Hardware :: External USB Drive - Mkfs Hangs / Solution For This?
Nov 13, 2010
I have a 1TB external USB drive that I'm having a lot of trouble with.
First I created a 500G partition, then formatted it with ext3. That went as expected.
Then I tried to copy a large (~50G) archive to it, and at about 13G it just stopped. I was using "watch" to view the progress, and it just stopped suddenly. I left it for quite a while, to see if it was actually doing something, just slowly, but nothing.
I tried to kill the copy command, but it wouldn't die. I killed the parent processes, and it just kept moving up the process tree until init was its parent. I tried rebooting.. I got the message "system is going down for reboot now", then the first few messages of the reboot process, and then it just stopped at "unmounting local filesystems". Again, I left it for a while, nothing. I ended up hard booting it.
After rebooting, I recreated the partition, then tried formatting it. This time it started writing inode tables, then just stopped at a certain point. I think at 133/4001. Again, I left it for a while and it didn't move.
Again, I tried killing the process and it moved up the tree until init was its parent. Rebooting hung at the same place, and again had to hard boot it.
This time I deleted the partition and tried creating a small partition - 500M. mkfs formatted it as expected, and I was able to mount and write to the partition.
I deleted the small partition, and tried creating a larger one - 100G this time. fdisk created the partition just fine (and did not complain or report any errors through this whole process), but again mkfs gets stuck.. this time at 34/801 inode tables. I haven't been timing it, but I want to say it's been at least 10 - 15 minutes.
dmesg reports some drive errors, but I'm not sure what they mean code...

I have more than a dozen servers running CentOS (mostly supermicro servers) everytime i do mkfs.ext3 or mkfs.ext4, it always hangs the server (nothing is responding, not even the terminal) can't even do Ctrl+C to kill it. but the funny thing is, if i leave it on for hours, it'll finish eventually.
this puzzles me, i've tried so many different SATA drives and different servers, different kernels, different CentOS. for example purposes, my CentOS 5.3 runs 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5 kernel. i also have 5.4 and 5.5. mkfs.ext3 works fine on SAS, but always hangs on SATA. here's where it usually hangs Writing inode tables: 2126/7453

I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.
*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410
I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.
It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...

In F10 the boot sequence hangs just after loading anacron. I booted with interactive mode and after saying 'yes' to starting anacron I'm prompted to start 'local'. When I say yes, my system hangs.
I've seen quite a few posts regarding very similar issues that people were having. None of them seem to have a clear cut solution.
Some posts mentioned about the wrong video drivers, however I've been using the same video drivers for a couple of months now and never experienced this problem.
I looked at /etc/rc.local and all it has in it is 'touch /var/lock/sybsys/local'
I also looked at the file above and there is nothing in it.
Any ideas/solutions? Everything was working just fine the other day. so I'm completely baffled.

Let me start off with the usual: I'm a linux newbie but am doing pretty good so far with google by my side. I've come across a problem I cant seem to find an answer to:
I just got a CyberPower 685 AVR UPS. I Installed their power panel software and it works great in CentOS 5.4. When I reboot, the system hangs right after the "Red Hat Nash 5.6..... Starting" message. I've left it for 20 mins so far and it's still hanging. If I unplug the USB data/shutdown cable, within about 10 seconds it starts detecting hard drives and continues booting...
Ive even returned the UPS for another to see if it was bad, and it still is giving me problems.

I am running du -h --max-depth=1 and it is hanging, presumably processing a large folder.
Could you give me a list of the large folders in the Redhat OS?
Is there any way to check if du has failed or is hanging/processing a folder?
How long should du -h --max-depth=1 take on 40GB of data?
Solved, it was taking a long time on a 29gb /var/log folder

I am unable to boot with kernel 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.x86_64 which was installed while applying software updates. It hangs with the last message issued "Registering binary handler for Windows Applications". Searching led to it being related to a problem with the nvidia drivers. I followed the directions in several posts - delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf, reboot, run nvidia-xconfig, reboot and all is fine, but not in my case. The first reboot works but the screen is wrong. There is a 1 inch wide black border around the presentation window. If I then do the nvidia-xconfig and reboot, i am back to where I was before - boot hangs after issuing "Registering...". If I boot to the last good kernel, everything works fine. This happened to me once before and I was able to fix it by rebuilding the nvidia kernel (I think that was what I had to do), but I can't find out how to do that. I have akmod and kmod installed which are supposed to take care of this problem. I booted to kernel 13-92 recovery mode, deleted the xorg.conf file and ran nvidia-xconfig from there. Still fails. I don't know what to list here, but I will do my best to supply whatever is necessary.

I've been attempting to install 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Studio 1749 with the intention of making a dual-boot system. Attempting to install with a live CD using the default settings, I got as far as pressing ENTER on "Install Ubuntu" before the screen went completely black. The CD drive spun wildly, but nothing ever appeared on the screen. I tried the fix detailed here:
http://bennybeta.blogspot.com/2009/1...udio-1555.html
typing "nomodeset" as an option, and using the "apic=off" option. When I did this, I was no longer greeted with a blank black screen, but instead with a blinking cursor, but the installation still hung. The keyboard was unresponsive and I could not open a terminal. I also tried using the alternate installer instead, and got the same results.
After this, I tried installing using wubi, and on boot I get exactly the same results: black screen without "nomodeset" and a blinking cursor otherwise.
I should also mention that the same thing happens for every option on the installation screen, including the option to "try ubuntu" by booting from the CD.
Does anyone know what could be causing this issue, and how I might install ubuntu on my machine?

LAN with two desktops and laptop. Using SSH they can all see each other and share files fine.
Recently bought a Noontec Media player. It can see the three computers okay and grab files from them (or just play them over the network) but the Noontec drive is not visible from any of the three machines on the LAN.
I've bumbled around a lot but not getting anywhere and it's getting late so thought I'd try my luck here. I can ping it!!! Just doesn't appear on the network. Weird.
When I go Places->Connect to Server, I put in the IP and I can get to a password GUI but the manual and nowhere on the net mentions what that password is. What I do know is the media player is supposed to work with Samba and all is set up fine for that, both the computers appear there fine, just not the Noontec.

I just installed Fedora 12 from a DVD . The process completed without incident.
I then inserted a DVD into my internal drive and nothing happened.
I then logged out and logged in again as root, and tried again-same result; nothing!
Could it have something to do with the new PolicyKit? I didn't have this problem with Fedora 11.

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.

I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.

I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

My computer is hanging on boot if I do not have the USB drive attached. The USB is in /etc/fstab as: UUID=023d6f83-04f5-4248-82d6-c2dbd1a77e18 /mnt/usbdrive ext4 defaults 0 0
This is all I can see on the monitor once it hangs (Ubuntu1004 is the label on my root filesystem): fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 Ubuntu1004: clean, 56288/1921360 files, 425861/7681078 blocks
If I plug in the USB drive while it is at this point, it is happy and continues booting...
Here is some output from /var/log/messages if it helps at all (I'm assuming the 6.977 and 120.245 are times, meaning I plugged in the USB drive at 120 seconds, so you can see that it was hung up during that time):
Jun 13 11:35:30 BSERVER kernel: [ 6.791619] eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0xC5E1
Jun 13 11:35:30 BSERVER kernel: [ 6.832413] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30

I am trying to install Xubuntu from a flash drive on my PC. I used UNetBootin to get it on my flash drive. When it boots up I get to the Pre Splash screen and I choose Install Xubuntu, it goes to the Xubuntu Splash screen and just hangs there and hangs and hangs. Even if I click Try before Install, it just hangs.
I have a Pentium 4
20GB Hard Drive
512MB of Ram...
Is there a Text install? If so if I install that way will it install the desktop to or just command line? I figured maybe something went wrong when I put it on the flash drive so I am trying again.
