I'm using slackware 13.1 now (dual boot with win7) and recently, my slack oftenly freeze on it's own while i use GUI session (KDE4) i can't use ctrl+alt+del or prtsc+alt+REISUB it's just like my notebook absolutely freeze.
View 11 RepliesI have been using vim for years without problem but today I have met one weird scenario which I can't solve it after troubleshoot for the whole day and google around. This happen to my 2 machine at home which both installed with Slackware 13.1..I just got my laptop done setup with Slackware 13.1 and I ssh from my laptop to my desktop that have vim installed. I use one of my laptop virtual console to do the ssh login to that desktop.
And using vim in that laptop virtual console and Konsole itself, all works fine. The problem only occur when I ssh into the desktop using a virtual console.It seems like if I supply the vim specifically a .vimrc, it will work fine. It seems like it's taking forever to find the .vimrc file. But if I remove that .vimrc, it will also freeze. If I create a new user in that desktop and ssh again and then do vim, it will also freeze.Any one face this strange problem before ? I know I can still use Konsole to ssh and do vim, but I wish to solve this and since vim is been there for so long, I think this problem will most likely faced by someone before.
hypothetically speaking, can i write a script in which a telnet session is opened and then some more commands are forwarded to that session?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have debian squeeze server at work, acting as gateway, and home computer with debian sid (amd64). OpenVPN is working on server ecure connections from internet. So my home computer is connected to work server via openvpn almost 24/7. Some days ago i faced strange problem - when i make ssh session from home to work, via openvpn connection, i can login to work server, but after any command on remote console i have blank screen and nothing happening on it. Only exit is pressing Enter ~ . In server's auth log are messages about session opening and closing only.When i ssh to server from local network at workplace - via putty or native ssh - it works without any problems. I can do anything.But from home I can only login.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter locking my GUI session, if I type my password incorrectly when I come to unlock it, the system often (not always) seems to hang for a long time, with the text "Checking..." displayed. The length of time can be many minutes.The system is not actually frozen - if I hit CTL+ALT+F6 I can log on to a console session, from which I can see a tty7 process (i.e. the GUI session) using the 'ps' command. Sometimes the only way I can recover is to kill this process, upon which a new GUI session starts up, but this is undesirable as I lose any open applications.

I try to login in kdm, I always come back to the login....
I try this with default runlevel 3 and an .xinitrc with "ck-launch-session startkde" .. works without problems, so I switch back to default runlevel 4, now i can login and only get the error "Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session..."

I have installed Alien Bob's KDE4.4 packages and have eveything almost in working order. However I am getting a nepomuk warning that says that the sesame2 database is not working or something to that effect. Has anyone else come across this problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install, and so far I haven't noticed any serious problems with KDE4, although I can't find what I'm looking for, usually. I don't use my laptop much though. I also did a clean install on another system to 13.0 about the same time. X won't start on that system, it can't figure out the hardware I guess.
So I've just been using the command line. I don't really need a graphical interface on that system anyway. Right now I'm using the motherboard graphics support, but I will probably install a video card in a PCI-E slot and try X again. The system that I just upgraded from 12.2 (LUKS encrypted volumes and LVM) to 13.0 tonight has a number of problems. This was an upgrade, not a clean install. Based on my experience so far on this system, KDE4 does not seem to be ready for prime time. It is buggy, the menu system is more difficult to navigate than KDE3, and there are some apps I just can't find (e.g., Kedit). Overall it seems to have fewer apps than KDE3. Either that or they are well hidden well enough that I can't find them. My first impression was that KDE4 had clean lines and a modern appearance.......
I've set my configuration for xterm in .Xdefaults and it works in Xfce but Kde4 seems to ignore it.

I'm really satisfied with it and wish to keep it, but there's one thing bugging me : I can't write to my NTFS USB drives.
To be precise, I can write as much as I want to existing files, but I can't add nor delete files nor directories.
Worse, root isn't allowed either, even in runlevel 1 when mounted by hand (mount -t ntfs /dev/sde1 /mnt/foo).
Did I miss something to configure among the dependencies of KDE 4.6 ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery KDE4 application seems to take over the sound card. If I'm playing a song in Amarok and launch Dragon Player, the song stops. If I'm playing a song in an xterm using "mplayer -ao alsa" and then launch Dragon Player, the song stops. Most annoying of all, if I'm playing music in _anything_ and then a notification sounds in Kopete, the music stops.However, if I launch two xterms and play two different MP3s by running "mplayer -ao alsa" in each one, both songs play. So software mixing is working with my sound card.
This made me wonder if KDE is outputting music through OSS instead of ALSA. Well, KDE's audio backend is set to xine, and xine is outputting through ALSA. Under System Settings->Multimedia->Audio Ouput, the only devices I see.
I once had wicd running at KDE startup as I was just playing around with it. The problem is I now have turned off rc.wicd and don't want to use wicd any more. Every time I start KDE it still asks for the root password which I cancel and it then tells me it can't connect to wicd's dbus. This is getting really annoying as I have been trawling through my ~ looking for the setting that starts this up. I just want wicd turning off completely and this message to go away.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed 13.1 last night and started playing with KDE4.4.3. I'm talking about Konqueror as a file manager only here. My default view is to have the folder tree in the left pane, with a detailed view pane on the right. In KDE3, I use the "Tree List View".In KDE3, I had my mouse set to "double-click to open files and folders". However, in KDE3's konqueror, you could still navigate the folder tree with a single click. One click on a folder in the left pane would show the folder's contents in the right pane, or a double click in the left pane would expand the tree to show subdirectories. I could still single-click on files in the right pane to highlight them without opening them.
In KDE4's konqueror, it requires a double-click to do anything with the folders, either to display in the right pane or expand the tree. It's a lot more effort just to get around in the folder tree. I found the Mouse setting in the System Settings that changes overall single-click/double-click behavior. If it's on single-click, it's easier to navigate the folder tree but then I end up opening files I don't want to just by trying to highlight them with a click.I dug through Konqueror's settings in both KDE3 and KDE4 but couldn't find what gave me behavior I liked in KDE3 or how to duplicate it in KDE4. In KDE3, the system setting is on double-click, but there doesn't seem to be a konqueror-specific mouse setting to customize it. Anyone else notice this? Is this hard-coded into konqueror, and it changed from 3 to 4?
how to remove the '.desktop' suffix appended to my icons? I unintentionally installed the 64-bit S13.1 when I wanted the 32-bit version - anybody notice the misleading text around the hole on the DVD? The 'Slackware 13.1 (amd64)' side is the 32-bit and the 'Slackware 13.1 (1386)' side is actually the 64-bit version. It fooled me, anyway, and after finding out how limited software choice was I spat the dummy and went back to 32 :/ But...with Desktop Settings>Activity set to 'Folder View' I now have this unwanted suffix added to my icons. Also, if I'm in my home directory via Dolphin and I create new folders they also appear out on the desktop!

This happens as both normal user and root. Googling around seems to suggest this error is tied to a Kauth/PolicuKit/polkit problem, which aren;t provided yet in Slackware as far as I am aware.
All my panels and desktop and wallpaper disappeared. I don't know how to get them back without restarting KDE4. I have too many things open. I can't right click the desktop > appearance settings and I don't know what to input into alt+F2 to get that system settings menu. Any ideas?

then if I reboot, the sound address becomes hw:0.0It's really annoying, because every time I have to re-run xmms and mplayer setup to get any sound!Also, if any program is playing audio (like xmms), other programs cannot play audio at the same time.ie: if I'm listening music with xmms then I try opening some video with mplayer or firefox/flash, I get no audio on this video....What's the deal with kde phonon? Any kde app(dolphin, device notifier...) can't see my internal drive with ntfs and any connected flash drive. I've thought that this is problem with missing dependecies or hal but 'lshal -m' shows messages when J connect flash drive so i don't know where the problem is. I've installed all required and recommended and some optional packages from URL...and it has no effect. Does anybody know what i have to do to make it work.

It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.
I have 13.37 installed and am thinking of changing to it but I have had two system freezes with it. This never happens on 13.0. Once was when I was selecting reboot from kde and another time I was closing another program - I forget which.

Hardware - Compaq615, video - radeon hd 3200 After clean installation of 13.37 x64, proprietary ati driver, multilib. xfce.
All was o.k., video rendering was direct etc., etc. then i rebooted, and system freeze at startx. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace not working, hard reset needed. I tried xorgconfig, Xorg -configure, aticinfig --initial, deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf with no result at all. /var/log/Xorg.0.log empty. When i do startx from root - all is o.k, writing from root now.
This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:

I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.
i don't know if this is a slackware related issue but i have the following problem.I'm running a slackware64-current on my system. For my private data I'm using a QNAP NAS (Some ARM CPU with linux kernel 2.6.22), the file shares provided by NFS. I mount them withmount -t nfs 192.168.0.2:/Public /mnt/qnapWorks fine, no problems.But now, if i try to copy some large files ( > 1GiB) to the NAS share, sometimes the systems completely freezes during the copy process. I have to do a hard reset to bring the system back to work
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Slackware 13.37. After the install - when executing startx for the first time, the xfce desktop freezes when its almost (?) fully loaded.
While loading I can move mouse and if I hit caps_lock the lamp at the keyboard turns on and off.
In the setup I choosed to use vesa - allthoug I afterr that even tried to boot from lilo into vga-mode.
I am, a litle rusty after have been brainwashed through Ubuntu for a few years (sigh) - so I really am not sure which config-file I should edit, and xorg.conf seems to be empty.
I've been trying to install Slackware on my Intel Celeron 750, but it keeps freezing during the installation.
It usually freezes during a screen that seems to show a bunch of coordinates and processes. The last one looks like this:

I have installed Slackware 13.1 without a problem and have a working wired ethernet connection. However I need to set up wireless but each time I try to do this using wicd I have a total system crash during the start up screens at the very last line before the welcome line appears.
Nothing works to resolve it, and I need to press and hold the start button and restart. I have checked the md5sum, installed the software again several times but the same happens each time which results in me having to reinstall.
I have installed wicd using slackpkg update, then slackpkg install wicd.
I have also tried downloading wicd from the slackware /extras folder and installing it on its own. Either way the same happens.
I have tried various manual approaches to setting up wireless following various links but again without success.
I now have a clean install again but am not wanting the same to happen.
Can anyone suggest what I might need to do?
I am using an intel Pentium 4, 2.53 ghz, 512Mb ram, GeForce4 MX 440.
