Ubuntu Networking :: Hunting Intruders In Wireless Network?
Oct 1, 2010
Many of us maybe are afraid to by the fact that others are using our wireless connection (without permission of course). What is the command I have to run on the terminal in order to list possible logs of intruders?

I'm recently reborn again in Linux and a lot of these repository descriptions can sometimes seem vague to me or just a bit overwhelming. I just installed 9.10 Server since I just wiped a brand new Windows 7 laptop to install Karmic Desktop on it. So I finally have a need for this.
The question: Back in college I could use windows terminal to log into my schools *nix servers and could remotely login (w/ password) and it took me to bash. I believe I came across a repository of a GUI version of this feature while digging, but I want the command line version 1st. (IDK if I want it more for nostalgia or for power). Eventually I plan to have both types running though. But, what service am I looking for?

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).
1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...
Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?

my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.

I am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?

I've done a pretty inclusive search and haven't found a command line cheat sheet for Ubuntu more recent than 2007. Is that one recent enough, have the basic commands stayed the same? I know I tried tweaking grub 2 and was in a whole new world from the grub i tweaked a few years ago (I know were not talking the same thing from boot loader to os, but it seems there would have been slight changes at least since 2007).

Well I have been using linux for sometime, and have kept strong passwords for every user account. But recently I noticed when we boot into run level 1, it does not ask for any password. This means that anyone can turn on my computer in my absence, on grub menu press a, then 1 to append 1 to the kernel arguments, which will make my system boot in run level 1.It won't ask for any password. Once in run level 1, the intruder can easily access my files, copy them, change their permissions, change even the root password.
Now how can I make my system more secure? Is there a way to get detailed info of each log in session, like which user, which run level, for how long and things like that?

I am a newbie in linux n programming, I need to use ubuntu for my research at school about building an IMS server use openims.
The problem is I need an additional script in C/C++ for my openims server to make an extension call. I hope one number can represent 3 client as receiver/operator. So, when I call the number, the server can forward the call to those three receiver by hunt.
1st call will be forward to the 1st receiver.
2nd call will be forward to the 2nd receiver.
3rd call will be forward to the 3rd receiver.
then, 4th call will be forward back to the 1st receiver, etc.

I am planning a trip for a few days and I will be staying at an inn with Wifi access. All the guests are allowed to use it. A friend of mine has been there, he told me there are several other private spots around the house, i.e. lots of other people using Wifi. My friend told me the inn uses WEP, so who knows how many times their access point has been hacked and accessed without permission...
My concern is that I will be there for a few days with my notebook, I will have to work once in a while, connected to the Internet. Is there some precaution I should take to protect my notebook from intruders? Is it advisable to install a firewall in my notebook (iptables?) or am I just overreacting? Is it possible for one of the guests or neighbors to break into my notebook?

I was hoping I could pick your brains about this if anyone has the time!- I'm going to set up a file server for a record label who's office has fewer than 20 people. I would like it to have > 2TB storage on RAID 5. (To beat their current 2TB on a single disk). I feel like I have a pretty good candidate with this server from here:
1U Server - with 4 x Hot-swap SATA (1156pin) Dual-Core 2.8GHz - Intel Pentium G6950 - 3MB, 533 MHz, 1156pin 4GB memory [URL].. I can pick this up locally to avoid shipping but will have to pay CA state sales tax. About $1000 if I use software RAID, or a little over $1400 w/ their recommended RAID controller- LSI 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML I will buy 4 of these WD RE3 drives: (1TB for $160 w/ TLER for RAID)[URL].. How am I doing here? Am I spending too much? Where do YOU shop for fair priced servers? Would you consider a cheap 2nd hand PowerEdge or something - replacing the SCSI controller with an economical HighPoint RAID controller that supports 4 or 8 SATA2 drives..?
They are prepared to spend some money but I'd really don't want to waste money on anything too overkill. They are friends and also people I work for on occasion. I don't mean to open the can of worms about hardware RAID vs software RAID because the answer is clearly that hardware RAID is better. But for a simple file server? I could afford to get an 8 bay 2U server with room to grow if i didn't spend the cash on that fancy controller. However, I would love for them to see a red LED light up on the server when a drive fails. What would you do?
Last but not least. I'm planning on using ubuntu server + samba. Without starting a "which distro is best" thread, can any one warn me if ubuntu is a poor choice for a file server that they can just turn on an forget about? I've been cutting my teeth on Fedora/Ubuntu for a couple years now. I can still benefit from the ease of use an community support for ubuntu, but I'm not afraid to get my hands a little dirty if there is truly a better choice. But I don't want to curse at the computer. I just want to get the job done!

I only just installed Ubuntu 11.04 dual booted with Windows 7 which I have been using all this while. On Windows 7, I use a protected wireless network. I also have access to a wired network. Both the wireless and wired network work perfectly on 7.
During the installation of Ubuntu, it asked me to connect to a wireless network, which I could without issue.
However, once Ubuntu 11.04 completed installation, its no longer able to detect the wireless network! It's not even connecting to my wired network.

I've got a Zotac MAG HD-ND01 with XBMC live installed. This is built on Karmic Koala and runs very nicely through the wired NIC.
I configure the box using a cable. I'm using WPA2-PSK and it is clearly authenticating OK.. It gets an IP address.. the AP shows a connection to the box. My XP laptop connects to the access point OK.. just can't connect to the box via the wireless, and it can't see the network using wireless.
I have followed a number of threads on connecting Atheros 9XXX wireless [URL] but no joy.
Also, can Ubuntu connect to the AP at any speed greater than 54MB? My windows PC connects at 144MB+ . Will ndiswrappers connect at those sorts of speeds?

Hi - I am new to Linux and Ubuntu so I have no idea how to fix or problem solve unfortunately I installed Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch recently on this laptop and all was good. I connected to my WIFI network no problem. It's WPA PSK encrypted, DHCP enabled. I just set it up in Network Manager and it was all fine. Then after a few days I installed a printer and some packages and updates via synaptics. The network connection started dropping after 20 mins or so. Only a reboot would restore it - auto connects at first, runs fine till it drops then never will reconnect. I posted on here, someone gave me some lines to put in a config file. I tried that. I didn't seem to help much, problem remained. Yesterday I checked for updates and there were a whole bunch so I just installed them all. Now I cannot connect at all. I have deleted and recreated the connection in Network Manager but it doesn't help. It tries to establish a connection but never achieves it. I am connecting to the internet now on the same laptop booted into Windows, so all the hardware is fine.
Can anyone who knows about ubuntu networking help? Do I need to do a complete reinstall? Seems a bit much, but it worked when I initially installed the OS. I want to like Ubuntu, but something as basic as connecting to the internet is pretty vital so reluctantly having to start using Windows again...

Another Ubuntu install, another round of wireless problems. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop that I used Wubi to install Ubuntu 10.4 on alongside Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything installed perfectly but it's not detecting my wireless network so I therefore have no wireless access. My wireless network icon is gray with a red "!" on it; when I click it I get:
Wired Network
disconnected
Wireless Networks
disconnected
My wireless network does not show up at all; it's not hidden. When I try to enter it manually, I do so and when I click it I immediately get a popup that says
Wireless network
Disconnected - you are now offline.
I only have a wireless connection since the router is in another part of the house, and this is really frustrating me that this stuff doesn't just work on install like OSX and Windows does.

I have three 64 bit machines, a netbook and 32 bit notebook and my internet goes via an Wifi router to which other Windoooze machines connect. I want to change to Lucy now and hope it is easier to setup the network in clean manner.
