Hardware :: Linksys WMP54G Slow - Jumpy Signal Strength

Mar 3, 2010

I've got a Linksys WMP54G Pci card of some kind that's being reported as a Ralink rt2500 pci, but it is very slow (50k/s cap) and has jumpy signal strength (goes between 70% and 10% every second or so, while the router is in the same room). It is just this pc, as I'm using my laptop fine right now with no such condition. I am running basically a fresh version of Slackware 12.2, so it's kernel version 2.6.27.7. I have used this with Slackware 13 and there was absolutely no issue, so I think it may be a wrong or outdated driver, but building kernel modules and updating whatever module it should be is not something that I'm very good at.

Ubuntu Networking :: Linksys WMP54G Not Connecting To Wireless

Nov 12, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and everything seems to be working fine, but I can't seem to connect to my wireless network. I am able to see the wireless networks nearby, so I'm guessing that means the drivers are fine and the hardware is working. When I try to connect, I am seeing the wireless networks of my neighbors, but mine isn't showing. So I manually enter the information in and try to connect, but it doesn't seem to connect. I enter the WEP key and it attempts, then the WEP key screen pops up again, as if I entered the key incorrectly. I've tried many times and I'm 100% certain my key is correct. By the way, the chipset is: Ralink RT61
Which means it really should just work out of the box.

Hardware :: How To Get Linksys WMP54G Card Running In FC12

Feb 12, 2010

Trying to get Linksys WMP54G (RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI) card running in FC12 with WPA. The drivers are included in the distro. No luck with network manager.
[root@nitefall ~]# lspci -v | grep -i network
01:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI .....

When I try to do ifup wlan0 I get:
[root@nitefall ~]# ifup wlan0
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
Determining IP information for wlan0...
<hangs there for a while>

I get the above error with or without encryption enabled at the AP. I've been over hundreds of posts on dozens of pages and nothing has worked. I have a dual-boot and the card works perfectly in Windows, so it's not a hardware issue.

Fedora Networking :: Setting Up Linksys WMP54G Wireless Card

Jun 18, 2009

I just installed Fedora again, after a long absence. I have been using XP. I am having issues setting up my wireless card Linksys WMP54G. For some reason the card has been recognized, and the interface is there. But I have tried every walk-trough known to Google, and it still won't work. I have been using the GUI tools, but they don't work. I have also been using the command line walk through, and they aren't working either. Does anyone know which files I need to set and what the process would be?

Hardware :: See The Signal Strength And Type Of Connection (2G/3G) Using A Usb Modem?

Nov 12, 2010

I managed to connect to the internet using wvdial, however I am getting hardly exciting download speeds around 50 kB/s. I was really hoping to get somewhere around 150 - 300 kB/s. Hence my question: how can I "debug" the connection in Linux, i.e. what is the signal strength and if it managed to connect using 3G or only GSM.

I am using Huawei e272 usb modem (branded Vodafone, I am connecting to Virgin though). My wvdial.conf file:

Code:
[Dialer Defaults]
Phone = *99***1#
Username = user
Password = " "
Stupid Mode = 1

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Doesn't Work Below 50% Signal Strength?

Feb 6, 2011

I have a WUSB54GC v.1 wireless USB adapter which I use to connect to my home network. For some reason, over time my reception has been getting worse. I'm not sure if this is due to the router or the adapter. In addition, when the signal strength dips below 50%, I can no longer receive email or browse the web. This is only a problem with Ubuntu - when I had WinXP installed, I could access the internet mostly regardless of the signal strength.

I started a year ago with the adapter plugged directly into the computer. After a while I found it necessary to use an extension cord to place the adapter outside my room, closer to the router. A while later it was time for another extension cord, and now my reception has gotten worse again, but I can't extend it any further.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Kdenlive Being Jumpy And Slow

Aug 23, 2010

I have a query about Kdenlive, when putting avi. Files with audio files like wma. It chugs hard and doesn't play out a smooth rendition of the two. I only went to Ubuntu because I thought windows movie maker was a joke in regards to its freezes. I have tryed a few other video editing apps but as far as I can see Kdenlive has all the basics I need except the smooth file use. I suppose would be: does my 2gb RAM and 64 AMD 4000+ fit a video editing standard? What is the best video editing software out there on ubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can A Linksys WRT54G Receive / Repeat Wireless Signal

Feb 19, 2011

Situation is a cable modem and a Belkin F5D8235 Wireless-N router (and a computer) are at one end of the property. Approx 150-200 ft away I want to put 3 desktop computers none of which have a wireless card or device. I DO have a Linksys WRT54G I'm not using.I want to hardwire the 3 desktop computers to a switch that is hard wired to the Linksys. Putting a wireless card in one of the 3 computers is not practical because of physical obstructions (a lot of cabinetry, furniture, walls) that the Linksys (which can be at the window) would not have to deal with.

Is it possible for the Linksys to 'receive' the wireless signal from the Belkin so the 3 desktops can share the internet? If not, what could I put in the window to 'receive' or 'repeat' the wireless signal?I know this isn't exactly a Ubuntu question, except that 2 of the 3 computers are 64bit Lucid.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow/intermittent Connection On Linksys Wmp600n - Wubi 10.10

Oct 28, 2010

i have just installed 10.10 under wubi, first time trying to use this network card under ubuntu. works fine on XP where it connects with good signal strength to a zyxel p-600 b/g router (my 3 other machines also connect fine to this router)

i am using WPA2, it takes 30secs to 1min to connect in the first place, then runs slowly and with intermittent disconnects, reports good signal strength in network manager.

i have been fortunate enough to have 3 machines that run ubuntu flawlessly out of the box..

Fedora Networking :: WMP54G PCI Card Works With FC9 But Not After Upgrade

Jan 24, 2009

I have a now pretty old PC, I think it is 400 Mhz Pentium II, on which I installed a Linksys WMP54G 802.11g PCI card, and on which I wanted to run Fedora 10, but I can't get the wlan card working. As I had a vague memory of having it seen working before, I reverted to Fedora 9, and it worked, at least before I made an update of it. So I took a closer look at it, and besides finding out that there is nothing wrong with my PC and the WLAN card, I also found some oddities. My feeling is that the configuration settings in Network Configuration window seems a bit unrelated to the behavior of the system. Here is a summary of what I found:

1) The WMP54G/RaLink does neither work rightly after installation of Fedora-10-i386, and nor after updating it.
2) The WMP54G/RaLink device worked rightly after installation of Fedora-9-i386, but not after updating it.
3) It seems strange to me that there is no wlan0 entry in the Network Configuration window, neither for fc9 nor for fc10. (There is an eth0 entry though.) It feels even stranger that the systems connects anyway over wireless, even though there is no wlan0 entry, both for fc9 and fc10.
4) After having manually added wlan0 in Network Configuration window, it seems strange to me that the system tries to connect via wlan0, e.g. after a restart and login even though nothing is checked in the Wireless Device Configuration window for wlan0. (I believe this oddity is valid for eth0 too).
5) For Fedora 10, I get prompted to save the network configuration even in the case nothing has been changed.

I installed 10.04 LTS yesterday on a desktop. I have a problem with the mouse, it's very jumpy/not smooth. I can move it across the screen and it will jump up and down and left to right. Jittery I guess you would say. I've googled this and seen several people with the issue but no one has a rock solid solution. Does anyone here have any suggestions? I know it isn't the mouse, I've tried a different one, and it reacts the same on any surface.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jumpy Sound In 10.10

After upgrading to 10.10, I have been having all sorts of audio problems, mostly with sound skipping like a record. It happens with sounds both streamed from the internet and from my own system. It also seems to affect flash videos, but that might just be the video moving to sync with the sound? The weirdest thing is that if I move the mouse (either the laptop trackpad or the external mouse), it stops doing it, but as soon as I stop moving the mouse, it skips again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 11.04 - Online Playback Jumpy And Stutter

May 26, 2011

I like to watch TV shows online. 75% of the shows I watch are on the big sites like Hulu or CBS. But a lot of the shows I catch (normally older shows I never watched during first-run) are hosted with Megevideo or Loombo (moreso Loombo). 10.10 had no issues with playback quality. But since the upgrade to 11.04, online playback from loombo or megevideo like sites are very poor quality, jumpy and stutter. Video from the big sites are ok. I also noticed that playback in Firefox is not watchable on these sites but if I use Google Chrome it's watchable but still bad. I downloaded Flash from Adobe and installed, and so far I know I have all the plugins I need.

Here's what I have running:
Ubuntu 11.04 32bit.
Firefox 4.0.1 (Canonical).
Google Chrome 10.0.648.151.
Flash Plugin (according to about: plugin in Firefox) Shockwave Flash 10.3 r181.

Software :: Cinelerra-CV 4.1 Video Playback Is Jumpy - How To Adjust

Jul 20, 2010

New installation of Suse 11.3, with a new build of the git repository Cinelerra-CV 4.1 from the [URL] web site instructions.Loaded a 5 second mpg file into Cinelerra, and then tried to play it back in both the viewer and the main window. It does decode the video and play it back, however, the playback speed is not smooth. It jumps, in what look like 1 second intervals, and then it gets really slow towards the end of the playback. By jumps, I mean that it is like the speed of playback is on a curve with bumps on each second. Since this is a new installtion of Cinelerra, it could be some settings that are off, as it has been some time since using Cinelerra.For comparison, the same mpg file plays back fine in Kdenlive, although Kdenlive uses a much smaller playback screen...but it is nice and smooth in terms of playback speed. It also plays fine in Banshee.I did take a look at the Cinelerra html manual, and there was a section on system adjustments that you can make...although I would like to find out what is causing it, and if it is a feature of the Cinelerra build?

OpenSUSE Install :: Installation: Specify LUKS Bit Strength

Jul 5, 2011

Is there any way to specify the bit strength for LUKS when one is installing OpenSUSE 11.4? I've tried to find it (because imho 256 bit aes is a bit high for what little i do with my netbook) but I have not. I was going to try to control+alt+F4 to a shell and create the partition setup and create the LUKS container and see if that works but in the past, trying that doesn't work either because 1) the installer doesn't ask for the LUKS password or 2) it asks, setup finishes normally, but yet I then get what seems to be random boot errors like some times the /home doesn't mount, sometimes the swap doesn't enable, etc.

Anyone care to give some input? I've been around and around the installer and can't seem to find a way to do it.

Ubuntu :: Massive Lag - Stop Moving The Mouse The Video Gets Jumpy

Nov 16, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed at work on my Dell Optiplex 755, which runs perfect. So I decided to install Ubuntu on my home desktop, which so far has been a mistake. Booting up takes almost 5 minutes, after I login it takes about 2 minutes to get to my desktop, typing in any application (even a shell) is horribly lagged, almost to the point where the PC is unusable. I also get extreme lag when executing programs, or just simply clicking a submit button. It will take 2-10 seconds to actually click or execute. The weird part is visual effects extra works perfect and smooth.

CPU: i7 920
Ram 6Gb's
HD1: Veloci Raptor 300Gb 10k RPM
HD2: WD 1.5Tb (Storage)
Video: MSI N250GTS 1Gb

SmartD shows my Raptor healthy, here are the read test speeds.

Min Read Rate 7.6Mb/s
Max Read Rate 128.2 Mb/s
Avg Read Rate: 105.5 Mb/s
Avg Access Time: 8.6ms

Note: The graph has quite a few drop downs (as you can see the minimum is very low). I've also ran badblocks on the drive which came back with 0 errors. Do I need a special driver for my hard drive? I'm attempting to watch a movie on [URL] and it works fine as long as I continually move my mouse, when I stop moving the mouse the video gets jumpy.

Ubuntu / Apple :: 10.10 Maverick - PowerBook G4 15" Touchpad Jumpy/useless

Nov 13, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my PowerBook G4 (I think that's powerbook 5,6 but I could be mistaken). Most everything is fine from a function standpoint except for the touchpad/trackpad. Unlike most users who seem to be getting an insensitive touchpad, mine seems to be picking up some interference from an unknown source. The mouse frequently jumps around the screen either horizontally back and forth or sometimes vertically. If I disable the trackpad it seems to stop (at least for a few minutes). Sometimes I can lay my palm flat on the trackpad and it will cause the mouse to stand still also which makes the external mouse usable.

Are there any solutions to this? (I did install the, what is it, gpointing-devices package? The one that provides the GUI for touchpad configuration and that has not helped at all, except that I can use it to periodically disable the trackpad for a temporary fix)

Ubuntu :: Sound - Flash Videos Streams Fine But The Audio Is Very Jumpy And Skips Back

Oct 22, 2010

here's some background info: purchased a brand new netbook last week (samsung n130) and thought i'd set up a dual-boot to accompany the pre-installed windows xp sp3, and after a bit of research i decided upon installing ubuntu as my preferred linux os, which i believe at the time was and still is version 10.10.

but the problem is: when i attempt to watch flash videos (from videos for example) the video streams fine, but the audio is very jumpy and skips back and forth every few seconds. occasionally there are periods of say 10-15 seconds where the audio is ok. the problem exists on both firefox and chrome, and is exclusive to ubuntu. keep in mind that i'm an absolute novice when it comes to linux/ubuntu, etc.
