General :: Proper Method To Eliminate Previous Boot Images On Kubuntu?

Jul 28, 2010

Every time kubuntu updates its headers/boot image I get another version on disk in /boot. These also show up in menu choices when I boot. I currently have 7 or 8 versions and would like to get down to three or four.

In the past I just deleted the files of related versions from /boot but is this the preferred method? Is there a better/safer way to get rid of old kernels?

General :: Proper Method To Install Slackware / OpenSuSe As Dual Boot?

Jan 5, 2011

I just received my Slackware 13.1 & the 'Official Guide to Slackware Linux' book. I know that there is a big learning curve to use Slackware and that is why I purchased it - according to Distrowatch, "...if you learn Slackware, you learn Linux!" But, while I am 'learning Linux', I would still like to have a linux distro installed that would be more of a 'no-brainer'.

So the question is, which distro should I install first, Slackware or say, OpenSuse? I know that if I were going to dual-boot with XP, that XP should be installed first - does order matter for 2 linux distros too? Also, are there any points to remember to do during the installation processes so that I end up with a working, dual-boot computer?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install Kubuntu Using Any Method

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to get Kubuntu 10.04 (x64) installed and everything I do fails, hard. I don't have exact details at the moment since this is a process I've been slowly working on for the last couple weeks, but here's a quick rundown:

- Can boot into the Live CD environment fine. When attempting to install from there, the installer sees my drives incorrectly. If I remember correctly, it views my 2nd drive fine (of 3 identical drives), but it thinks my other two drives are part of a raid setup (they're not supposed to be). I could probably install on here, but I'm not about to risk my existing XP install to try.

- When I try to use wubi to install in Windows, it appears to setup the installation fine, but upon restarting it tells me that it cannot find the ubuntu.iso file and that my drive is probably dirty (run chkdsk). It still says this even after running chkdsk and restarting gracefully.

- I've run the "Check CD for defects" thing and it says the CD is okay. My memory seems to be fine as well.

- I've 3 identical Seagate 250gb SATA drives installed on a MSI k9a2 platinum board. These are not setup in any kind of RAID setup.

Ubuntu Installation :: Way To Get Liveboot Cd Of Previous Version Of Kubuntu That Worked?

Apr 29, 2011

I upgraded my system today from Kubuntu 10.10 (or whatever the last full release was) to 11.04 using the automated web process. I know, I know, I should have tested off a live cd or a thumb drive, foolish mistake. On upgrade the video card works, and it boots fine... but I have no keyboard and mouse. I checked the forums and realized that maybe it was a problem with the brand of keyboard and mouse I was using. so I've tried four manufacturers (even tried switching between wired and bluetooth) to no avail.I've also tried starting in recovery mode, but the problem persists.

To be specific, my bios sees the hardware just fine, and I'm able to hold down shift and pull up the selection options pre-OS, and select which one to run... and I can see the red optical light on the mouse no problem, so it's not a defect of either the motherboard or the input devices themselves. However, once in the OS, in recovery mode, or anything else, I'm left without a keyboard or mouse. As my system only has USB ports and not PS2, I can't check a hardware spec beyond what I've tried. Also, it doesn't work if I select the "boot into an older version of linux" which is odd.Can someone make a recommendation? Is there a way to get a liveboot cd of the previous version of Kubuntu that worked?

General :: Any Proper Way To Change Grub Boot Order

Feb 13, 2010

I am a linux noob and that is the reason I want to boot my windows xp by default. Now kubuntu boots first. I've googled how to do this but the topics of other people with the same 'problem' were old or maybe incorrect. Because the official GRUB Ubuntu wiki says you should not change the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file manually. The first line on the .cfg file is also a warning: Do not edit this file. So it continued looking for a proper way to change the boot order. Then I found something about etc/grub.d and also etc/default/grub. The problem is I don't understand how to change the boot order using this.

Ubuntu :: Konqueror Stopped Displaying Background Images (Kubuntu 4.4.5)?

Feb 11, 2011

I've been using Konqueror for years, but I hadn't ever tried playing with the Appearance > Stylesheets settings in the Settings > Options > WebBrowsing menu. Now, I'm regretting it.

Here's exactly what I did:

1. Went to that Appearance > Stylesheets and clicked on "Use accessibility stylesheet," then Customize.

2. The "Suppress Background Images" option was checked. I unchecked it, because I wanted it to display them.

3. Clicked Close, then Apply.

Then I reloaded a page, and for some reason, it wouldn't display the background images! (Odd, because I unchecked that box.) So I went back into the same menu, chose "Use default stylesheet", OK, and reloaded the page. Nothing changed. Now, every web page I go to doesn't display background images. Other than that, everything looks identical -- it's obviously loading each website's stylesheet, because all of the DIVs and such are in the right place wherever I go. Just . . . no background images.

Ubuntu :: Eliminate GRUB Druing Startup (keywords: Dual-boot)?

Jun 17, 2011

I don't know why its called "GRUB 2" while it is actually GRUB 1.98 or 1.99. Anyway. So here's the thing. Due to the fact that I am dual-booting Ubuntu + Windows XP, my GRUB menu would show up during boot with or without me holding down SHIFT. This takes several seconds. What I'd like to do is that GRUB does not show up at all during "normal" boot and only shows up when I hold down the SHIFT right after BIOS POST.

Ubuntu :: Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

Apr 16, 2011

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.

All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

General :: Replace DVD / CD Install Images With USB Images

Sep 21, 2009

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.

Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

Ubuntu Installation :: Previous Linux Version Boot

May 14, 2011

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. on boot up I sometimes get only the purple screen freeze and sometimes I actually get to the grub menu. I select the generic kernel and get the black screen freeze. same if I do the recovery mode. but if I get lucky on a reboot and can get the grub menu up again, I select previous linux version and then select 2.6.35 generic and it will boot into 11.04 with Unity. So, how can I get this thing to boot normal with the correct kernel version? I am fairly new to this linux world and don't want to have to go back to windows if I can help it.
