Aug 11, 2010Whenever I run for instants skype, facebook, and a video call it seems like my computer can't handle it and it constantly freezes. I'm not sure if I have the wrong settings or what; but it never did this when I had windows installed on this pc. I would love to keep ubuntu but I can't handle it freezing every 5 minutes. I'm kind of computer retarded when it comes to this ha so sorry. I am on 10.4 9.10 froze just as much though

Aug 4, 2010I inadvertently blocked a web page and get the following message when I try to open it using Firefox.
"The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. * This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies."
I can change users and access the web page or change computers. No other websites were affected. Is there a way in Ubuntu or Gnome to unblock a website to accept cookies?

Nov 8, 2010I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Chromium v.7 + Ubuntu 10.04 + Sun Java 6 + Webcam + Facebook + Flash 10 = non-functional
All of those items listed above are potential points of failure in this situation, and any help narrowing them down would be fantastic. I am simply trying to enable webcame support directly through Facebooks website.
Forum searches and the usual googling turn up few posts related to this specific equation. Two of the major suggestions include:
1) Installing the Sun (I refuse to say oracle sob)-provided Java implementation instead of the OpenJDK normally installed in Ubuntu. And yes, after installing it, I did update all my default supports to use the sun commands over the openjdk.
2) Somehow enabling Facebook as a permitted site to access my webcam using Flash settings.
I have not been able to explore option 2 because I cannot find a way to adjust the Flash settings in chromium 7.

Aug 18, 2010Every time when I visit facebook site my system crashes, everything that I have opened just closes and my machine returns to a login screen. This only happens when visiting facebook, and I can't relate this to administrative restrictions because I can visit facebook from other computers within the same network.
I am using Scientific Linux 5.4.

Apr 17, 2009I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.
I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?
General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer
Jun 28, 2011I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.
