Hardware :: File Server - RAID Considerations - Bargain Hunting Vs Spending Money?
Feb 25, 2010
I was hoping I could pick your brains about this if anyone has the time!- I'm going to set up a file server for a record label who's office has fewer than 20 people. I would like it to have > 2TB storage on RAID 5. (To beat their current 2TB on a single disk). I feel like I have a pretty good candidate with this server from here:
1U Server - with 4 x Hot-swap SATA (1156pin) Dual-Core 2.8GHz - Intel Pentium G6950 - 3MB, 533 MHz, 1156pin 4GB memory [URL].. I can pick this up locally to avoid shipping but will have to pay CA state sales tax. About $1000 if I use software RAID, or a little over $1400 w/ their recommended RAID controller- LSI 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML I will buy 4 of these WD RE3 drives: (1TB for $160 w/ TLER for RAID)[URL].. How am I doing here? Am I spending too much? Where do YOU shop for fair priced servers? Would you consider a cheap 2nd hand PowerEdge or something - replacing the SCSI controller with an economical HighPoint RAID controller that supports 4 or 8 SATA2 drives..?
They are prepared to spend some money but I'd really don't want to waste money on anything too overkill. They are friends and also people I work for on occasion. I don't mean to open the can of worms about hardware RAID vs software RAID because the answer is clearly that hardware RAID is better. But for a simple file server? I could afford to get an 8 bay 2U server with room to grow if i didn't spend the cash on that fancy controller. However, I would love for them to see a red LED light up on the server when a drive fails. What would you do?
Last but not least. I'm planning on using ubuntu server + samba. Without starting a "which distro is best" thread, can any one warn me if ubuntu is a poor choice for a file server that they can just turn on an forget about? I've been cutting my teeth on Fedora/Ubuntu for a couple years now. I can still benefit from the ease of use an community support for ubuntu, but I'm not afraid to get my hands a little dirty if there is truly a better choice. But I don't want to curse at the computer. I just want to get the job done!

I'm taking a very large collection of music and also newly purchased anime DVDs and adding them to another large existing collection, basically hundreds of ogg/mp3 and OGV-type files on a jukebox system to serve to my PS3 via mediatomb. (No, I'm not handing out copies and risking the feds at my door! I'm just trying to save my CDs and DVDs from ruin by over-replaying.)
My problem is I want to save electricity and minimize my carbon footprint but also I need a LOT of terabytes for what I have and what I will have, since these are going to be DVD quality (and later Blu-Ray quality) movies playing on a big TV from the PS3. I want RAID 6 level redundancy so that when 2 or even 3 drives fail (as Murphy's Law says they will want to do all at once), I can still recover. (Yes, I'm an insurance dude, with all the risk aversion that this implies)
What would y'all suggest that I do here, short of getting the same energy-hogging racks in corporate server rooms? Is there a way to "go green" with a multi terabyte multiple redundancy system or am I just wishfully thinking?

I want to transfer an arbitrarily large file (say >20GB) between 2 servers. I have several considerations:
Must use port 22 (ssh) because of firewall restrictions
Cannot tax the CPU (production server)
Memory efficiency
Would prefer a checksum check but that could be done manually
Time is not of the essence
Server A and Server B are on the same private network (sharing a switch) and data security is not a concern, Server A and Server B are not on the same network and transfer will be via the public internet so data security is a concern, My first thought was using nice on an scp command with a non-CPU-intensive cypher (blowfish?). But I thought I'll refer to the SU community for recommendations.

I am currently struggling with one of my tasks.I was asked to find a way how to determine how much time an _already running_ process is spending in user and kernel space.E.G. <some tool> <pid>[Control] + [c]<pid> spent 12.1 seconds in user and 1.52 seconds in kernel space.Does something like this exist? Basically I guess I am looking for something similar to time, except that the process is already running.So..a) Is there a tool which fulfills this task?b) Is there a way to write your own software which does the job? Is it even possible to code something I am looking for?I recently found strace -c -p <pid>, but well, this is not exactly what I was looking for.

I just installed Debian 5.0.4 successfully. I want to use the PC as a File Server with two Drives configured as a RAID 1 device. Everything with the RAID device works fine, the only question I have belogs to the GRUB 0.97 Booloader. I would like to be able to boot my Server even if one of the disks fail or the filesystem containing the OS becomes corrupt, so I configured only the data partitions to be a RAID 1 device, so on the second disk should be a copy of the last stable installation, similar to this guide:[URL]...

I want to create a file-server with Ubuntu and have two additional hard drives in a RAID 1 setup. Current Hardware: I purchased a RAID controller from [URL]... (Rosewill RC-201). I took an old machine with a 750GB hard drive (installed Ubuntu on this drive). I installed the Rosewill RAID card via PCI port. Connected two 1TB hard drives to the Rosewill raid card. Went into the RAID bios and configured it to RAID 1.
My Problem: When I boot into Ubuntu and go to the hard drive utility (I think that's what its called). I see the RAID controller present with two hard drives configured separately. I format and tried varies partition combination and at the end of the day I see two separate hard drives. Just for giggles, I also tried RAID 0 to see if they would combine the drives.

I'm recently reborn again in Linux and a lot of these repository descriptions can sometimes seem vague to me or just a bit overwhelming. I just installed 9.10 Server since I just wiped a brand new Windows 7 laptop to install Karmic Desktop on it. So I finally have a need for this.
The question: Back in college I could use windows terminal to log into my schools *nix servers and could remotely login (w/ password) and it took me to bash. I believe I came across a repository of a GUI version of this feature while digging, but I want the command line version 1st. (IDK if I want it more for nostalgia or for power). Eventually I plan to have both types running though. But, what service am I looking for?

I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller. The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured. The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card. The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.
The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).
I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.
Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.

I've done a pretty inclusive search and haven't found a command line cheat sheet for Ubuntu more recent than 2007. Is that one recent enough, have the basic commands stayed the same? I know I tried tweaking grub 2 and was in a whole new world from the grub i tweaked a few years ago (I know were not talking the same thing from boot loader to os, but it seems there would have been slight changes at least since 2007).

I am a newbie in linux n programming, I need to use ubuntu for my research at school about building an IMS server use openims.
The problem is I need an additional script in C/C++ for my openims server to make an extension call. I hope one number can represent 3 client as receiver/operator. So, when I call the number, the server can forward the call to those three receiver by hunt.
1st call will be forward to the 1st receiver.
2nd call will be forward to the 2nd receiver.
3rd call will be forward to the 3rd receiver.
then, 4th call will be forward back to the 1st receiver, etc.

I just wanted to put Gnuplot on my machine to try it . I have Fedora11 and I have a copy of this program on my installation disk. Yum install goes off and wastes 10 minutes updating its list of files in the repositoryand then starts to deal with what I want. It does not give me the opportunity to say "hey its on this disk already" go get it there . No it unnecessarily updates all its records? Next time I want something it will do the same even an hour or so later WHY?

I am looking to convert a raid 1 server I have to raid 10. It is using software raid, currently I have 3 drives in raid 1. Is it possible to boot into centos rescue, stop the raid 1 array. Then create the raid 10 with 4 drives, 3 of which still has the raid 1 metadata, will mdadm be able to figure it out and resync properly keeping my data? or is there a better way to do it?

I have a box that doesn't have a Raid controller or a software raid running currently. I would like to make it a RAID 1. Since it seems there isn't any IDE RAID controllers hardly around, I have another HD that is the exact model as the drive currently in the box running CentOS. Can I some how add the second drive and get the box to mirror from here own out? The box gets really hot and I want to be ready for a HD failure.

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:
Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....
Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

I've found the office equivalent to MS office that I was currently using and have acclimated myself to those programs. Now, I'm looking for the closest equivalent to Microsoft money where I can access my on-line account and download the transactions as I have been doing with Microsoft Money. I've recently downloaded kmymoney, but I don't know how to set up the on-line account download.

Here is my system: I have dell poweredge 1950 PERC 6 with 300 GB raid system. It has two disks of each 300GB RAID mirrored system. I have few applications and data that reached around 280GB. As you know, poweredge 1950 we can have only two disk.
They are not mission critical. Hence, I wanted to remove the raid system and use as a non-raid system. By doing it, The applications and data can grow upto 600GB. I do not want to loose the data and setup. I am not so clear about RAID system and its conversion.

I have a problem configuring a RAID server under Ubuntu 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31.17) with mdadm (v2.6.7.1). First I had some hardware issues that finally got solved by using another motherboard. Now I am dealing with the software part.In order to ease things, I am trying to configure a RAID 5 with three partitions in one disk. I have two HD's, one IDE where the OS lies (recognized as sda), and another where I intend to build the RAID (recognized as sdb). In this second drive I have made three partitions (sdb1, sdb2 & sdb3) of the same size.I've already re-installed Ubuntu 9.10 a couple of times, zeroed the superblocks of the partitions, repartitioned the disks with different partition sizes (I am using 5 GB partitions to save time). I've gone through this process several times, and I really don't know how to move forward now. If RAID is about trust and reliability, this is exactly what I'm not able to get.

I have a new home server I built this weekend with 4 x 320 GB Seagate Barracuda SATA drives. I am going to load my O.S. this week however I don't have a RAID controller so I would like to utilize 'Software RAID' via 'mdadm' package. My question is since this is a general home server with no specific function rather than hold my data reliabily and resonably fast, how do you guys recommend I configure my partitions for RAID? What level would be best with my 4 drive configuration? RAID5 or RAID10? Should I use a 3 drive RAID and use the 4th as a spare? Please let me know what you recommend as I don't have a lot of expertise with what is not practical or useless when it comes to Mdadm RAID.

I am running a RAID0 array, with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed.
When i install LL10.04 through Wubi, it installs fine, reboots, continues the installation procedure, then it gives me an error box "No root file system is defined".
I have attempted pressing the "OK" button 10 or 15 times, however it does not progress. The box just keeps on popping up. My only option is a hard reset.
I've tried downloading the latest version of Wubi from the official website, and allowing Wubi to download ubuntu itself, and still nothing.
I do not want to create a new partition for Ubuntu and use the GRUB loader. I have a multi boot system and would like to stick to the windows boot loader.
