My 10.04 system just crashed for 'no reason' .
Looking through the system logs the rtkit daemon was started up a bout a minute before the crash. Is there a better place to see if my system has been compromised? What should I look for?

I have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora. However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).
Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. Something really weird keeps happening to me, a total of 3 times so far, and given how it occurs. When I click I all of a sudden get a black screen with some output about states and then the gnome login is displayed.
Here is how it happened:
1) I clicked on the close button on Google Chrome.
2) I double clicked on the Skype icon in the panel.
3) I clicked on a dialog in a Windows 7 Virtual Box guest.
why this is occurring? I doubt you will so how the heck do I go about diagnosing something like this?

I just booted up ubuntu, and instead of the beautiful default appearance, my task bar and some of the icons in my launcher (home folder, workplace switcher) look like they were thrown back 5 or 6 years in time.

Im having a hanging problem with a HP dl160g6. uname -a shows:
Linux mail.xxxxx 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 #1 SMP Thu May 13 13:08:30 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The server was working fine since November 09 until a month or 2 ago.Sometimes (almost daily now) the machine hangs and shows the front "health led" blinking red.The services do not respond, locally i can see the login screen but when attempt to logon it freezes (the same happens with ssh).2 weeks ago i open a case in HP and the support sugest that the problem is in the X server (??), since then the system starts in runlevel 3 but the problem continues. A week ago open another case, on Tuesday make a BIOS upgrade but today in the morning the server hangs again.
Theres no strange messages in log files but... after the Tuesday hungs (before the upgrade) i can see the error msg below (thanks to the change to console mode):
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 30.Dazed and confused, but trying to continue.Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 20.Dazed and confused, but trying to continue.Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
adding "nohpet" as kernel parameter does not work.

I'm pinging a certain website and what happens is that each time the ping process freezes for an unknown reason ca. 10-15 sec then it starts to ping. Note that only this particular domain causes this hanging and Ctrl-c seems to have no effect at all! The domain is niteco. So far I've tried several independent linux systems all with the same result however other non-linux systems ping normally.

I was using gparted to resize my /var partition, which is supposed to be an ext4 partition, and during the beginning stages of the resize/move procedure I cancelled out of the process despite the warning this might be bad. The process was in the middle of the "read" stage so I figured nothing can go wrong during a read, but now I cannot access this partition mount wise. Is there anyway to repair this?

When booting from HDD error is system 32hal dll is missing or corrupt but HDD C: is 0 anyway. I just want to install so I can play with Ubuntu.

So I was moving and resizing a ntfs partition and i just touched gparted window and it crashed!! it was about 66% of finishing the operation... Now i guess i have a big mess in my hard drive and i dont know how to start solving it! i am in a ubuntu live cd?
If i open gparted now it shows the same partition table than before resizing and moving.. so i guess now part of my data is in this unallocated space after the sda5 partition.

On my Linux system, I want to create a symbolic link to a folder on my Windows 7 partition formatted FAT32. I use:
sudo ln -s /media/OS/Users/dennis/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft ~/.minecraft
However, I end up with a file in my home directory called .minecraft and when I try to access it, I receive:
bash: CD: .minecraft: Too many levels of symbolic links
is there a way to make the symbolic link to the FAT32 folder?

I got 2 HDDs, I had created LVM by two of them. When I was trying to install quota it was saying it is better if you run fsck first message. When I tried to run fsck. It warned me that I could lose some of my data. So it happened. Actually it is worse: I can't boot my Fedora 11. When I try to run installer in rescue mode, it says no linux partition find. When I try to install (just to see partitions) it shows LVM volumes of hdds are ok but the partition which is / (root)partition seems in unknown format. How can I save my datas? Or can i restore my partitions, LVM?

error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>
Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.
Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.
I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

One of my disks in my computer crashed, it was the one containing /boot and some data partitions. The other system and /home partitions were on a second disk, which is ok.
I was wondering, can I create a new /boot partition, and keep on using the rest of the system? Can I somehow do it with a chroot from a live/installer disk, run grub, and use my system again? I have another disk which I can put in the system, but there is even an unused partition on the disk which is ok (but it is rather big for /boot).

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have
Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)
I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
Partition table entries are not in disk order.

I recently did a clean install of 11.04 Beta, and I must have done something wrong with the mount points during installation, which resulted in me having a different home folder mount point or something. The old partition on which I have my home folder needed to be mounted manually. I did that once, and then upon reboot, I couldn't access the partition anymore. Disk Utility now shows the partition as "unknown filesystem".
The output of fdisk is as follows (if that helps at all):
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
[Code]....
On a side note, I tried using TestDisk to restore the partition, but I only created a DD image of the damaged partition, but now I'm stuck, as I'm not sure how to mount it, or if it's possible to retrieve files if I succeed in mounting the image.
