General :: Script With Funtions, Everything Worked Until 15 Minutes Ago?
Apr 28, 2011
made a script with funtions, everything worked until 15 minutes ago, and i can't figure out what did go wrong.I think it has to do something with the 3 first rules of code... but for my opinion that should be fine (i used '777' just to be sure)
Code:
test_mount() {
$touch /current_mount

I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.
I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:
$ time mencoder -really-quiet -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable:audiorate=32000:alsa:adevice=hw.1:input=0:amode=1:normid=11 -endpos 00:10:00 -ovc copy -oac pcm -of rawaudio -o test-32000.wav tv://69
real 9m54.886s
user 0m5.536s
sys 0m1.740s
$ ls -l test-32000.wav
-rw-r--r--@ 1 martin martin 76800000 Mar 15 17:20 test-32000.wav
Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?
Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:
CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec
Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?

Code: su -c "upgradepkg mozilla-firefox-3.6.4-x86_64-1_slack13.0.txz" The result was as follows:

Does anyone know how I might enable my boot to Ubuntu again? Here is what I have found but do not know what I should fool with. I thought I would ask for help before I screw it up worse.I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed inside W7 effectivly creating a dual boot system. It's been running fine for about 2 months. Now when I try to boot into Ubuntu by selecting the boot Ubuntu option in the Windows Boot Manager, it fails and goes back to Windows Boot Manager. There are 2 screens that flash by in about 1/2 a second when enter is pressed after the ubuntu selection and before it reverts again to the Boot Manager. With the help of a camera and good timing, I captured a picture of the text displayed.
The first screen displays;Try (hd0, 0) NTFS5 No wubildrTry (hd0, 1) NTFS5 _The second screen displays;error unknown command loadfonterror file not foundIn the windows C: drive I find the 2 files; C:wubildr created 12/19/10 size 87kbC:wubildr.mbr created 11/7/10 size 8kb (created the date I installed Ubuntu)In C:ubuntuwinboot... I find the same two files with the same size and creation dates as in the windows c: drive. In addition I also find a file, C:ubuntuwinboot.wubuildr.cfg, created 11/7/10, size 2kb, described as a MS Office Outlook configuration file.There are also a files;C:ubuntudisksootgrub but the grub directory is empty. The grub directory was created 11/7/10. Should there be a file in the grub directory?

I guess in most cases when extracting a tar achive ,we will get a directory with the same name as the archive file but different suffix. but in some unlucky case, as I met today, after extract a tar bar I find lots of files spread in the working directory, which is really nuisance.so what I want to learn from you is that how can I move thoes newly created files ? I know it should be some "find plus rm" fancy approch there, but I don't know exactly how.

If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so.
There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

I am planning on running a script once every five minutes, and the syntax that comes to mind in doing this is the following:
Code:
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 * * * * /apps/<script>.pl
Is there a better syntax to use to accomplish this task, or is the above example the way to go?

I'm running a fullscreen display app which shows a 3D scene in OpenGL. The app runs continiously throughout the day unattended.
Here's the sequence of events in how it's loaded:
1) The computer is turned on, and boots into F11 (x86_64)
2) A non-privileged user is automatically logged on
3) The gnome startup applications list contains an entry for a loading script
4) The loading script waits for the network interface (eth0) to ccome up, then starts the display program
This all works just fine, except that about 30 minutes after the computer is turned on and the app starts running, the screen blanks out. Attaching a mouse to the system and moving it around a bit brings the screen back to life. Likewise, SSHing into the machine and killing / restarting the application works as well. Once either of these fixes has been performed, it runs flawlessly for the rest of the day.
I have turned off the screen saver, and set the power settings for monitor shutdown to 'never'.

I have a troubling issue. I log into Linux Mint 9 (fully up-to-date) on my Samsung Q320 laptop with power connected and after a few minutes it seems like the entire X session dies, I am logged out, all processes are killed and I am presented with the normal GDM login screen. When I first installed Linux Mint, this never happened. I have the NVidia closed-source driver installed and when the system logs me out, it immediately restarts X loading the NVidia driver which flashes the logo on screen. This all happens instantaneously, so it is not a reboot of the machine, just a restart of the display manager it seems.
There does not seem to be any cause for this. I have disabled all screen saver and power management settings that may lead my system to auto-logout of Gnome. The system log doesn't indicate anything unusual happening. Confused about where to to take it from here bar and fresh install of the OS. Perhaps there are some X11 logs I should be checking.
Update: Moved to Ubuntu 10.10 and its recommended NVidia driver and have not experienced this problem since.

Our home broadband (TWC/RoadRunner/San Diego) intermittently drops out for minutes at a time. In WinXP, I had a logger that would ping one or more sites (e.g. Yahoo.com), log the ping times, and display the data in an interactive graph. This was very useful in showing the ISP tech (I didn't know about Shibboleet then).The problem is still unsolved after two visits, but now I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I'm looking for a similar tool. I'm a Linux newb (i.e. "just write a script" isn't helpful at this point), so I'm hoping for something user-friendly with a GUI.Can anyone recommend a Linux utility that...Logs ping timesDisplays results graphicallyDoesn't require advanced Linux skills to set up

I'm running Fedora 14 and set the screensaver (in System>Preferences on the Gnome GUI) to activate after the computer is idle for 30 minutes. After the screensaver is activated, and a press a key or the mouse, the screen is back to normal -- no problem.After the screensaver has been activated once, however, it comes back on very quickly -- usually in 2 or 3 minutes if the computer is idle. The only way I have found to correct this (and set activation back at 30 minutes again) is to log out and back in again.How can I correct this, and automatically set screensaver activation back at 30 minutes each time the normal screen is reactivated?

I ran 11.1 for about a year and had only a few issues; but for some (stupid?) reason, decided to go to 11.2.
Now my hibernate does not work (it worked almost flawlessly on 11.1. Both from shutdown options and when closing the lid.
It seems to disconnect the ethernet, but then just reconnects and resumes normal operation.
This is a IBM T42 laptop. It also does not hibernate when I close the lid, which also worked fine on 11.1.
I can't leave this thing running all the time and I don't want to do a full shutdown every time I stop using it.
I've installed all the updates and upgrades.
