Why is the info in the (BASH_Profile) file different than (echo $Path). Is the Profile file just there to modify another file and not actually hold information?

Relatively new to Linux, but I'm trying to grasp the proper way to modify the sudoers file. As an example, what would I have to modify in /etc/sudoers to allow a user (say 'user1' for the example) to be able to add/remove software through yum? I'm aware of the fact that I need to use visudo and how to use the vi editor. I've Googled this topic and while I've found a number of pages on the topic, I never see many examples.

Now I want to change aaaa=x into some other entry.
I want to modify a file like /etc/gdm/custom.conf from the shell or a script.

But the idea is that I can add a line to a section and it check if the section is defined, (add the definition if not), the property is defined, let it undefine (erase the line), (and delete the section header if there is no property defined), etc...
I didn't find anything except gconftool-2 but it do not explain how to modify other files. (there is a shema file there).
there isn't a program/script to achieve this, but can easyly be made for every config file, If someone do something like that, with a little database of which markup use each file, it could become really popular.
I am in the process of setting up an Asterisk server with Broadvoice services. I am having issues with making outbound calls and Broadvoice suggests I modify the /etc/hosts file in order to add their proxy server IP address and name. How big should an LVM volume be to hold a single 32GB file? I thought 33GB would be enough, but apparently not. A volume has run out of space. There are 2 identical volumes holding identical sized files (kvm virtual hard drives in raw format). One (ic030) is showing zero free space and one is showing 97% full. I guess the discrepancy is caused by journalling, directory structure information etc. Possibly also sparseness. How do I calculate the worst-case maximum required LVM volume size? i.e. assuming no sprseness and maximum journal size etc. Here's some info from the file system. (I have removed other volumes form the listings.) The volumes are formatted with ext3.

When I view a file in Linux with the 'less' command, I often only get a ":" prompt in the bottom left corner. There's no clue about how long the file will be, or at which location I am currently. When reading manpages with 'man', there's a file title and line number in that corner. And once I hit the end of the file, there's even a percentage shown. I've learned about 'less -m' but it's not that powerful. So what does 'man' differently from 'less'? They appear to be the same viewing programme, except for that file information difference.

I've got two computers, with the mouse, keyboard and monitor connected through a Cybex Switchview switch. When I connect the viewsonic vg920 directly to the linux box, I can set the resolution using the System menu. However when I connect the linux box to the monitor through the switch, linux somehow cannot detect what the monitor is and resets the resolution to a much lower setting. How can I make the monitor settings in Fedora 12 permanent, so that when I connect to the monitor through the switch I keep the higher resolution?

Is there a way to make ncftp hold the connection open longer than the default? a ping every 10 sec or something? I feel like after I push a change up to the server before I can verify everything is working as expected and get back into ncftp the connection is closed by the remote host.
