Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable Secondary Monitor Quickly Other Than Loading Up Nvidia-settings And Disabling The Monitor Every Time?

Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.
Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

I need to find out a command to enable and disable a secondary monitor using the Nvidia X Server. I've got a monitor attached to my laptop that I don't use all the time and would like to just have a launcher to switch between "twinview" and "disabled" quickly rather than having to go through the menus. It's physical position is vertically above the primary monitor so I have to put in a custom position every time I enable it.

I have persistent video tearing my second monitor (Mitsubushi HDTV). I have tried everything that was suggested with some improvement. I have no issue with tearing if I add the following to my xorg.conf

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 + Nvidia driver 180.44 on my Dell Latitude E6400 (1440x900) with NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M. I have the G2410 1920x1080 external monitor. The monitor is connected via VGA. I am very pleased to have the monitor running at full resolution. However, the settings don't stay intact after rebooting.
If I have the monitor connected and turn on the the laptop, only the laptop screen is active. Then, I press Fn + F8 twice to switch to the external monitor which is always reset to 1440x900. After logging in I open Nvidia settings and switch the external monitor resolution to auto. There is a warning about Meta modes and I do auto fix. Then compositing is disabled, so I open system settings, turn off then turn back on desktop effect. Also, if I want to switch back to the laptop display, it stays stuck at 1920x1080 on the laptop.
Is there any way to set this up so it is automatically detected when the external monitor is plugged in and runs at the correct resolution? With my old M1330 and Intel X3100 graphics card, it would do this and was very convenient switching back and forth between the laptop display and external monitor.

just setup suse 11.3 , put on the Nvidia 19.29-22.1 drivers via yast , no kms is set in inetd , nomodeset on grub boot line etc... Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

I installed the nvidia proprietary drivers with click-install and everything perfect, I have desktop effects working but the problem is that when you open the config. screen settings to make sure everything was really good, I get to screen unknown April.
The maximum resolution is the correct 1440 * 900 for 19 "but the refresh rate by not recognizing the monitor down to 50hz me and gives me the option to 60hz as it was before installing the nvidia drivers.
How can I fix the display settings?

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook Pro 5,5. Everything is running fine with some tweaks. Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

I have 2 laptops. Currently I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on one of them. I have Windoze XP installed on the 2nd laptop. I would like to use my second laptop as my secondary monitor since I hardly use Windoze. Is there a way we can use a laptop as a secondary monitor with Ubuntu installed on the first machine (again a laptop in my case).

I just switch from windows to use ubuntu 10.04. I am still learning how to set things in ubuntu.
One of the problem is that I can't set my secondary (external) display to my favorite one. I have 22'' screen (max 1680x1050) but I love to set it to 1280x800.

I am trying to run flash video on my secondary monitor IE my 32" lcd tv which I have hooked up via DVI. my problem is when I bring the window over to the secondary monitor, which I would like to watch whatever on while browsing, and try to put it in full screen it defaults to the primary monitor which is my laptop. can anyone tell me how to change the defualt full screen to the secondary monitor and not the primary?

Every time I open an app or window in Kubuntu 10.10, they open up on the secondary monitor. I would like them to open up on the main screen because I don't always want to use my second screen. Is there a setting I'm missing?

I'm currently running a three-monitor setup, two of the monitors being connected to an NVIDIA card, and the third being connected to the motherboard's onboard ATI adapter. This works, and it actually works quite well, but after installing the nvidia-current drivers (using the GNOME dialog), I am unable to get any video acceleration going. The GLX module doesn't seem to want to load, and while I'm actually quite impressed with the video performance I'm getting with the open-source drivers, I'd really like to have the OpenGL capability, as it does make things look prettier.
Relevant configs and logs are below.
I should clarify - I don't care about the 3rd monitor on the ATI adapter; I'm only concerned with getting OpenGL working on the two on the NVIDIA - if that's possible, which it may not be...

I have an NVIDIA 9800 GTX. I have 2 DELL monitors connect to this card, one is a 24" and the other is 21".
I am unable to use Xinerama mode with Unity, because for some reason after logging in, I get no desktop interface, only background wallpaper, and I have to force reboot.
How can I setup dual monitors in Ubuntu using Unity properly? Note that I do NOT want to use TwinView, since this results in dead space around the smaller monitor.

I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy.An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.
nfortunately, I can't get any output on the external monitor. It does work under Ubuntu, which installed the 180 series binary driver. (Going to an earlier driver is an option, but I want to understand the problem.) Bottom line, I want to work under Debian.As far as I know, nVidia's proprietary driver doesn't support xrandr. I have an Acer 1200X with an Nvidia 8200 graphics GPU integrated on the motherboard. I have an HDMI and VGA output. I have downloaded the Nvidia graphics driver using envyNG and the old fashioned way. I have tried configuring the monitors 15 ways from Sunday in the configuration and I cannot for the life of me get dual monitors to work.
When I go into configuration with the Nvidia wizzard it blanks like its going to work then just stays black with the mouse cursor. I also cannot save as I get a "parsing" error. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and have even tried using envyNG to get the monitors to work on twinview... NOTHING Hope someone can help!
My dad who is a Linux nut came over to help and he left 3 hours later because were tempted to chuck the computer out the window...I need to figure this out as this is going to be my work computer and I need dual screens.

I have openSUSE 11.2 KDE with NVIDIA drivers. I have a TV on the left and a monitor on the right. In the Nvidia drivers this has also been setup as stated. The TV is on position 0:0 and the monitor is in position 1920:0. The monitor has been ticked in the drivers as the primary screen.
My problem is that all application open on the secondary screen and not the primary screen (monitor) as I expect. How to the OS/drivers that will ensure that application always open on the monitor situated on the right are welcome.

I recently purchased a cheap computer to use for everyday tasks. It came pre-loaded with Windows 7. The monitor I am using is a Vizio VX20L. It's native resolution is 1366X768. I have no problem with the screen resolution in Windows 7 but in Ubuntu, I am having some issues. I have the propriatary Nvidia driver installed in Ubuntu but for some reason I cannot get the screen resolution right. I am currently using a resolution of 1360x768 and the right part of my desktop is not on the screen.
I have tried to adjust the screen size using the monitor settings, but I still cannot get the whole screen to show up. If I set the resolution to Auto in the NVIDIA X Server Settings, it defaults to 1280X1024 and I can see my whole desktop, but it is streeeeetched. Here is some relevant information pertaining to my system:
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04
Integrated Video chip is NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE
The driver I'm using is NVIDIA accelerated graphic driver (version current)[Recommended]

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

I have been using ubuntu for quite a long time, and for the first time, I am now unable to set nvidia drivers to work. I have just install ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on an AMD 64 athlong X2 with a GEForce 6500 nvidia card.
The only reason I need the proprietary drivers is to use two monitors.
I am going crazy, I have tested everything I have found on the web. I have tried all the nvidia drivers version, I have tried envyng, ... but nvidia do not work!!
I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!
Here is my xorg.conf file in which I have tried to use nv driver to set dual monitor. X fails to load and it says that screen 0 is deleted, that devices are found but there are no matches in the config file. Any clue?

I have two monitors. One on my laptop, and one hooked into the VGA port on the laptop. I want to use these as an extended desktop.
I can set everything up correctly, but after I reboot, or shutdown, all of those settings have to be manually put in again. This is consistent.

I have an external monitor at work, but not at home. I take my laptop home and when I come back the settings are off. My monitor is above my laptop, so I have to rearrage displays and save every time its plugged in. Isn't there a system file or something somewhere that I can write to and save the current state as the default?
