Just purchased a HP flash Drive @ Staples for a bargain ,for archival purposes.
Plugged it into my relativley trusty HP Vectra 500Mhz P3 powerbox <running > KNOPPIX 3.3 ver. on CD-ROM.
Alaways had luck with "no-name" 2 gb & smaller usb drives.this tyme USB drive is not recognized.
I am having trouble with getting my flash drive recognized. I would love a simple answer.

It showed up once in the Computer - File Browser and I was able to mount it and access the files on it, but since then it doesn't show up. It works fine on my Ubuntu 9.10 distro. I get the same results on both distos when I run #lsusb# The results are:

View 6 Replies View Relatedi have recently gotten the Knoppix 6.0, and have installed it on my usb flash drive. finally i can browse the internet again on that laptop, but alas, i can't watch any videos because flash player isnt installed yet. i tried to install it by myself and followed adobe's instructions but i just dont get why it won't install. here are my questions:
1. in the adobe instructions, it is said that i need to unpackage the files. and when i unpackage it, a new directory/folder is supposed to appear. but why does it always unpackage on the desktop? no folders are created when i unpackage it.
2. it is said that i need to navigate to the newly created directory and type a command. how am i supposed to navigate to a non-existent directory, huh? and how do you even navigate to certain directory? i typed help in the terminal (i'm using LXTerminal by the way) to look for a hint but i saw nothing there. so, how do you "navigate" using the terminal?
I really need to install the flash player. I've also tried using the Install components in start > system tools > install components and selected the 'flashplugin-nonfree: Flash support for your browser' but when i clicked install, nothing happens.
I have been running a computer under Windows XP for years, and recently it stopped booting unexpectedly. It tries to load windows, but partway though loading a BSOD flashes and it shuts down. To remedy this and hopefully fix this, my frined lent me some Knoppix CDs that I could boot from. He also lent me some external hard drives. I want to be able to access my files on my old hard drive.
Here's the problem: (in Knoppix 6) When I try to mount my main partition of my hard drive, which shows as sda2 (sda1 is an old recovery partition left over from when I ran vista), the following message pops up: "A job is pending on dev/sda2" A little later another error window pops up: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." I want to be able to mount my hard drive in Knoppix 6.
Every time I try to run another script from my knoppix.sh file, it pops up and says permission denied. I've also tried running the scripts manually after stopping the knoppix.sh script yet it still gives the same error.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am working on a computer that the hard drive crashed. Inititially they had a virus, reloaded windows, and had the computer up and running. When downloading software it crashed and will not boot. I have tried all the numerous routine fixes with no success including using the repair discs. The repair discs no longer work and they are unable to get a second set. As a last resort I am able to access the hard drive when booting from Knoppix from a CD. There are a couple things I would like to try from Knoppix, but do not know if it is possible. First, Is it possible to load the boot files from knoppix? Second, can you roll back the drivers from knoppix?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora with Midori. (Using Fedora LXDE spin, 32bit). I installed the flash-plugin package and it seems the flash plugin is not recognized by Midori. I also put the flashplugin.so file into /home/MyUserName/.mozilla/plugins/. Not sure what can be done to make Midori work with Flash in Fedora. I am experienced with other linux distributions but I am brand new to Fedora.

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04.03 on an ASUS P5VD2-X. There are numerous HDD attached, but one is uniquely Win XP, the other uniquely Ubuntu. Boot choice is via a GRUB loader. Ubuntu is the first choice normally. The problem is that more often than not, the system does not seem to be able to recognise the CD or DVD reader/writer. On some random occasions, they are recognised, but mostly not. But - and here is the upsetting bit - this problem never occurs when I boot up on Win XP. The CD/DVD devices are instantly and reliably recognised each and every time. So I guess that rules out a hardware or BIOS problem. This is a particularly annoying problem as use of the optical drives is required frequently, and it galls me having to revert to Windows just to use them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

I have a 2nd hard drive (500 GB) that I keep my media on. When I tried to access it, it wasn't showing up in places or even places > computer. I used system > administration > disk utility. On the left hand side it shows the drive listed with the type and model number. Right under that it shows 500 GB Hard Drive unrecognized unknown or unused. If possible I would like to recover the media on this drive. I had setup this drive as ext3 and had it mount /media/sdb1. I can go to /media/sdb1 in the file browser but nothing is there.

I have a weird problem with an sata partition. This drive is onle volume of an md raid set, and has one partition filling the whole drive. of type "fd" ( linux raid autodetect). When my machine boots, the drive containing this partition is present as /dev/sdc. However, the partition is not - there is no /dev/sdc1. If I look at the partition table in fdisk, all appears to be fine. If I do anything that causes the partition table to be rescanned (such as writing in fdisk, or running partprobe, ... ), the partition shows up fine at that point and all data is present and when I assemble the RAID using it, its in sync. This drive is attached to the same (motherboard) controller as my other drives which have their partitions recognized just fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had windows 7 installed on my machine and decided to go with a ubuntu win7 dual boot. The install went fine, but Ubuntu doesn't see my second HDD as anything but empty. My second HDD I set up in win7. It is actually two 320GB HDD striped together. It is holding alot of data that I would like to be able to access from both win7 and ubuntu.
When I run fdisk -l in the terminal I get:

I am trying to install this OS. However no matter what I do the UBUNTU instllation CD doesn't recognize the hard drive on which I would like to install the OS on.
I currently have two SATA hard drives connected to my computer. MY primary is my Windows 7 drive and my second hard drive is my spare.
When i load up UBUNTU and get to the window where I can select which hard drive/partition to install to my second spare drive isn't there.
rEFIt can not see my USB thumb drive during boot, therefore can't install. Tried using the dd utility to copy the Ubuntu ISO to a spare partition on my internal hard drive. Now, rEFIt sees that drive but attempting to boot into it gives me a 'Missing Operating System' message. So I'm back at trying to get the system to boot from the pendrive.
