Ubuntu :: Restore Partition With Unknown Filesystem

I recently did a clean install of 11.04 Beta, and I must have done something wrong with the mount points during installation, which resulted in me having a different home folder mount point or something. The old partition on which I have my home folder needed to be mounted manually. I did that once, and then upon reboot, I couldn't access the partition anymore. Disk Utility now shows the partition as "unknown filesystem".
The output of fdisk is as follows (if that helps at all):

On a side note, I tried using TestDisk to restore the partition, but I only created a DD image of the damaged partition, but now I'm stuck, as I'm not sure how to mount it, or if it's possible to retrieve files if I succeed in mounting the image.

I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So before a couple months i download ubuntu 9.10 and i installed it a month later. But my computer used to crash all the time and i couldnt use it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.
When I try to boot to OpenSUSE I get the following error during boot-up: unknown filesystem type 'reiserfs' could not mount root filesystem - exiting to /bin/sh$
This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
having a bit of a problem here. I woke up this morning, and my computer was froze. It does this from time to time, the monitor won't respond and wake up, flashing lights in the keyboard etc. Well anyways, I turned it off, then turned it back on, and it says:

I have a laptop with windows7 and ubuntu installed. When I installed Ubuntu it created 4 partitions (2 for swap and 2 for ubuntu). Yesterday, a friend of mine deleted one of the partitions (swap+linux) because they weren't being used (weren't even mounted) and he thought I could use the free space. I kept on using the laptop but today I had to reboot it. Instead of getting the usual grub menu I got this:

The problem is that it doesn't recognise the commands 'linux', 'boot' or 'initrd'...
I had win7 on my laptop. Before sometime I install Ubuntu 9.10 and it worked fine. Bur later that I resize the partition using third party software. Now when I restart the system it is giving me an error GRUB Loading error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> I am not able to access the harddrive. I am very new to ubuntu.
I have been using ubuntu 9.10 for a month. i have it installed on a 5GB separate partition of a 80 GB hard disk with my XP installed on a C drive(a separate partition ofcourse) then i had to remove it from my PC so i boot my PC with a partition manager cd and directly formatted that partition of 5GB from that software now i am having this error on my boot of PC....

I have tried a lot of commands here on this screen and nothing happens...i want to go to my XP .... and can't loose my XP OS and other data as well on different partitions.....
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and during the upgrade it asked to install a new version of grub or keep the current one. Thinking that I should just upgrade the grub just to make sure that I had the latest version I decided to do it. So I told it the partitions to use the ubuntu, ubuntu swap, vista, and vista recovery.Finished the upgrade and restarted.I tried to boot into both the vista, and vista recovery but I noticed something weird. Grub switched the names, the actual vista install is called recovery, and when you tried to load it, a blinking cursor would appear for a split second and then loop back to grub. If you tried to select the vista recovery now called vista it would just sit at the blinking cursor for infinity. But booting into ubuntu worked.
So I decided to wipe ubuntu and do a fresh install of 10.04. Went through and set up the swap and ext4 partitions at the end of the hard drive(because I would like to expand the windows directory should I ever be able to boot into it). Now when I start up and select vista recovery now called vista it sits at the blinking cursor just as before.
there was ubuntu on my pc operating system but it is strange for me so i wanted to instal windows 7 on my pc. I inserted Window 7 disk and started to install it and i formated Ubuntu but the disk what i was using was damaged and it could not complite the installation and now i dont have any programs in my pc. Problem is that i got another disk but i cant boot anymore my pc, i select drive and stuff and then comes error.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and am having a major issue with it not booting. My PC worked fine yesterday but when I tried to boot this morning I get the error "error: unknown filesystem" and under that I get the "grub rescue>" prompt.
At first I thought this was just a problem with Grub that would be easy fixed so I put in my Ubuntu USB and loaded it up in live mode. But when I try to look at my file system from within the live environment I can't seem to see any of my files.
I have looked at the drive in GParted and my main file system (/dev/sda1) shows up as 'unknown', while the swap partition (/dev/sda5) shows up as it should. I have also looked at the drive with the Disk Utility and the SMART Status says the disk is healthy.
I am really concerned about this as currently the system is totally unable to load, not only that but I am also unable to recover my data from the drive which is my main concern as I havent done a backup for quite some time and I have a lot of python code that I have been working on that I really need to get back.
Has anyone got any idea of what to do and how I might be able to sort this out or at the very least recover all my data. I can't understand why this has happened I have not made any changes to the system recently other than installing the updates that came through yesterday. This is a really urgent issue for me and any help will be very appreciated.
I had dual boot with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 running, and working. In my grub menu on startup I could choose (among things) something called Vista loader. Dont know why, since I installed windows 7 and not vista. Could also choose windows7 and ubuntu, both worked.
Today I accidentally pressed the vista loader, and now I get the following error upon boot: Error unknown filesystem grub rescue
So the next thing I did was download the latest ubuntu and boot from live cd. I followed instructions [url] on how to purge grub2 and reinstall it, and did so with out any problems. However the same error remains when I boot.
I changed the first line of /etc/fstab in an attempt to get rid of an annoying message "mount: unknown filesystem type 'static'". All I did was put a "#" on the first line .... changing the original from:

I just recently decided to install Ubuntu alongside windows 7 64bit. I was working fine until I decided to increase the partition size of the unused space to take up some space of an unused partition I had made earlier. When I tried to reboot windows I got the error - error: unknown fileystem. grub rescue> I have tried a windows repair disc with no results, it cannot find any problem with the startup routine and I have looked at many different tutorials and information about how to restore grub using command from the grub rescue menu. I am experiencing a problem with virtual box 4. Did an install from binary, and everything went ok and virtual box launches, but once I have created the virtual disk and the want to run it, I get an error, and the log says that it has to do with the ext4 filesystem and has a known kernel bug. How does one go about sorting this out. Here with the log from virtual box.

I tried upgrading to 11.04 this morning and after rebooting grub left me at the grub rescue> prompt with the message 'error: unknown filesystem'. I've tried purging and reinstalling grub using a live-cd but no joy.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 lts on three of my schools old computers, they are all old Celeron computers, all basically exactly the same, it installed flawlessly on the first one but on the second after restarting after fresh instillation it boots to an error saying "unknown filesystem, grub rescue>" I've reinstalled 3 times, I've looked for others with the same problem but they are all related to dual booting with windows, I wiped windows, there is mow windows involved

before doing this, my ubuntu partition was /dev/sda7, the swap partition was /dev/sda 6, and the data partition was /dev/sda 7.
I need to examine a hard drive that came from another system running Ubunut Server (not sure what version). I know the drive has LVM on it, so as far as I understand that means the drive will be treated as EXT4 for mounting. I can't boot from the actual disk, but I have used a IDE to USB connector to make a binary copy of the drive, which I've mounted as a loopback device. However, when I try to mount the loopback device properly, I get this:

I tried using -t ext4dev too, but that just gives an unknown filesystem error. The file I've got mounting in /dev/loop0 is a .dd file, created by imaging the drive using dcfldd on the server drive while it was mounted (as /dev/sdb). System I'm working on is running Ubuntu 9.10. All I need is to be able to mount the server drive so I can traverse the file directories, there's a few things I need to check on it. If needed I can dispense with the whole loopback setup and just directly connect the server hard drive again using the IDE to USB cable, but I'd rather not do that; it's imperative that the drive doesn't get altered, or at least as little as possible.
my second partition on sda needs to be wiped out and i want to use dd to restore a backed up filesystem to it. can this be done without using mkfs? i don't want ot use mkfs because it is a ssd and it won't restore the nand to factory condition.
I recently upgrade my armel NAS from etch to squeeze. During the partitioning step of the installation I intentionally left unmounted the data partition (900GB formatted XFS) but after the installation I'm not able to mount it.

So i noticed throught lsmod that I don't have the module for xfs
Tried installing xfsprogs but it didn't helped. So I searched for xfs-modules but seems it doesn't exists for armel architecture. Am I right? What does it means? That XFS is not supported in armel Squeeze? Assumed I can't transfer/backup 900GB of partition, is there a way to convert it on-the-fly to a supported filesystem format?
I installed Kubuntu 10.04 last couple days ago. Yesterday I installed some package software. After reboot, I had problem to login in GUI in Kubuntu. I tried few solutions in web I found, Now It became more worse ! After BIOS - show this error message error : unknown filesystem grub rescue>

I dont actually know what to do, I've been reading some threads on the internet but nothing equal to my case, only people who installed Windows after Linux and lost GRUB. Do I just need a live CD to reinstall GRUB? Can somebody tell what to do?

when checking the /proc/filesystems, i noticed that 'ntfs' is not listed there, several forum suggested i try running 'modprobe ntfs'. If that is not found, you'll need a kernel with ntfs support. i'm so lost, where to i get the modprobe ntfs

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10--it had Windows 7 on the machine before but wiped that off so it is not dual boot.
The upgrade manager prompted me to install about 170MB or so of upgrades. I chose to install everything and then rebooted. Upon rebooting I received an error (sorry but didn't record it).
I rebooted by ctrl-alt-delete and then got the error: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue.
A few days ago I decided to try a linux OS for the first time. Following a how-to advice, I created a ~80gb partition (on a 320 gb sata disk) for Win7 and installed it. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04, chose to make partitions manually, created a primary ext4-partition (right after the one with Win7) for / and a 1024mb swap partition. So now the disk is parted this way: 512 booter - Win7 system, ~ 80gb ntfs - Ubuntu /, 8 gb ext4 - Ubuntu 1 gb swap - file storage, ntfs ~240 gb (created using Win7 bootable disk, but the issue from below started before this).
After the installation the boot loader failed to load any system, giving the error from the topic title. I tried several ways to reinstall/repair/reconfigure grub in the live-CD mode. Some of them didn't change anything, others were not completed because of an update-grub error ("cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)"). Grub version is 1.98b. The disk with Win7 and Ubuntu is treated as hd0 in grub and sdd in Ubuntu ote: even though the thread is marked as SOLVED, the issue is actually not. I have managed to dual-boot Win7 and Ubuntu, but with partition configuration changes
I had windows with ntfs I installed ubuntu. All ok. Gurb with 2 os, can ran windows and ubuntu and can mount ntfs partition in ubuntu I installed debian with lvm over ubuntu partition. I can't mount ntfs partition now, and windows doesn't appears in gurb
I can't active vg because haven't name, but is not lvm, is only ntfs partition Maybe ubuntu puts in lvm and grub? Any idea? If I change with fdisk to ntfs i lose all the information in the partition?
I have windows vista. i tried installed linux-ubuntu 9.10 but not knowing after a point on how to proceed further, i quit half-way. so my partition (14 gb)remained wasted. i tried installing again in a new partition and got it done. from my newly installed lunux, i tried to delete that 14gb partition. and now when i restart my laptop, i get this error :
