inclined not to as I think it's a good idea which could potentially be of great benefit to us all.
