Software :: Light CD Burner App With Small Size And Few Dependencies?

I've created a custom pclinunx os minime remaster for a friend. The only thing it lacks is a CD burning program. The problem is that I'm on dialup and can't use synaptic to install K3b. I don't know if I have the dev tools needed to compile it. Can you recommend me a light CD burner app with small size and few dependencies?

Ubuntu Installation :: SD Drive's Light Doesn't Turn Off

Oct 11, 2010

i used WUBI to put Ubuntu on an SD card. i ran it off that for a while, and keeping my Vista. then i tried upgrading to to 10.10. there was even a special installer for GRUB in the process.

that's when the problem started. after my comp finished the upgrade, it restarted. but this time, in grub rescue. i tried some of the codes in the wiki, but everything came up unknown command. then someone in the chat told me to use a Live CD and a Super GRUB2 cd.

the LiveCD booted to a screen with a picture of a "keyboard=person with a circle around it". then after a few minutes of just that, lines of text reading:EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3567 EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3577 (and more with consecutive numbers) the Super GRUB2 cd let me get the OS list i usually get from starting up. only Vista would start up without problem. Ubuntu had.. a problem i cant recall right now.

i redid the Live CD, and im back in Ubuntu. i tried the ways of reinstalling GRUB2, as advised by the chats, but nothing seemed to work as described in the reinstallation section of this.

and that is where i stand right now. also, my SD drive's light doesn't turn off now, even when there is no card in it. im kind of worried that when GRUB installed at the 10.10 upgrade, it made that a partisan.

Fedora Hardware :: LCD Screen Flickers / Suspend The System Once For The Flickering To Stop?

Jul 13, 2010

I have this situation: I installed F13 on my laptop having an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator. The screen of my laptop was flickering and i did a 'yum update'. The flickering didn't stop, but after suspending the system once, the flickering stops and everything is fine. Now after each reboot i have to suspend the system once for the flickering to stop. Please help.

After discussing in #fedora in freenode, some people asked for these (i'm posting in case you need them too):

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade - Screen Goes Dark / Monitor Light Flashing?

May 4, 2011

Despite being warned from a friend of mine who works for Intel that the new version of Ubuntu 11.04 sucked? I upgraded from 10.10 which worked perfectly fine and did everything that I wanted it to except work with my COBY MP3 player which is what I hoped 11.04 would do. It all worked great until I rebooted. I previously had the main screen on the left where all of the menus are and the right screen was the 2nd monitor.

Once it rebooted it let me login and loaded the desktop but the main screen is now on the right with that stupid application bar going up the side, all of my folders, etc. are all there but NOTHING is clickable, even the icons up in the right corner where you logout, etc. will not do anything other than highlight that you have clicked on them, the hard drive light flickers for a few moments then nothing.

Also the left hand screen is completely blank unless I move the mouse cursor through it. If I just leave the computer sitting there eventually the screens go dark and the monitor lights start flashing like it is supposed to but if I wiggle the mouse the screens come back on and the mouse is there but there is no login prompt to let me log back in. Pardon my French but this OS is a piece of <bleep> and sucks just like I was told.

Fedora Installation :: F12 Won't Boot On LVM/RAID System After Upgrade

Dec 9, 2009

I upgraded from F10 to F12 using preupgrade. The upgrade itself completed with no errors, but I'm unable to boot afterward.

Symptoms:...Grub starts, the initramfs loads, and the system begins to boot. After a few seconds I get error messages for buffer i/o errors on blocks 0-3 on certain dm devices (usually dm0 and dm2, but I can't get a shell to figure out what those are). An error appears from device-mapper that it couldn't read an LVM snapshot's metadata. I get the message to press "I" for interactive startup. UDEV loads and the system tries to mount all filesystems. Errors appear stating that it couldn't mount various LVM partitions. Startup fails due to the mount failure, the system reboots, and the steps repeat.

Troubleshooting done:...I have tried to run preupgrade again (the entry is still in my grub.conf file). The upgrade environment boots, but it fails to find the LVM devices and gives me a question to name my machine just like for a fresh install. I also tried booting from the full install DVD, but I get the same effect. Suspecting that the XFS drivers weren't being included, I have run dracut to create a new initramfs, making sure the XFS module was included. I have loaded the preupgrade environment and stopped at the initial GUI splash screen to get to a shell prompt. From there I can successfully assemble the raid arrays, activate the volume group, and mount all volumes -- all my data is still intact (yay!). I've run lvdisplay to check the LVM volumes, and most (all?) appear to have different UUIDs than what was in /etc/fstab before the upgrade -- not sure if preupgrade or a new LVM package somehow changed the UUIDs. I have modified my root partition's /etc/fstab to try calling the LVM volumes by name instead of UUID, but the problem persists (I also make sure to update the initramfs as well). From the device-mapper and I/O errors above, I suspect that either RAID or LVM aren't starting up properly, especially since prior OS upgrades had problems recognizing RAID/LVM combinations (it happened so regularly that I wrote a script so I could do a mkinitrd with the proper options running under SystemRescueCD with each upgrade).

I have tried booting with combinations of the rootfstype, rdinfo, rdshell, and rdinitdebug parameters, but the error happens so early in the startup process that the messages quickly scroll by and I just end up rebooting.

System details:4 1-TB drives set up in two RAID 1 pairs. FAT32 /boot partition RAIDed on the first drive pair. Two LVM partitions -- one RAIDed on the second drive pair and one on the remainder of the first drive pair. Root and other filesystems are in LVM; most (including /) are formatted in XFS.

I've made some progress in diagnosing the issue. The failure is happening because the third RAID array (md2) isn't being assembled at startup. That array contains the second physical volume in the LVM volume group, so if it doesn't start then several mount points can't be found.

The RAID array is listed in my /etc/mdadm.conf file and identified by its UUID but the Fedora 12 installer won't detect it by default. Booting the DVD in rescue mode does allow the filesystems to be detected and mounted, but the RAID device is set to be /dev/md127 instead of /dev/md2.

The arrays are on an MSI P35 motherboard (Intel ICH9R SATA chipset) but I'm using LInux software RAID. The motherboard is configured for AHCI only. This all worked correctly in Fedora 10.

Fedora Installation :: F12 (Install Or Upgrade Existing System) Sony Vaio

Jun 22, 2010

I've had such good luck with Fedora (and this Forum), I'm attempting to put F12 on wife's brand new Sony Vaio, a VPCEB11FM, a 64bit system. I downloaded the Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso, made sure it was ok with sha256.exe, then burned the image to DVD. Booted it up and let it default to "install or upgrade an existing system". It dead-ended in a dark blue or black screen. I re-started and examined the other options. Thought I'd try the one that says: "Install system with basic video driver". Got all the way through to where it got ready to start downloading files. Can't get past that point because it attempts to get to the Internet using the Sony's wireless card! Why would it try the wireless when there's a wired NIC card in this PC that requires no special driver etc. How to proceed from here?

Ubuntu :: System Upgrade Woes - Wipe Drive?

Apr 29, 2011

I have a real love/hate relationship with Ubuntu. A few weeks back my Windows XP crashed and I had to take it to a tech to have my drive wiped and the operating system reinstalled. Just when I got XP back up and working perfectly someone told me to try Ubuntu. I made the Ubuntu 10.10 boot installation disc and installed it. Although I partitioned the drive during the install I was never able to reboot to Windows and thus lost all the files and programs I had just finished installing.

Okay. long story short: I got used to running Ubuntu and started to like it. Then this morning I was prompted to upgrade to Natty 11.04. After the install I got a message about being low on utilities and to boot in the Ubuntu Classic mode, which I was not able to do.

So now my machine is virtually non-functional. It won't run any programs but sometimes if I'm lucky I can get the computer to shut off without pulling the plug from the wall. I think I just need to wipe the drive and start over. Can someone tell me how to do this using DOS without having to make another long trip to my tech? Luckily I have a Windows XP laptop to use to access this forum.

General :: Debian System Drive Upgrade: Copy Filesystems From MBR Partitions To GPT?

Jan 23, 2010

My home server runs Debian Lenny, and I'm about to upgrade the system drive to a larger drive. In the process, I want to take the opportunity to reorganize the partitions and resize them. For learning purposes, I'm planning to migrate from an MBR partition table to GPT.Because of those two changes, I can't just run "dd if=/old/drive of=/new/drive" (well, not without lots more work afterwards). I could use the debootstrap process to get a fresh installation on the new system drive, but I used that technique during the last system upgrade and it's probably overkill for this. Can I just copy the partitions from the old drive to the new? Will "dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/hdb2" work, assuming /dev/hdb2 is larger than /dev/hda1? (If so, the filesystem can be resized to take advantage of the new larger partition, right?)Would parted (or gparted) be a better tool for copying the contents of the partitions?

Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Freezing - Indicator Light Stays Solid Color

Jun 11, 2010

I use ubuntu on about 3 machines, have installed it many times, and run it virtually with software and been using Ubuntu and many other distros for about 8 months now. I am still pretty much a noob and when it comes to CLI I have no clue and need it all spelled out for me. So I'll cut to the problem. My problem is that about every 10-15 minutes my netbook (Samsung N130 1.6ghz atom 2GB 800mhz RAM 160GB HDD and 128mb GMA GPU). All of my other ubuntu or any other linux distro for that matter do not have this problem I am about to explain.

So it gives me a false signal that the HDD is in use. Like an example... I'll be browsing a web page and all of a sudden it stops... I'm not running anything else or downloading anything internet is there and just stops. I can move the mouse and when I hover over objects it highlights but a click is unresponsive. And I have noticed everytime it does this it lasts about 20 seconds and the HDD indicator light stays a solid color but when I listen the HDD is it's normal sound (no ripping of data or anything).

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Without A CD Burner?

Sep 15, 2010

It's been a while since I hosed my system, and I finally stopped procrastinating to backup, format, and reinstall. The latest disc I have available is 9.10, and getting new ones is a feat now that Canonical won't mail them to me. So I installed 9.10 and immediately upgraded to 10.04; somewhere in there it asked me where to installed GRUB and I told it sda1 but not sda, which was apparently a mistake.

I got an error about "grub_puts_" being undefined and used this guide per a relevant thread. I rebooted and got through GRUB, but now all that comes up is the purple background and my cursor; the mouse doesn't move, not that there's anything for it to click anyway. I went on #ubuntu IRC and was advised to do a clean install rather than an upgrade.

Of course I can just stay with 9.10 but would prefer the latest (of course it's about to be obsolete anyway...). I have also heard that it's possible to install to a USB drive; I'm guessing that likewise requires a CD? I guess what I'm wondering is whether I can use a 9.10 install to download and install 10.04 directly to a different device? Finding someone who has a CD burner is a real hassle.
