General :: No Connection With Wireless Modem

Jan 29, 2010

I have Linux Linpus-Lite on my Acer Aspire One. Internet worked fine until my grandson did heaven knows what and I now have no connection with my wireless modem. The light indicating that the computer is getting a signal is not on, but I know the modem is working because my other computer is getting it loud and clear. It seems as though the wireless receiver on the computer has been disabled. How can I get a signal again?

General :: USB Modem - Trying To Get The Wireless To Work

May 18, 2011

I am new to Linux and using Linux Mint 11 RC after trying Ubuntu, and Fedora. I am not new to computing having owned and written software for Amiga, and owned and built different Windows machines.

I have a E627 Emachine Laptop with an AMD TF-20 processor that runs a Athros Communications AR8132 Fast Ethernet Card rev c0 and the network controller is a Broadcom BGM 4312 802.11 b/g LPPHU rev 01. I have 2 megs of memory and this is the machine that I put the Linux Mint os on.

For days I have been trying to get the wireless to work. I have read everything I could find on the net and know that this machine has a problem with this. I also know that the drivers in Mint don't work even though they are supposed to. I was using Mint 10 which is the stable version and it had the same problem as did Ubuntu which I know is almost the same as Mint and Fedora.

I have decided after many hours that the way to go might be to install one of those thumb drives with a wireless modem built in, but can't find an appropriate Linux one that will work with my setup. Does anyone know if there is such a thing?

General :: PuppyOS Cannot Find My Wireless Modem

Feb 5, 2011

I'm running Lucid Puppy 5.2 off a live-CD. Wireless router works fine on Windows 7, but Puppy says it doesn't see any interfaces(?). I've tried dozens of the drivers that it has listed, none seem to find the wireless.

Wireless router is a Realtex RTC8188CE. Loading the Puppy RealTek drivers (there are three of them) didn't work.

I see there's an option for using the windows drivers, but I A) don't understand how to find them through appropriate functions on Puppy and B) it says it is looking for .int (I think) files, and the 'drivers' that I could find were .sys.

I'm sure its apparent I'm an extreme novice here. I've used Ubuntu for years, this is my first try at Puppy. Everything is working fine except the internet, which, predictably, is the primary thing I want to use this computer to do.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Hs2300 HSDPA - Wireless Modem ?

Apr 25, 2010

I have just moved over from MS to Linux and so far I am pretty happy (couple of frustrations along the way, but nothing I could not sort out so far).

Except this little bit that has me bogged down. I am trying to get my HS2300 HSDPA wireless modem to work, but I am a little stuck here.

I found a post that I should get the HP-WMI module to load. That was a post on an older kernel and this guy mentioned that is should be included in newer versions of the kernel.

Modprobe did not deliver any results, however an "lsmod |grep wmi" delivered the following:

Obviously I need to look for hp_wmi, but so far I cannot get anything to work.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection

Mar 28, 2010

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.

Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:

1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.

2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).

3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Networking :: 3G Modem On Debian Try To Share Connection With Lan

Mar 21, 2010

Generally I don't like just asking stuff but just can't crack this one. I got a debian machine. My internet connection is on a 3g usb modem. It connects perfectly. Then I downloaded DHCP 3 and then configured it so I got 172.16.0.0 network address with gateway on 172.16.0.1 (set by DHCP) 172.16.0.1 is also the eth0 address and is assigned as fixed by DHCP. With the modem not connected the other PC connects no prob, gets the default gateway and get assigned an ip by DHCP and there is a proper connection with APACHE serving pages. So it is all grand. Where my prob comes in is that I am not able to get traffic from the modem through to the other PC, and at times the modem would not be used as default connection with eth0 up. Restarting the modem fix this but then also drop the assigned gateway address. They are connected directly via crossover cable. The modem is setup as ppp0 according to ifconfig and then ethernet as eth0 and I tried some masquerading allowing all traffic through but does not seem to do the trick.

General :: No Connection With Wireless BT Homehub?

Apr 12, 2011

I have just dual booted a friends Vista PC with fedora core 14. Unfortunately he needs a wireless connection to the internet vi a BT homehub 2.

I had thought this should just work straight off!

Can anyone give me a pointer to a step by step guide to do this (on FC14 preferably).

On Vista, I can get info using "ipconfig /all" at command line that gives stuff like default gateway, dhcp server, and so on. It's talking to the hub via a REALTEK8187B wireless USB (802.11g)

I suppose I have to add the hub via sys->Pref->Network_Connections->Wireless->Add.

If so, where do I ger the info to put in?

Fedora Networking :: F12: No DSL Connection \ Can't Connect To AT&T/Bellsouth's Dsl Modem?

Dec 8, 2009

I'm running F12 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I don't have any problems connecting to eth0 or wlan0 when I'm at work or when connecting to a variety of cable modems, but for some reason I can't connect to AT&T/Bellsouth's dsl modem at my house (can't connect directly, much less through my DI-524 D-Link wifi).Does anyone have any idea why? I've been through every setting I can think of and I've stayed on the phone with techsupport for AT&T and physically watched as they've pinged and reset my modem, so signal into the house/modem is good....and I can hit the modem's IP and go through all of the configuration settings and everything from Bellsouth says that I'm connected and online, but when I attempt to go to another website like google or yahoo or fedora.com, I get a message telling me "Server at ******** not found."After spending 2.5 hours on the phone last night with tech support, I came into the office tonight and hooked right up to TruVista's (cable) network.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Seem To Get A Wired Connection Direct From The Modem?

Jun 9, 2010

I have been experiencing extensive networking problems with 10.04 and I was wondering what options there are for downgrading to a different (hopefully more stable) release. I cannot seem to get a wired connection direct from the modem. I don't know if its just me but I feel an operating system that can't do something simple like this (without extensive terminal codes and file edits etc) is not for me. Here are my system specs:

3.06 GHz E6600 Core 2 Duo
2x2GB GSKILL DDR2
MSI G41M4-F (Realtek Ethernet)
500 GB Seagate 7200

I also have a PCI NIC card Intel PWLA8391GTBLK GIGABIT 1PC I just want to connect to the internet in a hassle free manner. Is there a release of ubuntu that I can "downgrade" to that will make networking hassle free? I have previously used 8.04 on a different machine with no problems. Is downgrading from 10.04 trivial? I currently do not have any important files as this is a new build and file backup is not an issue. Is there anything I should keep in mind or be aware of before downgrading?

General :: At What Point Does Wireless Connection Occur

Mar 3, 2010

I have just purchased my first Linux PC - up to now I have always rolled my own so to speak. It is a little Dell Latitude 2100 which I got a good deal on through the outlet store - a refurb but it looks new. Ubuntu 9.04. It has built in wireless and I have gotten it to talk to my D-Link router although only with WEP and not yet WPA - that will come later.

When is the wireless connection supposed to occur? If I reboot the PC and watch for it to connect (using ping from another machine on the network) it does not appear until I login to it. It remains on the network after I logout(?) Is this normal? I am used to hard wired machines which come up on the network before a user logs in. Is there something I need to change in the network connection settings?

General :: Can't Get Ubuntu 10.10 To Recognize Wireless Connection

Jan 12, 2011

My wireless internet works fine on Windows but not on Ubuntu 10.10 From researching the problem, the best advice I have found was to install ndiswrapper, locate the .inf file and install it through that. I have done so and that seems to have done nothing. Then I heard that you were supposed to run the command:

Code:

modprobe ndiswrapper

All that did was give me an error message about how that action was prohibited (or some such). I'm wondering if this is possible to fix on Ubuntu or if I will have to find something else. Also, the wireless driver I am trying to use is bcmwl6 which funnily enough seemed to have a package on the boot cd to install it.

That package didn't work and just gave me and error message telling me there was a programming error in it.
I'm sorry I wasn't particularly detailed with the messages I was getting, this is because I am currently on Windows and finding those again would mean rebooting and losing this post. I can get them though if they are particularly needed. I know this seems to be a commonish problem but I haven't found a solution (yet) that has worked for me.
