Ubuntu :: Ophcrack Not Converting ASCI Password In To Normal Text?
Feb 7, 2011
I manage to boot with ophcrack 2.3.1 and we were able to see the files, luckilly. Now, we just want to retrieve his passwor to get back into the system. So far I got up to the part where is actually produces the file and this is what is contained in the file:

To convert a text file to postscript format is easy with groff:groff -Tps file >file.ps But what if the input file is utf-8 (with non English characters in it)? How can you specify the encoding to groff or do you have to pipe the file through some other command?

I'm trying to change the restrictions to some normal text files and their result is not what is expected.
For example, when I put:
chmod 000 testfile.txt
on a file that is
-rwxrwxrwx,
it instead becomes
-r--r--r--.
It doesn't matter whether I do it with a root or the owner of the file, the result is the same.
Also, putting
chmod u-rwx testfile
results in the file becoming, again,
-r--r--r--.
Also, some doesn't have any effect, such as
chmod o-r testfile.
Even if I do this, the result is the same -rwxrwxrwx.

I need to manually convert an string ( like with echo ) to a DES crypt format to be inserted inside a /etc/shadow file, does anybody knows how can I do that?
Maybe there are some little tool that could handle that operation, well.. I don't know, hope someone can give me a hint on that.

I was recently surprised by this SCIM stuff that seems to screw around with my normal text input. I try to be curious and approach my issues with an open mind, so before I try to remove SCIM, I want to know what the hell it's supposed to do.but it's not obvious to me

Strange thing happend two days ago. I just wanted to reboot my computer and now I'm no longer able to boot o0. My system is runnig with a full encryption with luks/cryptsetup. I'm using a passphrase to unlock my first partition and it will unlock the others by itself. So far so good. But now it doesnt work anymore... I'm not sure what I did before, but what I know, I didn't change anything! about cryptsetup. I did only a little "update" with the recommended packages from the repositories (guess only 4-5 updated)
I already checked with live cd and same thing there. Not able to unlock any device (what seems strange to me, cause there are 4 of them and all corrupted at the same time...?)
I always get the error message: unlock failed, bad password or options? (on boot) Command failed: No key available with this passphrase (live cd)
First thing I did was checking wheter all modules are loaded:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
sha256_generic 11580 0

So I have forgotten my password, like a moron, and have been trying to reset/recover it.
I have found the plethora of sites giving instructions on how to reset my password, such as psychocats.net
So have gotten into the root shell and this is what I type.
ls /home
(gives me the name of my account)
passwd (my account here)
unknown user (account name here)
I have also tried doing the editing the boot kernel.
I add this: rw init=/bin/bash
Once I restart I get the root@(none) command prompt. Then I type passwd (username here) and get back ' unknown user

I've used linux for basic things in the past but I'm afraid I need to recompile a kernel and I don't even know where to get started. There's so much information on google and I'm not familiar with the terminology to even know how to effectively search for what I'm looking for.
Basically, I'm loading Ophcrack via TFTP/PXE, but I want to be able to mount one of the shares on my samba server instead of it looking for a /tables/ folder on the current device. I already know how to modify the launch.sh script to get it to do what I want, however I'm stuck on how to mount a samba share through CIFS.
Code:
modprobe mount.cifs
returns that the module is not loaded or is not found. Is there a way to add mount.cifs?
Code:
su
root
mkdir -p /mnt/tables/
mount -t cifs //10.10.2.3/pxeboot/ophcrack/tables/XP/ /mnt/tables/
Doesn't work either. I'm kinda stuck.

It's a pretty weird issue I'm having, when I need to provide access for a command in terminal IE: something using sudo, it just doesn't accept text. I thought it might be my keyboard at first (g15) but I tried copying and pasting the password into there and it just wouldn't do anything except for remain blank

I have a headless server running Centos and I often login in remotely to administer it. I have passwordless login and sometimes run commands remotely via ssh from a client machine. I've tried to shut the server remotely but have come across a small problem. Here is the output of the command I use to shutdown :Code:unclec@linux-desktop $ ssh centos 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now 'PASSWORD : 123ABCAs passwordless login is set up I do not need to enter a password to ssh BUT as I am running sudo on the server I am asked to enter my centos unclec password and this is shown in clear text on my local machine terminal. Is there a way to prevent this or should I edit the sudoers file on centos so it does not ask me to enter the password when "sudoing" ?

The author (somewhere on these Ubuntu forums directed........ Ctrl + Alt + F1 which I thought was going to be the "Terminal" but nothing similar. I have about a half dozen different names/passwords for Ubuntu but none will work to log in. How to get out of this text console and back to Ubuntu GUI? And, how to read my lost LogIn name and password for this "Text Console"?

I have set up my box to use ldap and I enter a users details in YaST and for the sake of simplicity I make the password 123456 The user gets created on the ldap server and everything seems Ok However I can't log in as that user and if I go to the ldap browser the password is in plain text Instead of saying {ssha}i345y9345yr34 or whatever is says {exop}123456

Since we switched our server to Squeeze, I'm receiving emails from the cron about a mysql error (...can't use locks with log tables). But this is not the issue I want to talk about here. The issue is that since the executed command is: /usr/bin/mysqlcheck -uroot -pmypassword --all-databases --check-only-changed --silent which is a command that was automatically added to the cron by the mysql package (I believe), the password is sent in clear text in the email's subject. In my sense, this is a serious security issue (sending root password in email subject...)
I don't know at what level it should be corrected, but it seems to me like it should be corrected in the Debian distrib, shouldn't it ?
And for now, how can I hide the password in the emails I receive ?

Is there a simple text editor for Linux that will let you color or highlight text on demand? Something like gedit or leafpad with color? I know I can probably do this with vi or emacs, but I'm looking for something simple, need not be feature rich.

The new feature in Gimp 2.7 that attaches basic text formatting options (bold, italicunderline, strike-through) to the active text box is either buggy or just bad design. The text edit buttons are actually being placed on top of the text box (which contains text) instead of off to the side, and that is causing me to not be able to see the text.See screenshot for example:GIMP version: 2.7.1Am I doing something wrong or are others experiencing this too?

I put a text file on my desktop and added a couple lines of text with gedit. File type shows text/plain. Double-click opens the file in gedit which is what I want. I'm using the file to temporarily hold some snips of code that I copy from file to file, but when I copy some html into the file and save it, now file properties show it's text/html and a double-click opens the file in firefox, which isn't what I want. Is there some way to keep the file type from changing itself?

i am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline
Code:
variable=$(cat file.txt)
The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:
Code:
for line in $variable
do
echo $line
# Other commands
done
how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0
