I know already how to find out the dat files containg a certain string
Code:
c=/path/
grep -R --include="*.dat" "Elements with small area" $c | cut -d: -f1>> ErrorEl.txt
but I don't know then how to get the element numbers(16294 and 17889 in the example above)

I have a file called Regions.ini that looks like this:
Code:
[Granite]
RegionUUID = 54ab7cd2-0e70-49b7-8020-8dbeb84c08d0
Location = 9991,10007
InternalAddress = 0.0.0.0
InternalPort = 9001
AllowAlternatePorts = False
ExternalHostName = 71.171.21.9
[Syenite]
RegionUUID = 8fc56fdd-0afd-4074-9432-0ae8f42b799f
Location = 9992,10007
InternalAddress = 0.0.0.0
InternalPort = 9000
AllowAlternatePorts = False
ExternalHostName = 71.171.21.9
What I need to do is find out what the IP address is after "ExternalHostName ="
After that I will need to compare that IP to whatismyip and if it's different then replace it but that is easy to do with sed. I just can't figure this simple hurdle out.

Below is extract of my file:
What I need is to replace "--destination-path=" with "--destination-path=/home/dest"
i.e. desired output is ----destination-path=/home/dest
I could achieve it with below command
$cat outgoing-xfer|grep destination-path|perl -pi -e "s/destination-path=/destination-path=/home/dest/g"
But the problem is that in this case i just wanted to append "/home/dest" for which I could easily escape "/" with just two "", but I wonder if i have a long path like "/a/b/c/d/e/f/g/h/i/j" I will have to escape so many /. Is there any other way by which I can avoid escaping forward slash.
I tried following:
But receiving follo error
Bareword found where operator expected at -e line 1, near "s/destination-path=/'destination-path=/home"
syntax error at -e line 1, near "s/destination-path=/'destination-path=/home"
Bad name after dest' at -e line 1. tried with enclosing in double quotes as well but in vain

I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:
number="1234567890"
number="22390"
I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.

Our home broadband (TWC/RoadRunner/San Diego) intermittently drops out for minutes at a time. In WinXP, I had a logger that would ping one or more sites (e.g. Yahoo.com), log the ping times, and display the data in an interactive graph. This was very useful in showing the ISP tech (I didn't know about Shibboleet then).The problem is still unsolved after two visits, but now I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I'm looking for a similar tool. I'm a Linux newb (i.e. "just write a script" isn't helpful at this point), so I'm hoping for something user-friendly with a GUI.Can anyone recommend a Linux utility that...Logs ping timesDisplays results graphicallyDoesn't require advanced Linux skills to set up

I want to search in my apache log, for events which have occurred say between 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. I have got few scripts/commands but they are not conclusive, some of then are trying to do an exact match(awk) and for some i am just getting the pattern wrong (eGrep)
I am running RHEL.
Apache log eg:
================================================================
10.92.120.129 - - [24/Jun/2011:01:29:07 -0500] "GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1" 302
================================================================
now if i want to find out the logs from 1 PM to 2 PM
some example i had was:
cat <apache.log> | grep -E '07/Apr/20110[1-2]:[0-5][0-9]|02:00)'
small script in which i can pass the start time and end time range, and it should give an output of the rows which fall under that time range.

I'm running Fedora 14 and set the screensaver (in System>Preferences on the Gnome GUI) to activate after the computer is idle for 30 minutes. After the screensaver is activated, and a press a key or the mouse, the screen is back to normal -- no problem.After the screensaver has been activated once, however, it comes back on very quickly -- usually in 2 or 3 minutes if the computer is idle. The only way I have found to correct this (and set activation back at 30 minutes again) is to log out and back in again.How can I correct this, and automatically set screensaver activation back at 30 minutes each time the normal screen is reactivated?

Is there hopefully a way to search for an exact string in Man Pages? I know if I want to search for anything containing -c I can just do this.
Code:
/-c
How would I search for "-c"? I want only "-c" to show up. So I tried this.
Code:
/"-c"
It took me literally and looked for the quotes also.

What would be the grep command to redirect only the two search strings to a .txt file?

Sometimes it is possible to trick a Linux app by calling it like this:
HOME=/tmp/foo myapp
This would make myapp think /tmp/foo is the home directory, it won't try to get the user id, find its home directory via getpwent(). This is useful when myapp must be forced to dump some of its config files into a non-standard location different than ~.
A similar trick can be done like this: LANG=foo LC_ALL=bar myapp
This is useful when myapp needs to be called once with a different locale without having to make the change persistent by using the export bash built-in or even modify stuff in /etc/profile.
Is it possible to pull the same trick with time and date? The goal is to make an app use another time than the system ones. The final goal - to make timestamps that appear in logs/commit messages not being tied to the system time.

I am reading about jiffies in linux kernel. In one of the related example in the book Linux Device Driver, the author use
head -8 /proc/currentime
to print out some time information.
However this file is not present in my linux installation (kernel: 2.6.32-131.6.1.el6.x86_64). Why is it the case? Is it because the file path is no longer valid, or it is a distribution feature thing? It is not present in OSX too. What would be an equivalent in OSX?
