Slackware :: Intel Celeron 750 Installation Freeze?
Nov 1, 2010
I've been trying to install Slackware on my Intel Celeron 750, but it keeps freezing during the installation.
It usually freezes during a screen that seems to show a bunch of coordinates and processes. The last one looks like this:
Code:
[<c10035be>] kernel_thread_helper+0x6/1x10

On my 2 year old laptop I have an Intel Celeron Processor (The one made in June something of 2008) and last night I finally decided to tear it apart. My reasoning was, that I am going to buy a new laptop soon (I want a 64 bit system ) and lo and behold, my celeron processor has 2 cores on the chip itself. I ran several software tests on it in Linux (mostly just profiling and etc.) then I ran a full diagnostic on it and turns out that the second core was never used in any of it. So I looked over it through a magnifying glass and found a pin that was blocking a section from passing anything to this other core. I pulled the pin out and popped my processor in my laptop. Windows refused to boot at first except into Safe Mode because of a hardware change. It was there that my PC was re-evaluated and while previously I had a 3.5 out of 5.0 according to Vista, I know have a 4.1/5.0 thus Aero now was enabled. I then tried something crazy, I popped in the Arch64 net-install disk and VIOLA!!! It loaded and installed Arch64 successfully. Thus, I converted what was a 32 bit processor into a now 64 bit processor by (carefully) removing a pin. After doing research it seems other people found this out too and am wondering to myself, if Intel created this cheap of a 64bit processor, why didn't they market it like that and/or use this as their low-end 64 bit processor? It's all very fishy to me and I really don't know what to make of it.
As an update, I have re-soldered the pin on and Windows still sees the 2nd core. Arch64 however refuses to boot because it's trying to boot 64bit instructions on a 32bit processor again. It seems that since Windows saw that it was there, it has loaded a new driver (some weird "Intel Blah blah blah" [didn't write it down and don't feel like rebooting, sorry] ) that wasn't loaded before. It's still running Vista 32bit (NOT going to upgrade), but it still sees that the other core is there.

I purchased a macbook (for cheap) without a hard drive and decided to go with Ubuntu 10.10 on my new drive.
This laptop has serious overheating issues. I installed the sensor applet and the fans are not coming on, even when the core temp exceeds 167(f). The base of the laptop becomes hot enough to fry an egg on.
I'd like to find a way to make the fans come on in an automated fashion (without having to do it at the command line each time I want them to come on). I'd even be happy with them on all the time if that will resolve the issue, as the laptop overheats until shut down / freeze every time I use it.

I have 13.37 installed and am thinking of changing to it but I have had two system freezes with it. This never happens on 13.0. Once was when I was selecting reboot from kde and another time I was closing another program - I forget which.
I have this in kdm log and xorg.log

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts server on my Intel "fakeraid" (software raid) (2x250 sata). To test my RAID 1 I turned off one HD and start the system. The first screen (Intel software screen) show Status = Degraded, but the system starts normally with just one HD.Then I turned off the system and turned on the HD again, so the first screen (Intel software screen) shows Status = Rebuild. If I enter in the software raid panel the folowing message is showed: "Volumes with "Rebuild" status will be rebuilt within the operating system"The system starts normally... but this message status stays permanently even I restart the system again

I have been using vim for years without problem but today I have met one weird scenario which I can't solve it after troubleshoot for the whole day and google around. This happen to my 2 machine at home which both installed with Slackware 13.1..I just got my laptop done setup with Slackware 13.1 and I ssh from my laptop to my desktop that have vim installed. I use one of my laptop virtual console to do the ssh login to that desktop.
And using vim in that laptop virtual console and Konsole itself, all works fine. The problem only occur when I ssh into the desktop using a virtual console. It seems like if I supply the vim specifically a .vimrc, it will work fine. It seems like it's taking forever to find the .vimrc file. But if I remove that .vimrc, it will also freeze. If I create a new user in that desktop and ssh again and then do vim, it will also freeze.Any one face this strange problem before ? I know I can still use Konsole to ssh and do vim, but I wish to solve this and since vim is been there for so long, I think this problem will most likely faced by someone before.

i don't know if this is a slackware related issue but i have the following problem.I'm running a slackware64-current on my system. For my private data I'm using a QNAP NAS (Some ARM CPU with linux kernel 2.6.22), the file shares provided by NFS. I mount them withmount -t nfs 192.168.0.2:/Public /mnt/qnapWorks fine, no problems. But now, if i try to copy some large files ( > 1GiB) to the NAS share, sometimes the systems completely freezes during the copy process. I have to do a hard reset to bring the system back to work

I have just installed Slackware 13.37. After the install - when executing startx for the first time, the xfce desktop freezes when its almost (?) fully loaded.
While loading I can move mouse and if I hit caps_lock the lamp at the keyboard turns on and off.
In the setup I choosed to use vesa - allthoug I afterr that even tried to boot from lilo into vga-mode.
I am, a litle rusty after have been brainwashed through Ubuntu for a few years (sigh) - so I really am not sure which config-file I should edit, and xorg.conf seems to be empty.

I have installed Slackware 13.1 without a problem and have a working wired ethernet connection. However I need to set up wireless but each time I try to do this using wicd I have a total system crash during the start up screens at the very last line before the welcome line appears.
Nothing works to resolve it, and I need to press and hold the start button and restart. I have checked the md5sum, installed the software again several times but the same happens each time which results in me having to reinstall.
I have installed wicd using slackpkg update, then slackpkg install wicd.
I have also tried downloading wicd from the slackware /extras folder and installing it on its own. Either way the same happens.
I have tried various manual approaches to setting up wireless following various links but again without success.
I now have a clean install again but am not wanting the same to happen.
Can anyone suggest what I might need to do?
I am using an intel Pentium 4, 2.53 ghz, 512Mb ram, GeForce4 MX 440.

It's a single core processor but is 64-bit capable according to Intel specs. You can buy Dells with 64-bit Windows pre-installed on computers with these chips, but does Ubuntu 64-bit specifically require two or more cores?

I have a question about the easiest/lightest Linux distro (or a better solution to my need)
Here is the Gist:
I want to set up a linux box on a Celeron 1.8 Ghz with a Gig of Ram for the sole purpose of transcoding FLAC to MP3 (also I like to Tinker). I will be accessing the linux box via latop so once it's up and runnign i won't need X or anything Background: I have a freenas server in my basement hard wired to my network. I was able to cofigure Transmission to handle DLing my torrents of Grateful Dead shows.
Usage: I run seperate "media" PC to my stereo in the living room which is connetcted to the network via Wireless G, which is part of the reason I set up freenas to do my DLing. I have and love to death iTunes and my iPhone. I love the Grateful Dead. these two loves cause me to commit the ultimate crime and convert the lovely FLAC Grateful Dead shoes from etree.org to MP3, I convert at 256k though so I'm not THAT bad. the "media" pc is a long in the tooth Athlon XP 1800+ with a gig of DDR ram and win XP pro. It can't handle Transcoding FLAC to MP3 at 256 while performing any other duty such as playing music through my nice stereo.
Need:
I am going to setup a seperate PC to handle the encoding duties. The FLACs are DL'ed to the NAS server, the MP3's will end up living on the Media PC (think iTunes coverflow) I have several ~2ghz single core processor systems laying around as well as enough winXP licenses to just setup an XP machine to run winamp to convert FLAC to MP3 for me, however I realize this is the worst possible way to accomplish what I want done.[URL]..

Unfortunately, I've encountered a disaster the likes of which I've never seen before:Yesterday, in slackware 13.1, while using firefox, the window would no longer move or resize, and I could no longer click on things in that window. While this happens, the icons in xfce4 panel no longer acknowledge that the mouse is rolling over them, so I can't launch terminal from a panel, etc.; however I am still able to right click on desktop and open terminal and other apps that way.Since it was high time to upgrade to 13.37, and since I was experiencing weirdness, I decided to do a clean install: I actually repartitioned my drive, and reformatted the partitions (all xfs, and after backing up my data, of course)...
I don't know if that's significant, or not. there seems to be some lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about my logitech mouse.way too complicated to write by hand.I will log out and back on... sometimes that frees up other windows. Then I'll add the Xorg.0.log.

Yes, I was all excited when I plugged in an old dusty PC and found it still alive with a 32 gig hard drive & 260 Megs of RAM with an open slot for more memory, fit for my first Linux system. Then I navigated to device manager and found it was powered by a celeron, which was kind of a bummer.Anyway, can I get by with this setup? I'd like to use the slackware distribution, and my main purpose is to learn to administer a LAN, starting w/ 2 local clients, & a server that also runs Apache.

I think it's the HDA Intel anyway. In alsaconf it comes up with, 'hda-intel Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller', and I select that one. When I do, 'aplay /home/emor/sample.wav' it says it's playing but I don't here any audio. I've tried various configurations on both the alsamixer and the graphical XFCE sound mixer, and neither have really done anything. [URL]...

I've got a Laptop with Intel video chipset. I've got a full slackware 13.37 installation and I'm using the huge-smp kernel all though it's not recommended. But I don't think the issue is kernel related. The problem is that it detects that there is a monitor connected to the s-video connector, but there is no picture on the screen. It doesn't matter what mode I use, but ideally I want cloning.
What happens when I use KDE and krandertray (or system-configuration for that matter) is that I can choose resolution and everything but no picture shows up on the TV. When I press the "Identify monitor" (Or something) button both the "1 TV1" and "2 LVDS1" shows up on the same monitor (laptop). That is weird.
Has anyone experienced anything similar or could point me in some direction as to what could be done?(I haven't had the chance to test modifications to xorg.conf quite yet, but I guess that should work. However, I think it's worth it to get rid of this bug)

I've been using it since it was put on current and have been having X crash on me repeatedly or getting a black screen from which I can only recover by a hard reboot. This is happening under a couple of different WMs without compositing (so this isn't the same issue that I was having with KDE and xscreensaver).
I'm using the i915 driver with stock 2.6.37.6, but I also tried a 2.6.38.2 kernel but had the same problem with both.
Here's a backtrace (for what it is worth):
Code:

I upgraded to -current last night hoping to improve my Intel 845G graphics controllers functioning in X, I've had to use the vesa driver for stability. The upgrade was completed but KDE seems as slow as ever. Here's some snippets from Xorg.0.log:
X.Org X Server 1.7.5
Release Date: 2010-02-16
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Slackware 13.1 Slackware Linux Project
Current Operating System: Linux speedy 2.6.33-smp #2 SMP Sat Feb 27 20:12:16 CST 2010 i686
code....
It seems I'm still using the vesa driver, any ideas on why the intel isn't being used and how to fix it?

I upgraded one of my laptops from 13.0 to current yesterday. I has an intel graphics card:
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
After all the package upgrading, removing obsolete packages, running lilo etc, I rebooted and I was really taken by surprise. Apparently, this certain intel graphics card doesn't work right with KMS. The boot process starts, I get to see the two tux twins and a few lines of boot messages, but as soon as KMS kicks in, everything goes completely blank. It doesn't crash or freeze or anything, the boot process continues, but it's all blank.
What's completely weird is that I have another laptop, which reports exactly the same graphics card, but KMS works fine there with current!
Anyway, I did some google search and I found that it's a common problem. There was a suggestion to remove any vga=... lines from lilo.conf, but that didn't help at all. Adding nomodeset to my boot options, disabled KMS, and I was able to boot to init 3, just like in 13.0. The problem was that then, it wasn't possible to launch X, because the intel driver that is included in current requires KMS to work!
So, after trying out a few different versions of the intel driver, I found that anything from 2.8.x and down wouldn't compile and that anything after and including 2.10.x require KMS. The only versions that would work are 2.9.0 and 2.9.1, which seem to have an identical effect here. They both work, but I have artifacts using my favorite mouse cursor theme, I get a black box instead of the mouse cursor. Not a big deal and choosing another theme fixed that too.
What I'm thinking is that probably more people will have the same problem and nothing is more frustrating than a completely blank screen. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep the 2.9.x versions of the driver in /extra. That and perhaps also add a note in the UPGRADE docs about adding nomodeset if you have an intel graphics card and you get a blank screen.
