Software :: LILO Boots New Install; GRUB Doesn't?

I have one install (Slack 12.2) on /dev/sda11, and GRUB (GNU GRUB 0.97) boots it without a problem. I just installed a new Slack 13.1 on /dev/sda1, and GRUB fails to boot it as follows:Quote:

grub> root(hd0,0)
> Filesystem id type ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1

Slackware :: Grub/ Grub2/ Lilo - Can't Install Any Of Them Properly?

Nov 15, 2010

I usually install grub straight away after an install but this time it hasnt worked for some reason after installing 13.1 on a new lappy. I have tried grub, grub2 (from sbo) and lilo; nothing I install into MBR will boot my slackware installation, I have to use the boot USB stick every time.

grub-legacy would be my preferred one so ill ask for help specifically with that. This is what im doing so far -

Hardware :: Can't Install Boot Loader - Both Grub And Lilo Failed / Resolve This?

Jan 17, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721. Recently I replaced Windows Vista Home Edition (32 bit) with Slackware Linux 13.

Lilo wouldn't work, when I turned on the computer it printed "Li" and then 20 lines of 090909... and then the computer would hang up. So I just used my Slackware-boot-flashdrive-thing that I created during installation to boot my computer and told myself that I would fix it later.

Also, when I installed, cfdisk (or it might have been sfdisk) complained that /dev/sda did not contain a valid MS-DOS partition table. fdisk still worked, so I used it to create a new table, and cfdisk worked fine and the installation went along normally.

I reinstalled Slackware about two days later (I realized that I had installed the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit). Lilo still didn't work.

I thought it might be something wrong with the Slackware DVD, so I downloaded and attempted to install about 4 different distributions. None of the CDs would work. The computer would start up, Linux would start to load, and the computer would freeze.

Xubuntu was the only distro I had that I could get to install. Halfway through the installation, (Surprise!) I got an error, something like "Package Grub failed to install, you will not be able to boot your new operating system".

The rest of the install went fine, so I restarted my computer and tried to use another one of my CDs to boot Xubuntu. I got the error "/dev/sda does not contain a valid partition table", and later "ext4-fs: checksum failed on dev sda at sector...", and "please specify a valid partition for root=". I am absolutely positive that I entered the correct partition, I triple checked and entered other partition names to make sure.

I'd also like to add that the computer makes horrible crunching noises when it starts up and when I do stuff like press keys. So is something seriously wrong with my hardware, or is there another explanation for all of this? Because I really don't want to have to try to repair the computer and can't pay to have it repaired.

OpenSUSE Install :: System Boots To Grub Instead Of Kernel?

Apr 14, 2010

I installed Fedora 13 on a separate partition and it deleted all of my openSUSE entries in grub. Or the boot menu, whichever is correct. From another thread, I found these commands and tried it:

Code:

grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

hd0,3 contained one of my openSUSE installs. Everything went well and grub accepted all of these commands except quit. So I used esc and rebooted. The reboot brought up the grub shell again. I could find no way to boot anything. Then I used the 'repair installation' option from the 11.2 dvd and installed a new boot loader for /dev/sda2 which contains 11.2.

This was successful, so I went to the YaST bootloader tool and added /dev/sda3 (Milestone 5) and /dev/sda4 (Fedora) and rebooted. But these two partitions still boot into grub instead of loading the correct kernel.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Fresh Install / Boots Into Grub CLI And Just Sits There

May 22, 2011

My setup: a work laptop that has a corporate Win7 image, and to which I have added a few partitions to try various linux distributions. The MBR is governed by Lilo from the Slackware 13.37 installation in /dev/sda5. The MBR boots no kernel image directly, it only chainloads the boot sectors of partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda5, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7. The latter three are formatted ext4.The Win7 boot mechanism traditionally resides in /dev/sda1, and the linux distros are required to install their boot machines into their respective partitions.

What I am trying to say is, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 into /dev/sda7, and told the grub installer the same thing: install yourself into the boot sector of /dev/sda7. Kudos btw for the Ubuntu installer, it comes across as a very professional piece of software.

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

After installing, Grub was still installed on my system, but since it is supposed to boot an OS that's no longer on the hard drive by default, it drops to the Grub Rescue prompt every time I boot.

How can I boot Slackware from grub, or get lilo to boot my system instead of grub?

Software :: Reinstalling Lilo To Kill A GRUB?

Nov 5, 2009

I have 2 drives, the first has Slackware 13.0 and FreeBSD 7.2. The second has Windows 7. Lilo configured to boot all three, no issues. Perfect. The first drive has 100GB of free space after FreeBSD and today I decided to install Open Solaris on that free space. The install failed, as in Solaris displayed such a message. I did read the Solaris install docs, etc. And it did mention no to install unless it preceded any Linux Swap partitions. There are, I did, but that's not my issue now.

After rebooting, it amazingly loaded FreeBSD by default. No Slackware. So I booted the slackware DVD, ran fdisk and made Slackware the default boot partition, yada yada. Now when it rebooted it gave a little message down in the left hand corner of the screen like "RRG B" highlighted in a red box. Now pressing enter will cause Windows 7 to boot from the second disk. I mounted the slackware partition from the DVD and am there now. Will just running lilo again put everything back to normal? Apparently Solaris left behind a piece of that ill behaved GRUB! (No flames!!!) :-) How do I make it go away?

Debian Configuration :: LILO As A Boot Loader From Grub

Aug 26, 2015

I am thinking about maybe trying "LILO" [URL] ....

For my boot loader, from what I have read it sounds even more tempting.

I am totally sick of GRUB, even though it is what seems to be the most popular, and is what normally is used as the "default" when any linux system is installed, that is what the install ISO's use, but anyway, that is another topic, over the years, "grub failing", has been a problem for me , many times.

I saw this (From LILO to GRUB Howto).

Fedora Installation :: GRUB/LILO: Getting The Location Of The Boot Partition?

Feb 13, 2009

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:

Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?

General :: LILO/GRUB - Dual Boot Half Broken

Jun 26, 2010

I've run Debian on my laptop for quite some time now with no problems. I installed Slack to a new partition created in the free space of my hard drive, and I thik this was my mistake: I let Slack automatically configure the MBR with lilo (can't remember - I should stop operating on the MBR at 4 AM.) Now Slack runs just fine, but upon bootup I would like to be able to boot either Debian or Slack, but instead I just have a Slack splash and the only option is to press enter to boot Slack.

Code:

I believe sda1 is the root directory of my Debian install.

Code:

In the above table, sda10 is the swap I created for Slack and sda3 is the root directory for Slack. All other partitions were there before (my initial Debian install).

Thus my partitions are apparently intact and visible by the MBR (is it correct that the MBR holds the list of partitions on a disk?) but for some reason I don't have the option to boot Debian at all - just Slack.

I have a feeling this is a LILO/GRUB issue, but I don't know where to start.

EDIT: more poking around seems to reveal that it is the configuration of LILO that is the problem. Observe the following output:

Code:

at first i tried to install my ati driver, but my x1800 is not supported anymore, so i decided to run xconfsetup to use the default ati driver. After that i have been in the xorg.conf generated by the setup and it seem they got the right driver, it say radeon in the device section. another problem i experience is that everytime i lod KDE my default resolution suck, and when i open the control panel and click on display, everything goes right.

the last problem is more serious, when i order my computer to shutdown either by command line or with the logout button, the screen goes black and nothing happen at all. Its sad beccause so far everything else seem to work fine, i installed my network card and my sound card properly.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 (64bits) Boots Sometimes But Most Often It Doesn't

Sep 23, 2010

The problem i have is that after sucessfully installing Ubuntu 10.04 (64bits) when i start my PC and i get to grub2 and select Ubuntu it will get stuck at a blank screen with only an "_" flickering on the top of the screen. At first i thought "Hey, maybe it just takes a while to boot" but after letting it sit there for about 20 minutes and nothing happening i decided to restart my PC. And then the same thing happened like 5 times. BUT on the 6th try it booted sucessfully! And everything was working perfectly but as soon as i restarted my PC i would encounter the same problem.

Details I should probably mention that i had the exact same problen on the install process. I tried with a CD i had burned the image on and it would show me install options (Try and install, install, etc.) But when i selected either one of those i would get the "_" flickering and nothing ever happening. Then i tried it with a DVD thinking that the CD was the issue. Same thing. After that i tried with a USB drive and i would get the same exact problem, but on the retry on the USB drive the planets aligned in such a way that i actually got the Virtual Ubuntu loaded from my USB drive.

So it installed sucessfully and when i restarted it i got to GRUB and selected Linux and the "_" would start showing and nothing ever happens. On the <random number> of restarts it actually launched and it picked up my audio, video cards, other NTFS drives, etc. But when i restarted i would get the problem again. I even went trough the whole install process AGAIN (getting it to read from the USB flash drive, starting on Ubuntu) and still no consistent results. Though on the second install it didn't pick up my audio hardware nor my other NTFS drives until the second restart where i was able to use Ubuntu normally. I even upgraded what it told me to upgrade. (now i have two "different" versions of ubuntu on grub, each with it's own safe mode only different by a .24 and a .25 on their names) and right after upgrading and restarting it booted immediately. But after that i'm getting the same issue over and over again.

Ubuntu :: Change Which Grub Boots?

Jul 5, 2011

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 with Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 and a 10.04 LTS minimal install. All booting fine with 10.10 grub at boot. I installed Xubuntu 11.04 on another partition, all went great BUT ... I was in a bit of a rush and when I got back to the machine and rebooted for the first time, 11.04 had installed a grub and taken control of boot. That is fine, everything boots okay, but I really didn't want this.

10.10 is my production install (10.04 just never played nice with this machine or I'd be using that, naturally) and is stable, tweaked to perfection, and staying where it is; 10.04 and 11.04 are 'experimental' for me and likely to be replaced or tweaked into oblivion anytime. Therefore, I want 10.10 to control grub, as it was doing before, which gives me the freedom to explore the other two installs without fear of bricking the machine.

How can I now take control away from the 11.04 grub and give it back to the 10.10 install at boot?
