I just booted up ubuntu, and instead of the beautiful default appearance, my task bar and some of the icons in my launcher (home folder, workplace switcher) look like they were thrown back 5 or 6 years in time.

How do I get it back to the default setting?
I have kubuntu 8.1 installed. When i started the machine to day, the appearance and theme was changed to GNOME. How do i get back my KDE desktop. Even my internet connection is not working now!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10. Something really weird keeps happening to me, a total of 3 times so far, and given how it occurs. When I click I all of a sudden get a black screen with some output about states and then the gnome login is displayed.
Here is how it happened:
1) I clicked on the close button on Google Chrome.
2) I double clicked on the Skype icon in the panel.
3) I clicked on a dialog in a Windows 7 Virtual Box guest.
why this is occurring? I doubt you will so how the heck do I go about diagnosing something like this?
I am testing about using SSL Certificate in apache web server using Ubantu 10.04.2 (64 bit edition). And I insert SSLcertificate and private.key file into "default-ssl" file in "sites-available" folder. But when I call the website, SSL certificate show "Could not verify this certificate for unknown reason".

The server was working fine since November �09 until a month or 2 ago.Sometimes (almost daily now) the machine hangs and shows the front "health led" blinking red.The services do not respond,locally i can see the login screen but when attempt to logon it freezes (the same happens with ssh).2 weeks ago i open a case in HP and the support sugest that the problem is in the X server (??), since then the system starts in runlevel 3 but the problem continues. A week ago open another case, on Tuesday make a BIOS upgrade but today in the morning the server hangs again.
There�s no strange messages in log files but... after the Tuesday hungs (before the upgrade) i can see the error msg below (thanks to the change to console mode):

adding "nohpet" as kernel parameter does not work.
As soon as I enable an AIM account, it becomes disabled for 'Unknown reason'.

I'm pinging a certain website and what happens is that each time the ping process freezes for an unknown reason ca. 10-15 sec then it starts to ping. Note that only this particular domain causes this hanging and Ctrl-c seems to have no effect at all! The domain is niteco. So far I've tried several independent linux systems all with the same result however other non-linux systems ping normally.

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns

I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.
Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.
Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.
I've installed Lucid, and so far the only problem I'm having repeatedly is that my appearance settings aren't saving. Every time I reboot I have to change the visual effects from "none" to "normal", whereupon it searches for drivers and changes the settings. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

this is true when right clicking on desktop (option present but when clicked, new window no longer opens) and,
when going through system / appearance, no new window appears.
I installed audacious and was searching around how to add new themes. I've learned how to do that but the only problem is when i go to file/preferences There is no appearance tab. Anybody know how i can fix this, i really want to add some winamp themes to this thing, or at least be able to change some of the appearance.

How can I make it stay on None?Edit: I just created another user on this pc. After reboot it stays on None for this user, suggesting it's a per-user setting I need to fix, not a system wide one.

Peering into gconf-editor, I noticed that under desktop>gnome>background the picture_filename is the original warty that comes pre-installed on karmic. However, I am not using that BG, instead one that i told the Appearance Preference manager to find and use. Does this app use a symbolic link to refer to the image, or is it elsewhere? Lookin in /usr/share/backgrounds my image does not exist. So what is drawing the BG? Is it nautilus or compiz?

If I go into the screen resolution, I have no choices higher than 800x600. If I restart the system, there is a good chance that the screen resolution will go back to normal. what I can do to fix it?

No matter what theme is set in the "Appearance" dialog, Nautilus shows the bland default GTK theme with the title bars of the theme set in Appearance.I think this is related to an error regarding GConf I saw once, but never again. It flashed so quickly on shutdown that I did not have time to note down what it says. This issue effects the desktop as well
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed a theme called 'elementary' and it said I also needed an iconset for it too.so I tried applying that too.but that just said cant move directory over directory. I searched around and found a "solution" that made things worse.Before I applied the "solution" I had the theme working without the icons set.., the so called solution told me to go to my home and press control+h then go to the .themes directory and delete the theme folder and that's what I did... after that everything stopped working.
I got the iconset working but the theme itself is not showing up on the appearence preferences, the current theme is my previous one.. and when I go to customise theme, then window boder tab.. I see the elementary theme there with a question mark on top of the faded thumbnail,I can't seem to delete it too..
edit: when I select the theme custom it says this theme will not work as intended because the required window manager theme 'elementary' is not installed.
Here is a description of my problem:I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop with the default Ambiance theme. I have my bottom panel deleted and instead use Docky.Sometimes on boot/reboot one of a few things happens.Either:1)My Ambiance theme loads, then...unloads?My top panel and all Nautilus windows turn to a flat gray "theme" as if I guess there are no appearance settings enabled. If I open appearance settings my panel returns to theme without doing anything else, but my Nautilus windows are still out of theme.2)My Docky bar never loads up and I have to start it manually, it then loads/works fine as if nothing is wrong.3)Both problems 1 & 2 combined.
My setup is Ubuntu 10.04 64bit running on an Athlon x2 3.0GHz with 8gig of DDR2 dual channel RAM and a Geforce 9800GTX+ video card. I had the latest factory NVidia driver installed and figured that might be causing the problem. I switched an older release of the NVidia driver last night to see if that fixes anything, but being an intermittent problem only a few days use will tell. I would not use the NVidia drivers at all, but I figured I would not be able to use Docky as it requires compositing to be enabled (which I was under the assumption were under the special effects that I need the NVidia driver for).
