When I replace a drive in a RAID 1 and then resync it, why does the file access date (all the files) on the drive from which I am syncing not change? Shouldn't the file access date always change when I copy a file? Are there ways to overgo this?

I think there are probably some potential challanges along the way to get this "working" For example, it seems to me that the array may present itself to application code as a single device. I need to drill down into the RAID and talk to each physical device in turn via some sort of pass-through mechanism. I'm currently pretty lost - can anyone point me in the "right" direction

I get a lot of JPEG files from different places on the Net which I either turn around and upload or burn to disk, and having the "original" date of either download or last mod in a graphics app would be for me, in the long run, a lot more helpful when deciding, for instance, which files to "recycle" or pass on backing up more than once.I've tried doing this on my own every now and then. Where I run into problems is that it appears "stat" and "date" use different formats for date information, and I can't seem to puzzle out how to "translate" one to the other satisfactorily for the latter command.
Just to give an example:
stat foo.jpg |grep Modify gives me
Modify: 2010-07-12 06:28:56.890625000 -0400
Passing that string as-is to date foo.jpg, I get the errordate: unknown option -- 0 and the usual semi-courteous suggestion to Try 'date --help' for more information.Somehow my TexInfo database got screwed up somewhere along the line and info dategives me the short article on date input formats, not the full documentation for the command

I have been moving small amounts of data from the drives to my OS drive and those parts share easily, but I want to move away from that method to move large amounts of data at the same time.I have tried using Samba as it is used for file sharing between systems and that I have to give my Windows box permission through Samba.
Trick is, I'm not sure where to start, though I have an idea and wanted to know if this is the right track before I start editing my file system.
I want to access my hard drive to copy over my old documents. So I boot into a LiveUSB, mount my ubuntu partition, and then cd to my home directory, but I can't open it. I get "permission denied." I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".

- for various developers, testers and documentation users.
I would like to setup the following permissions on the main code repository directory:
dev - write permission
test - execute permission
doc - read permission
public (anyone outside these groups) - deny all access
I am unsure what chmod setting to use, or if this is even possible in ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAt our company we have a central server with client files. This server has a SSH server installed, and through Nautilus all employees can access the files. However, I have a few questions:
1. Most employees need access to all folders, because they might use them at some point in time. However, I want to make sure they are not accessing things they do not need. How can I do this? For instance, if somebody copies all of the folders to his/her computer, I want to be able to see this in some sort of log. Can this be done? Copying and accessing in general is what is of my concern.
2. Some employees only need access to specific folders. Can this be easily configured with SFTP?
3. Some also use SSH and type commands which I want to check every now and then (e.g. to make sure an intern is not again copying information or accessing folders they should not be in). What is a good way to do this?
I would like to know if it is possible to deny the access to a file for root? Would ACL's be a possibility? I have "googled" around but haven't found anything interesting (except SELinux). I should secure a password file to an important database.

For example, I have an executable, 'miscreant.bin' that has all of it's required libraries in a directory named "libraries", in the same directory as the said executable. I can launch the program and make it use the libraries included with the executable rather than the system with:

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just switched from a basic digital camera to a more advanced one that stores both Jpeg and Raw (.Nef - it's a Nikon) files for me.When importing files in Digikam, I rename the files so that they start with Date and Time. Example: 20110121-223748.JPG for a photo taken on Jan 21st 2011 at 22:37:48.I was a bit surprised when importing both the JPEG and the Raw version of the same photo, that the filename is different by a few seconds (no constant offset, sometimes they are the same):

I did some "research" by looking at the exif data of both files (using "exiftool 20110121-223748.JPG" from the command line). Here is what I got back

So it seems that Digikam is using the "File Modification Date/Time" (different in the Jpeg's and Raw's of my camera) rather than the "Create Date" (the same for both Jpeg and Raw). (The few seconds difference in "File Modification Date/Time" between the two versions of the same photo is probably due to the time that my camera needs to write away the data on the SD memory card. I guess.) Is there a way to have Digikam use the Create Date? (Or the Date/Time Original?)
PS: I'm on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, using DigiKam 1.2.0

I would love to see that diagram. Years ago on a platform far away (Digitial VAX/VMS) their manuals had such a flow chart that covered not only the user-group-owner and read-write-execute permissions decision making but also include "access control list" processing at a superficial level. If someone has access to the VAX/VMS flow chart, that might be a start toward sorting what linux does.

When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

Also, my engine is 0.96.5. The latest version is 0.97. But "aptitude upgrade" can not upgrade the engine to 0.97. I understand 0.97 is still on testing. I am wondering if I can just stay with 0.96.5 and wait for the 0.97 passing all tests. if so, does it cause any security issue?
Lucid 10.04, auto upgraded from 9.10, accessed through NoMachine NX from my MacBook Pro 10.6 system.
When I try to access the time settings through the System > Administration > Time and Date menu, all I get is the greyed-out display with the message Not authotized to make changes at the bottom.
With other administration functions, I am asked for sudo-style authorization with my password. That doesn't happen with Time and Date.
My little server box running 11.04 currently has two drives configured in a LVM, a 160gb internal drive and a 1tb usb drive.I have three logical volumes root and swap on the 160gb and backup on the 1tb. I am going to be changing the internal drive for a 8gb SSD and would like to keep the data currently on the external, is it possible to do this?

When I use this, the access date of the subfolders are changed, and I need them to remain what they were before the command was run. I don't have access to a legitimate Linux system, so I'm not sure if this is the fault of cygwin or the ls command. The script is being used to find the last access date of all files underneath several subfolders and then return the latest date found in each subfolder as the last access date for that subfolder. For some reason, some of these folders have files in them that are newer than the folder's last access date, so the script is meant to give us a list of the true last access date for these folders.

One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:

I'm looking for a method for modifying some jpg photo files last modification date with the corresponding timestamp creation date of each file.The reason is that shotwell import pictures in folders according to last modification date which is stupid on my opinion.
