Dec 14, 2010Previously I had posted a question on how to make it run every 7 minutes between 7 and and 11pm.However now I found out what I really need is every 7 minuted between 7:30 and 11pm BUT it has to be every 7 minutes, it cannot reset itself on the top of every hour, so the */7 wont work.How can it that it will be every 7 minutes, so it will go at 7:30, 37,44,51, 58, 8:05, etc..

That's often convenient, but it reduces the amount of information someone would have to have in order to run commands as root. So how can I make sudo ask for the root password instead of the invoking user's password? I know it'd be done with a line in /etc/sudoers, but I can never seem to properly parse the BNF grammar in the man page to figure out exactly what to write.

Gnome has this option and I would like to see it in KDE if it exists in the default clock. I am willing to replace the default KDE clock with a seperate widget if one exists for this.

Dec 30, 2010I am setting up a thin client boot (over NFS) with x2go thinclient. So far everything works, the client boots over PXE, mounts the NFS dir on the server. But the x2go thinclient system does not install properly. I end up with a CLI prompt, to log in. It does not start X, not does it start the x2go client in a window managerless X session.
X2go is, in case you don't know it yet, a cool Linux X terminal session system, very much like Nomachines NXserver. I like it very much, since my experience, especially with freenx has not been good.
Now I am missing some Linux knowhow here: I know that after startup (the CLI part), the display manager is started (GDM or KDM), which starts the X server and shows the graphical login. Now since X2go does not properly setup and there is no documentation about the thinclient part, I will set it up myself.
I need the system to boot up, startx and then immediately start an X program (x2goclient), without having to log in before.
I found that putting a .xsession file in to the users home dir causes that script to be run when you invoke startx.But when I put startx in a script that runs as the last one in the runlevel (as in S05startx), it does not run at all.
What is the proper way to run X and a program on it directly, right at startup?

General :: Make Shared Keys .ssh/authorized_keys And Sudo Work Together?
Jul 15, 2010I've setup the .ssh/authorized_keys and am able to login with the new "user" using the pub/private key ... I have also added "user" to the sudoers list ... the problem I have now is when I try to execute a sudo command, something simple like:
$ sudo cd /root
it will prompt me for my password, which I enter, but it doesn't work (I am using the private key password I set)Also, ive disabled the users password using
$ passwd -l user
I am trying to harden my system ... the ultimate goal is to use pub/private keys to do logins versus simple password authentication. I've figured out how to set all that up via the authorized_keys file.Additionally I will ultimately prevent server logins through the root account. But before I do that I need sudo to work for a second user (the user which I will be login into the system with all the time).
For this second user I want to prevent regular password logins and force only pub/private key logins, if I don't lock the user via" passwd -l user ... then if i dont use a key, i can still get into the server with a regular password.But more importantly I need to get sudo to work with a pub/private key setup with a user whos had his/her password disabled.
1) I've adjusted /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set PasswordAuthentication no This will prevent ssh password logins (be sure to have a working public/private key setup prior to doing this
2) I've adjusted the sudoers list visudo and added
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
dimas ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
3) root is the only user account that will have a password, I am testing with two user accounts "dimas" and "sherry" which do not have a password set (passwords are blank, passwd -d user)
The above essentially prevents everyone from logging into the system with passwords (a public/private key must be setup). Additionally users in the sudoers list have admin abilities. They can also su to different accounts. So basically "dimas" can sudo su sherry, however "dimas can NOT do su sherry. Similarly any user NOT in the sudoers list can NOT do su user or sudo su user.

Mar 15, 2011I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.
I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?
Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:
CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec
Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?

Aug 5, 2010I need to change the time displayed in the task bar from a 24 hour clock to a 12 hour format. I could not find the relevant settings in OpenSuse 11.2 and same is the case for 11.3 as well.
how to make the change? I have tried System Settings ---> Computer Administration ---> Date & Time; but I was not able to make the desired change.
Similarly, I have a digital clock widget that shows GMT + 5.5 hours and I need to change that to 12 hour format as well.

"checkinstall" seems to be not installed "sudo apt-get make" does not work. I have no internet connection with linux, because I have no idea how I install the network card. Jun 25, 2010After finally getting libptp2 to compile I find that ptpcam does not work. This has worked perfectly fine before with the same camera using Slackware 12.0, I am now using Slackware 13.1 and ptpcam will simply not work. The error is as follows:

I have tried to reset with "ptpcam -r", I have also tried to disconnect and reconnect the camera to the USB system, I have tried to reboot the computer, I have tried to use different versions of libptp2 -- all to no avail. The strace shows the issue is apparently a failed ioctl(), although I have no idea why it fails:
