General :: Serial Input Read Into A Character App?

Oct 27, 2009

I have a character app running on a Linux server with a telnet thin client. This app requires 3 input values that I would like to be filled in from a scale indicator that is connected via serial to the PC running this app. I feel like this is doable but not sure how. The app is running in Progress 10.1B. Currently I can see the 3 values coming from the serial port with hyperterminal but I do not want to have to rekey into the app.

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0

in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but

cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

I have a minilinux that I being working on, the problem now is that the serial ports doesn't seem to work (I have 4 serial ports). They don't write or read.

I run the command setserial g /dev/ttySx and it says that his IRQ are 3 or 4 (3 for ttyS0 and ttyS2 , 4 for ttyS1 and ttyS4)but when I run the command: dmesg | grep ttyS the IRQs are 0 for ALL my serial ports could be this the reason why my serial ports arent working right??? And if it is how can I solve the problem??

Server :: No Input On Serial Console?

Oct 7, 2010

I've got a home server running ubuntu 10.0.4. It have no monitor or keyboard. So I want to access it from a serial console. (I use SSH currently but if something goes wrong, I need to be able to do something... so serial console seems a fine thing). OK, so on the server, I tell grub to output everything on ttyS0 and opened a getty on ttyS0. On the client side (Laptop running Ubuntu 10.0.4 with pl2303 USB to Serial adapter) I use Minicom.

Home server restart:I see grub menu, linux kernel messages, login prompt. But, I can't do anything:In grub or at the login prompt, no key press is recognized by the server.I've got write permission to /dev/ttyUSB0. I tried a different getty (mgetty)with no success.I stopped the getty on ttyS0 on the server. And run minicom.

From the server's minicom, if I type something, it appear on the client screen. From the client's minicom, if I type something, some garbage appear on the server screen :(One of this things for each char typed). If I short-circuit pin 2 and 3 of the client serial port, it echoed what I type. The two serial ports are connected with a nullmodem cable. (seems to be a full handshaking cable). Of course, same serial port config for both minicom, grub and getty. Hope I'm understandable enough. (English not my primary language). Can somebody help me make this *$*#! serial console working right ? I'm on it for 10 hours now with no success...

Edit : I nearly forgot to tell you I had to update the standard ubuntu kernel to 2.6.34-020634rc1-generic because there was a bug in the pl2303 driver in the stock kernel (2.6.32-25-generic) which prevented me from doing anything (even receiving).

Programming :: Read X Bytes From Serial Port?

I am trying to write some code that interfaces with an AVR over a serial port. Basically I send a command then read the output which is 6 bytes. I need to receive all 6 bytes before the program continues. Is there a way to do this? If I use read() it returns -1 unless I add a delay before reading the port. Is there a way to get it to read the 6 bytes as soon as they arrive? In python you simply say how many bytes you want and the max time you are willing to wait which seems a whole lot easier than read

Programming :: Debian Serial Port Read() Return Wrong Data?

Jul 6, 2010

I am implementing a simple serial protocol where my ARM9 board, running Linux is communicating to a slave peripheral board. The Master sends a 12 byte data stream and the peripheral board returns status in a 23 byte response. The serial port is opened in raw mode. It works perfectly on 44 reads; however, on the 45 read the data returned from the read() is incorrect. I've framed what's being sent on an oscope and it is correct. The coincidence is that 23 x 44 = 1012. It's as though the receive buffer is 1K and when I go past the boundary I get bad data. The read following the bad one is good again.I've tried flushing the buffer before reading but get the same result. Here's the port initialization code:

Code:
int initport(int fd)

Later in the program, these variables are put into an equation, and then the terminal spits out the answer. Now I have to have the program read all of the lines from a text file, which is in this format, assign the variables.

Programming :: Read Multiple Input With Bash?

May 7, 2010

As I'm starting to learn bash scripting I'm trying to automatize some tasks I usually perform. I have a notification mail I need to send several times a day. It has this structure:

Quote:

Dear user,
blah blah blah blah

You need to contact the following people:

[code]...

To replace "user", I found this:

Code:

read -p "Please enter username: " username
echo "Dear $username,"

Which probe to be very useful with other simple notifications like this. But I don't know how to manage the email addresses as they are usually more than one and could vary from 1 to 10. They should appear one above the other. I found this: "Here is a little work around. The only thing the user needs to do is hit enter without anything else on a line and it will close out"

Code:

#!/usr/bin/ksh
word=a
until [[ $word = "" ]];do

[code]....

I tried to use it and modify for my needs but I failed, I don't realize yet how can I use it. If possible, I would like to use the until loop like the above example just for learning purposes but any other form will be accepted as well.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Terminal - 'unable To Read Input Images'

Apr 28, 2010

1.) Whenever i am starting a new instance of terminal, it is giving messages 'unable to read input images' five times. Actually i had run a shell script that gave this message, but why is it appearing every time, i am opening a new terminal, (that script is already over and it generated the required outputs)? Because of this, when i run 'ls' command, it is showing all the files and directories with the same color, otherwise it used to show them in different colors.

2.) Once my panel had crashed, then i have made a new panel, but after that my instant messenger icon is no more keeps sitting on the system tray as it used to do before, it closes as i close its window otherwise even after closing the window, it used to keep me logged in and the icon use to be there at system tray.

3.) automount for usbdrive not working? Note: all these problems are there only in my own user account. Other user account like root and guest has everything correct.

Debian Programming :: Check If Files Exists By Read Input From A File

Jul 27, 2013

I need a script that dose the following checks if files exists by read input from a file then compares them to the files listed in the directory if they don’t exists the script would report back which file dose not exists. I also need to format the output so that files are grouped in different groups, group A, B, and C and etc based on file name. I would like the output of that do not exists files to be sorted based on second number in the file name than group according. I understand some of the basics of bash scripting something along of the lines of a loop and if statements might do the trick. Below is what I have so far. I don’t car so much about the script reporting back the file exists I prefer to only know if the file is missing and is less than 3 days old. Problem is if a file dose not exists in the reports file the test compares against the wrong file.

Group A

Foo22000.tar.gz
Foo22010.tar.gz

Group B

foo25000.tar.gz
foo25100.tar.gz

Group C

foo26000.tar.gz

Programming :: Bash - Read User Input: URLs Without The Enter Key Stroke?

Sep 23, 2010

Here's a challenge I've been struggling for months with:

I have a bash script that reads URL addresses of our internal server and then executes some test commands on them. Something like this:

Code:
read -p "Enter URL: " url
sh execute-what-ever-to $url

After copy-pasting the URL the user taps the enter key and the script proceeds, but here comes the tricky part: I want this to work without the need to press the enter key after copy-pasting the URL.

"read -n" does not work in this case, as the URLs vary greatly in length. However, the URLs always end to the same string. They could be like "http://url1/END", "http://url2/END" and so on. So this ending string "END" could be theoretically used to recognize that the whole URL has been pasted.
