I am using linux for the first time. My linux distribution is RedHat 5.4 on a VMWare. On this machine, I went online and downloaded mozilla firefox.
The file I received is firefox-3.6.12.tar.bz2. I have tutorials on how to install from the rpm and yum commands, but these do not help when installing a .tar.bz2 file. Please explain how I can install this file.
created an empty .img file with dd associated it to /dev/loop0 with losetup created a partition in it with fdisk formatted such partition with mke2fs copied a custom GNU/Linux system into that partition
Now I'd like to make the .img file bootable by installing grub into its MBR and /boot directory. My goal is to load the .img file with qemu. It would be better if grub2 is used instead of grub legacy.
I have stood it for a long time. Have anyone changed it successfully ? Please tell me and all the friends viewed this thread.I often download login window theme package from http://art.gnome.org/themes/gdm_greeter , the file type is .tar.bz2 , but I don't know how to install it.

I am really trying to learn the heart of linux, and not rely on gui's and package managers for everything. I am trying to download firefox 3.6. I downloaded the arc file, and extracted it to my home folder, but I don't know what to do next. I am also clueless as to how to install tar or tar.gz files, and tell them where to go, etc. Firefox is the priority question here. I am sure I can get it from the package manager, but I want to learn to do it with the arc files, and tar files, etc, and not rely on the gui for everything like in Windows. I am a Linux newbie, converting to Linux for hobby and educational purposes, but I have no direction, or no sense of where to go, or how to learn. I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS.
I have a tar.gz file that I am trying to install - In trying to convert it to a rpm file I extracted it to its own directory and ended up with a heap of .svg files - how do I install from here?

I am having a problem installing a game that is a .bin file. I have looked through various forums, and on Google, but can only find how to install .exe through emulation, open .zip, and other formats. I am using Dreamlinux Xfce desktop (Which to my understanding is Debian based). I pretty much have to face the fact can't figure out s**t on here.
I have tried running it from the terminal in these ways:
And some command I came across- $ Chmod (there was more to this command line but I forget it, found it on google, it ends with: +1 run)
I don't really grasp alot of the commands (I can look up DIR, run files, ya know ... simple stuff) and have spent most of the time just setting my OS to work, and this .bin is my first shot at an install...

I had Ubuntu for awhile, now I installed Fedora12, I'm trying to follow directions to install a program from source code (tar.gz file) I have the February 2010 issue of Linux Format, and am trying to follow it step by step. I copied gnurobbo off their disk to my desk top, which copied it. Then I did the cd command, then I did the ls command and it didn't show me anything but a line saying desktop and a few other things like pictures movies etc. so I did cd gnurobbo-0.64 and it says no such file. When I try to install ctags for vim editor, it gives me the following error. error while loading shared libraries: libldap.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
When I look into the /usr/lib folder, the file is naturally missing. I have this file.
When I tried to rename the soft link to libldap.so.2 it gave me a segmentation fault.
