General :: Viewsonic Vg920 Monitor Won't Hold Settings In Fedora 12
Jan 28, 2010
I've got two computers, with the mouse, keyboard and monitor connected through a Cybex Switchview switch. When I connect the viewsonic vg920 directly to the linux box, I can set the resolution using the System menu. However when I connect the linux box to the monitor through the switch, linux somehow cannot detect what the monitor is and resets the resolution to a much lower setting. How can I make the monitor settings in Fedora 12 permanent, so that when I connect to the monitor through the switch I keep the higher resolution?

I just bought a 31.5" HDTV and have it connected to my laptop as a monitor. My laptop monitor is cracked and pretty much useless so I would like to be able to keep it turned off and stick with my new monitor. So far, I have managed to accomplish all of this, just one problem, I will need to go through too long a process for every login to set it all up again. I'm hoping someone can help me simplify this and have everything done automatically while Ubuntu is booting or even right after login.
Process:
Code:
$ cvt 1366 768 60
# 1368x768 59.88 Hz (CVT) hsync: 47.79 kHz; pclk: 85.25 MHz
Modeline "1368x768_60.00" 85.25 1368 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync
[code].....

Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.
Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

I have an odd problem since preupgrading from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14.
My power management settings are set to never put the monitor to sleep, yet after a certain amount of time, lo and behold, the Fedora box has gone blank and I have to enter my user information and password to get back to my gnome session.
In the power management preferences I have "never" selected for both putting the computer or display to sleep.
In the screensaver preferences "Lock Screen After" is *not* checked. (And if I click "advanced" I also note that "Power Management Enabled" is also *not* checked).
I'd just as soon not have to "log on" to this machine every time I'm away from it for a while.

I use another kernel on my eeepc which is specially adjusted for the Hardware Needs of this little machine.
The source of this kernel is: [url]
But since today I have the problem that the updater would like to update the vanilla kernel from the Fedora Repos.
Even though there aren't any versions of this vanilla kernel already installed. So I don't know what causes this mistake and would like to prevent this kernel from auto-updating.

I'm trying to install 11.3 in a Viewsonic VNB101 notebook.I've been trying a long time now, 11.3 was still in ms6, as I recall. I tried the dd, the imagewriter, kiwi, unetbootin, Win32DiskImager and maybe something more. Lately I'm trying PXE booting, but I cant manage anything. I even gave a shoot to the new grub2 advertised feature, of booting an iso from the same machine. No luck. Maybe its time to mention that I had already successfully installed fedora and now the kubuntu 10.04, which is running ok, but its not suse. The weirdest thing is that I can have a bootable pendrive that looks fine. My other two desktop pc's, boot it and they are willing to install or run live.
I've tried the full dvd (586) version, of course after isohybrid was ran. I also tried many of the factory isos. But the one I'm obsessed with, is openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso. All of them where definately checksumed. What the heck is going wrong with this notebook? Bios version is InsydeH20 D0.05T45.55.03, the setup utility in rev. 3.5. Cpu is Intel Atom cpu n280 A friend of mine, installed 11.3 successfully with an external dvd-rom drive, but he lives pretty far and I cant afford buying one of my own. I'm a user of OpenSuse since version 6.3. It is used as my primary OS all this time, on my desktop machines. I wont give up.

How do I recursively generate a text file which has a list of all files on my server which contain a specific string anywhere in the files?
I know the following command can be used to replace a string recursively
find /var/www -type f -print0 | xargs -0 sed -i 's/old string/new string/g'
I do not want to replace the string, I just want a list of all files which contain the string.

I have two monitors. One on my laptop, and one hooked into the VGA port on the laptop. I want to use these as an extended desktop.
I can set everything up correctly, but after I reboot, or shutdown, all of those settings have to be manually put in again. This is consistent.
how to get these settings to be permanent?

I am trying to view my pc on my new flat screen but am unsure of the settings. I am using ubuntu 10.10. I have been trying (and on ocassion succesfully, but never really understood what I have done) to view my pc through the monitor option under preferences. Selecting the different monitor size but always find my external monitor (ie TV) is to the left, right above or under the screen I see on my PC. Also I am unable to hear my PC through the TV. I should say this is a good quality flat screen and all I am unsure of are the correct settings to use my TV as an external monitor.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on an Intel D510MO motherboard as a low-end surfing computer. The monitor, a Viewsonic VA1926w, has a maximum resolution of 1440x900. However, the monitor preferences shows a maximum of 1024x768 only. How can I bring up the resolution to 1440x900? The screen seems sort of flattened because of the incorrect settings. I think the video card (built in) of the motherboard is an Intel 3150.

Is there a way to make ncftp hold the connection open longer than the default? a ping every 10 sec or something? I feel like after I push a change up to the server before I can verify everything is working as expected and get back into ncftp the connection is closed by the remote host.

I'm running openSUSE 11.3 64 bit KDE 4 standardI have two monitors attached, running simultaneously, nicely, all is well. But when I reboot I have to set them up again because the settings don't stick/endure through a reboot. The GUI configurator that I use is at Menu --> Config Desktop --> General --> Display. How do I save the underlying settings and re-invoke them at boot time, perhaps from the CLI? Or some quick process that will do the job.

The default Gnome desktop now has a 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz which fit my monitor but is a little too big (or at least the font sizes are too small). I would like to switch to a lower resolution. I don't find anywhere in Yast how to configure the monitor settings. No more sax2, no more /etc/X11/xorg.conf? What does replace them?
I mean, where can I set which monitor I"m using (Targa TM4896-1), what are the screen resolutions supported, if I want hardware 3D acceleration (or not), if I want to use dualhead (Matrox G400 DH)?

I have an external monitor at work, but not at home. I take my laptop home and when I come back the settings are off. My monitor is above my laptop, so I have to rearrage displays and save every time its plugged in. Isn't there a system file or something somewhere that I can write to and save the current state as the default?

I have a relative who made the mistake of changing the resolution of her display to something that her monitor does not support. The monitor no longer displays anything. If she connects another monitor to the computer, the monitor will work properly. If she boots off the live CD, her current monitor works properly. If she swaps out her graphics card with another with the current monitor, there is no display.Apparently, there is a remembered setting for the resolution of her particular monitor. Is there a way that it can be reset back to the default?

I am running Wheezy 7.9 and recently created a file, in xorg.conf.d, to set the monitor configuration because the EDID is not always read from the monitor. Everything works great but when the EDID is not read the monitor name, as shown in System Settings>Displays, shows as Unknown. I have the vendor info and modelname in the config file but they do not show in the Display GUI. Is there some variable that I can set in order to get a good monitor name displayed?
Probably should include some more information. I am using the Gnome Classic desktop and gdm manager. Here is the monitor conf file that I put in /etc/X11/xorg,conf.d
Code: Select allSection "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "VSC"
ModelName "VA912b"
DisplaySize 376 301
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0

I have a maverick box plugged into two monitors, using the open source radeon driver and randr. Each monitor has a top and bottom gnome panel, with various widgets in each. There is no /etc/xorg.conf. The Problem: If I 1) remove both monitors to plug the box into my HDTV, or 2) connect to the X server remotely from a laptop, the panels all get shoved onto the one display. Do you have any advice on how I might specify different gnome panel 'profiles' for the different uses of this computer?

So I have a fresh updated install of 10.10 on dell dimension 4550
The pc connects to my monitor through a dlink KVM switch so I can switch back and forth between computers.
When I reboot my monitor settings disapear and everything is real real large.
If i disconnect from the KVM and connect Ubuntu directly to the monitor and detect monitor it will allow me to adjust settings so everything looks normal. Until I reboot and I am back to the same huge icons again. If I try to go back and adjust monitor settings there are only 2 settings options because it does not see my monitor through the kvm switch again.
