General :: Sharing Files Over LAN Without Password

Jun 6, 2010

I am at a total loss. For all intents and purposes - sharing files over a lan without a password between this ubuntu 10.04 machine and my wifes laptop (windows 7) should be trouble free.I've installed samba, and created an smb.conf file in /etc/samba

I want to note that I was using Arch Linux and this exact setup worked flawlessly. Why on earth would it not work the same in Ubuntu? Is it not the same Samba??

General :: Sharing Configuration (.*rc Files) Between Normal User Account And Root

Oct 2, 2010

On a Fedora Core box, I have a normal non-privileged user and I also have sole access to the root account. Because I am the only administrator of this box, I frequently su over to root for administrative tasks. The problem is that many of the user configuration I've become accustomed to are only configured on my day-to-day account (.vimrc, .bashrc, .screenrc, etc). Other than giving my day-to-day user account privileges to perform administration tasks, how would I go about sharing configuration between these two accounts?

Ubuntu Networking :: File Sharing On LAN / Password & Quota

Nov 2, 2010

I was wondering if it was possible within Ubuntu to:

a) Make a shared folder to the extent that people can view it but to access/open it requires a password.
b) Set that folder to have a set size (quota) so that people putting files onto the store/folder don't flood my computer with video/music.

I am currently at Loughborough University and am on their LAN as I type.So guys/gals are there any programs on the synaptic that do such a job or does Ubuntu already have an inbuilt way of doing that.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Gnome Password Manager Between Multiple Accounts

May 17, 2010

I use gnome password manager. It stores encrypted passwords in the ~/.gpass directory.I have 2 users, johnny, and audio. My default gpass setup is at /home/johnny/.gpass I've created a group called gpassusers and added johnny and audio. I chgrp'd /home/johnny/.gpass to gpassusers. I chmod'd /home/johnny/.gpass 770 (to give group access) I then created a symlink as follows

Code:

ln -s /home/johnny/.gpass /home/audio/.gpass

when I try to cd into /home/audio/.gpass I get

Code:

audio@picard:~$ cd .gpass
bash: cd: .gpass: Permission denied

for sanity's sake, here's the ls of johnny's home directory

Code:

drwxrwx--- 2 johnny gpassusers 4096 2010-05-17 19:34 .gpass

and here's the ls of audio's home directory

Code:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 audio audio 19 2010-05-17 19:34 .gpass -> /home/johnny/.gpass

and just to verify groups are set up properly

Code:

audio@picard:~$ groups audio
audio : audio adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape dip video plugdev fuse admin gpassusers
audio@picard:~$ groups johnny

Debian :: Sharing A Lot Of Files

Jan 10, 2016

I have been a happy linux user for some years now, even at my work i slowly changed windows to Debian in my computer. I need to share files to others computers (windows 7 and linux).

I have debian stable, xfce and samba whit a public folder. This setup has worked great whit a reasonable number of files ( under 1000) but now i have almost 10.000 and is getting too slow to scan the files when i enter the folder (in the client side, both windows and linux machines) so i think the problem is in the server side (my debian+samba). The files are not heavy (100kb to 2mb) the problem seems to be how much files there are.

Sharing IS WORKING but i would need it to be FASTER, So i need to share the files whit 4 pc running different OS

Ideas:

1) i could tweak samba to make a better job. I have tryed some configurations i found in forums but problems remains. I read that i could make a cron job to LS to the network folder every minute, so it will be ready when i need it, but this solution seems to me very inefficient, using a lot of cpu in the others machines

2) i could change the sharing software. Maybe samba is limited and there are others better way to share a lot of files. I could even install a debian-server version that is more prepared to do this job (if they are)

3) I could buy a router whit a usb 3.0 and attach a external hard drive. I already own an external hard drive that is usb 3.0. This should be more easy and even better (router never turn off so files would be always avaible) but i dont know if this will be faster or slower until i try it, which means to spend money. I could buy the router linksis Cysco EA6200: [URL]

Server :: Sharing Files Via The Internet?

Jul 30, 2011

I have a non-profit company. Currently we are using Dropbox to store and share files. We have the free 2 gig account and we are quickly running out of space. Naturally, we don't have a lot of money so I'm looking for a cheap alternative. I thought I might be able to set up a linux server in my home (with a back-up drive) do to the same thing. I want my board members and staff to be able to access these files from their homes or jobs and to be able to manipulate the files on the server. I'd like to be able to control access levels so that I can limit access to certain files and folders. I have a tech background but none of the others do so FTP is not really an option. It needs to be as simple as if they were looking at a file on their pc. Is this possible or am I totally dreaming here?

Right now I'm using Ubuntu but I just downloaded Fedora 15 and plan to play around with that a bit. The pc's I have are P4 2.6 with 1G RAM.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Media Files On A NAS?

I have set up the NAS so that it operates with both CIFS and NFS file systems. I can see the CIFS file system in the Network part of Ubuntu 9.10 but am having trouble in getting programs to see it. Ideally I want to use F Spot or Picasa to view the photos and then also use one of the audio packages to play music around the house. Ubuntu :: Sharing Files With Samba In Windows XP?

Ubuntu :: Sharing Files Between Two Machines On Network?

Nov 4, 2010

I have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)

Ubuntu Servers :: Used For Sharing Files Between Companies?

I wanted to see if anyone knew of a system that can be used for sharing files between companies? What I am looking for is a web based system that will allow an engineer to upload drawings or CAD models and put them in a "mailbox" for someone at another company. Here are the requirements I need:

1. Any type of file can be uploaded with no restrictions of file size (needs to be able to handle several GB of CAD data).

2. Only the person who the files are intended for can see or download the files.

3. A record of all transactions (uploads & downloads) must be kept.

Basically, I need a web based mailbox system that can handle huge files. Anyone know of such a beast?

Ubuntu :: External Backup HD Sharing With Win 7 And OS Files

I assume Ubuntu will recognize a USB hard drive as an external flash drive, right? I also notice external SATA hard drive docking stations with USB interface are available, and I have not use them before. The devices takes internal SATA hard drive. If you have use them before, let me know how did you format it using Ubuntu or Windows7 while the drive is attached to the station.
