General :: Echo Password To SU - PPPD Call Idea
Feb 25, 2011I have to run "pppd call idea" command from root shell every time to connect to internet from mobile. Now I want a script so that I just run it to connect. Something like :

echo "password" --stdin | su -
pppd call idea
But its showing error that "standard in must be a tty". Why is this. Using CentOS 5.5

Sep 18, 2010i constantly find myself opening and closing terminals (which, in turn, i lose output on the terminal window and what not..). i use the terminal screenlet app and i really enjoy that, but sometimes find it cumbersome to have to constantly minimize the current window to go to my desktop with the built in terminal screenlet. i had an idea for a panel applet that will do the following: it will act like the drawer applet, but when you click the button, a terminal window will un-roll and pop up with the past output from previous commands/work. you then can click the button again and have it roll back into the panel to wait for the next use, etc. has anything like this been done already for terminals? also, if not for terminals, has anything like this been done for any application? i ask because if i can get the previous source code, it will be much easier to modify it for terminal usage. (im a grad student and don't have much time to devote to a completely new formulation of code haha).

Oct 18, 2009It seem like a good idea to leave the computer along when it is updating. Because if for some reason I still using the computer, it might interrupt the updating process.(e.g. update manager freeze, or corrupt some file) I remember I run into this problem quite a few times back in FC6, but did not have problem on F10 and F11(merging from preview?) until the day before yesterday. I was tried to downloading a relative large file updating system and running 2 folding at home in the terminal at the same time (ram usage at the time was around 300+/512). Then disaster strike. The hard drive spin like crazy with large cpu I/O pending(or wait time?). The problem reoccur during the boot up and login after the update.

I saw this message in F10 before, and had been told it might have something to do with the kernel. But I suspect the problem is source from corrupted file rather than kernel this time around, since back then the problem will go away after a successful file system check. Unfortunately, it does not work this time. So I have no choice to reinstall the system. Therefore, I am thinking if it is really a bad ideal to let the computer muti-tasking during the update? Because it may rise the possibility of update failure or system files corruption. I really do not like LVM, is there a way to get around it? The installer from live usb does not allow me to customize partition during the installing....
Ubuntu One :: 8.04 - Evolution Mail Sync Idea
May 24, 2010I am wondering if I set the /home/user/.evolution folder to synchronise with ubuntu one on my eee, and then when I update the desktop remove the /.evolution folder and replace it with the one synchronised with ubuntu one would all my setting and messages be copied as well or not? And no I can use Imap as I use that dreaded thing known as hotmail! My desktop is running 8.04 but is due an upgrade soon so I can test my idea out!

I thought that I would insert the Windows 7 HD image each time I go visit my brother but do any of you have other solutions .. workaround? I mean stable solution, i've heard that Optimus is no where near what Windows 7 can do with this technology Optimus workaround idea for playing through HDMI.

Jun 17, 2011I have this USB modem P300U(SIM600 chip based) which works fine under wind@ws because it has it's own driver, but the clever seller told me that it worked under Linux as well. It was with Redhat 8 but I couldn't get redhat 8 to download. And until now absolutely false.

CentOS 5 :: Modem AT Commands To Internal Modem?
May 20, 2010I have a Centos 5.4 server running kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5PAE. It has an internal modem, and I need to be able to issue AT commands from a script to the modem. I need to simply dial a number and hang up. The relevant piece of my script is:

With an external modem, this works no problem. With an INTERNAL modem, the call never goes out. I fired up minicom to make sure the modem was working correctly, and if I issue those AT commands from within minicom, everything works great.
While minicom was running, I noticed a peculiar fact: WHILE minicom is running, the script works from the command line, and I can see all the AT commands and OK's in minicom, (minicom acts as a monitor). When I exit minicom, the script stops working. It appears minicom is creating a bridge between the com port and the modem itself. So, what is minicom doing that I'm unaware of?
The server's sole function is to run asterisk as a voicemail server (avaya wanted well into 6 figure territory to implement this....). This script is to dial an avaya FAC to turn the voicemail message lights on and off on the end users' phones.

General :: Executing AT Commands On USB Modem?
Aug 13, 2010I have a USB modem on a Debian install that I want to be able to use AT commands to diagnose, specifically for obtaining signal strength (RSSI). I know the command for this is AT+CSQ but I cannot seem to get the interface for issuing AT commands to work.
The modem is using /dev/ttyACM0 and when I try to use minicom, I type in AT commands and nothing is echoed to the screen (Yes, echo is turned on). Maybe I just don't know how to use minicom correctly.

May 18, 2011I am new to Linux and using Linux Mint 11 RC after trying Ubuntu, and Fedora. I am not new to computing having owned and written software for Amiga, and owned and built different Windows machines.
I have a E627 Emachine Laptop with an AMD TF-20 processor that runs a Athros Communications AR8132 Fast Ethernet Card rev c0 and the network controller is a Broadcom BGM 4312 802.11 b/g LPPHU rev 01. I have 2 megs of memory and this is the machine that I put the Linux Mint os on.
For days I have been trying to get the wireless to work. I have read everything I could find on the net and know that this machine has a problem with this. I also know that the drivers in Mint don't work even though they are supposed to. I was using Mint 10 which is the stable version and it had the same problem as did Ubuntu which I know is almost the same as Mint and Fedora.
I have decided after many hours that the way to go might be to install one of those thumb drives with a wireless modem built in, but can't find an appropriate Linux one that will work with my setup. Does anyone know if there is such a thing?

I did a test mailx command and it goes out of the queue but never gets to my yahoo mail.
I am using a cable modem.
I can go out to the Internet so I know I have a valid connection.
I am guessing I need to set something up so the cable company will relay my mail for me.
I know i can pull pop mail down and sen it using my account.
Do I need to configure something in the sendmail.cf file to do this?
