I've never observed this problem neither did any of my colleagues trying to SSH into the same system. If I try logging into my server using a wrong username and then press ^C to terminate or exhaust my password attempts, I am locked out for at least an hour. Is there something I can do on my end to fix this problem?

Just like the title says, if I were to try to run anything through gksu and accidentally put in an incorrect password, instead of the gksu window coming up again, it would just terminate.

am using RHEL 5 ,i would like the system to send me an email for every time some one attempts to login to the server remotely. i have created the emailing script in perl and it works. but i want it to be triggered if someone tries to access the server. how can this be possible
View 9 Replies View RelatedI try to setup a small Debian system running on command line. Remote access shall be possible via ssh (for now also telnet) and a serial connected minicom via getty. I need the serial access as fallback in case the network is down.
As long as the package adduser is not installed, I can login as root via telnet and getty without problem. But from the moment "adduser" is installed with apt-get, the serial root login always fails after entering the right password with the message "Login incorrect". Even de-installing "adduser", or using a brand new "adduser test" user. When installing and using SSH it allows to login successfully, like telnet.
BTW: A dangerous behavior I observed with telnet: When I opening the connection via telnet, I'm immediately logged in as root - without asking for a password! I set a password with passwd which also is requested by SSH and getty (before the adduser installation) but not by telnet?!?!?
The /var/log/messages adds a line if login with su, but nothing when fails with getty

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10. In the process of trying to install openafs, I messed w/etc/pam. d/common-auth and /etc/pam.d/common-session. So, now I can't login to my machine. Loging in using the console gives the message module is unknown.I'm unable to log in in recovery-mode: the system freezes at the recovery menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to try KDE4 and would like the change the clock on the panel to display 12 hour format and not the default 24hour format but i can not find where to change this option currently the clock looks like the attached picture. Gnome has this option and I would like to see it in KDE if it exists in the default clock. I am willing to replace the default KDE clock with a seperate widget if one exists for this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up an Ubuntu 10.04 system; installed open-ssh. I'll call this box A. I also have an older box B with Debian. From A I can log into B via the usual way (ssh <user>@<IP>). The 1st attempt at this I was presented with the 'unknown host' warnings & elected to accept it. However, from B when I try logging into A there is no response at all -- no warnings, nothing. I have to ctrl-C back to the prompt. I can successfully ping A from B though. I CAN connect to A from a Windows box using PuTTY as an ssh client with all default settings. Once connected I can log in. Why no response from A when trying to log in from B?

View 5 Replies View RelatedJust a little bit of back history here. I created this server when Red Hat 9 was the latest greatest thing and it has been running like a champ ever since. Recently, it started locking up when I would enter X11. I thought the problem might be a power supply as it was making some noise, I switched it out, got rid of the noise, but, not the lock up.I have to admit, I am not much of a tinkerer when it comes to Linux, I will install and get the things I want to work working, then leave it alone, typically it runs for years and years with no problem. Nothing has been installed or changed on this box. Absolutely everything works fine, with the exception of X11, which did work for 10 years. Now it freezes within 1-5 minutes of logging in (if I stay at the username and password screen it seems to run fine). If I run the failsafe windows manager, it seems to also run fine. If I run KDE or Gnome, the mouse will still move around the screen, but, nothing will respond.

From all the search I did, I narrowed this down to be a pam configuration issue. I checked that the /etc/securetty has an entry "/dev/ttyS0" to allow root to logon via serial console - so I ruled out this file to be a cause for that error. Few files that I am not entirely sure are as below:

I've searched lot on forums but couldn't find a related post. My problem is I want to hide my mail folders when login attempt in Evolution has failed. I dont use Remember password option so everytime I'm prompted for password.

A few minutes ago I was using google chrome when suddenly the scroll-lock indicator on my keyboard turned on... I pressed the scroll-lock key, but nothing happened, the light remained. I need to change the time displayed in the task bar from a 24 hour clock to a 12 hour format. I could not find the relevant settings in OpenSuse 11.2 and same is the case for 11.3 as well.
how to make the change? I have tried System Settings ---> Computer Administration ---> Date & Time; but I was not able to make the desired change.
Similarly, I have a digital clock widget that shows GMT + 5.5 hours and I need to change that to 12 hour format as well.
I just switched over to Lubuntu, and so far, it's been great.It's rendering quite well with my laptop, even though the fan is constantly running.I've had some small annoyances that I haven't been able to figure out. As soon as I input my username and password the Circle icon for loading appears and nothing happens beyond that point. Mind you I've installed Ubuntu at least 20 times and I'm about fed up with it.I've installed Fedora-PPC and Vine Linux. They both allowed me to login without any problems. View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently, ive been having this problem with ubuntu in which while im watching a movie and thus not doing anything else, everything locks up except for the sound (if i attempt to move mouse doens't work) and then it goes into the login screen. Previously, ubuntu would fade away into the login screen.
So is there any way to prevent ubuntu from going to the login screen if the user is not moving the mouse? non-fading login screen?
edit: oh and i also have this sometimes occuring problem where i type my password to login, it logs in, and then it immediately goes back to login screen. A second login works. probably not relevant
I have set up a user to login remotely to our Red Hat 5 server via SSH. A rule in our department firewall enables this user to login from a single static ip address. The ssh port on our server is 22. I am able to login to port 22 from locations within our department firewall. Our administrator says the firewall configuration is unchanged. The remote user had been successful logging in. But now the remote user gets a Connection Timed Out message, before being asked to authenticate by the server.
I regenerated security keys, but the remote user still gets the connection timed out message. (I can login locally with the new keys). I suspect either a firewall or an authentication problem--inclining a firewall problem. Am I correct? Is there a Linux command to check whether port 22 is available or blocked, prior even to authentication, for login from the user's remote location?
I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and after to 10.10 alpha. After both dist-upgrade, the login screen that appears is from version 9.10. How I can update to the new login screen? It's possible?

I have vsftp executable and configuration file recieved from windriver. earlier i was not able to run this executable, but after few changes in vsftpd.conf now i am able to run vsftpd server. But when I try to connect to this server from another system I am getting above error.
I am currently running LTSP on Ubuntu 10.04. It is a dual gig nic setup with 16GB of ram and dual AMD quad core 2.4s. I installed all the latest updates as well as likewise-open so we can use AD authentication. When testing the configuration in the lab, I boot 32 clients that successfully reach the login screen. Here comes the interesting part, I can log in, using all unique AD accounts, up to 22 clients. When I attempt to log in to the 23rd client LTSP hangs. If I restart a client it will retrieve an IP address, but TFTP will eventually time out. All of the clients are connected to a Gigabit switch along with the server so network speeds are not an issue. When I run system monitor it only shows 3.6GB of memory in use and the processors are all under 10% utilization. I have beating my head against this issue for 2 days .
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu Server 10.4.2 LTS (32-bit) on Virtualbox 4.0.6 The install went great everything seemed to work. But after it rebooted for the first time when install completed, it is prompting me for a username and password. Note, the only username and password i was prompted to set up was for non-admin stuff. So i tried this username and password i created during install, but it keeps saying 'login incorrect'. I have looked at other threads, although they are mostly for older Ubuntu Server versions, but i couldnt really find anything.
I tried to reinstall and go through the install slowly but still the same issue. i tried Ubuntu for username and no password, tried leaving username and password blank, tried root and the password i created... i tried everything I could think of...
I cant figure out why my server running fc14 keeps saying login incorrect 530. I am using gproftpd. I know that the login is correct though. For instance:
Lets say my user is "goober" and my pass is "fedora" and I go and type that in when I try and login to the ftp it says login incorrect.
When ever i try to login to my ftp server(linux, fedora) through filezilla or cuteftp then its giving error even if login details are correct. Its are working fine locally but remotelly its giving error when ever i try to connect to it using external ipaddres or domainname. the error is as follows Status:

One of my servers is displaying the error as login incorrect even after giving the correct password. Once I restarted the Virtual Machine and after that it is accepting the same password to login. I am not able to find out the problem, why the server is not able to validate the password until the virtual machine gets rebooted.

I get "Login incorrect" when I try to authenticate, although I am sure it is the right user-password (I even changed it using passwd on server's shell and tried again with the new one). The funny thing is even if I purge the proftpd package and install vsftpd instead - it doesn't help - I can't log in. But I can log in with ssh.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to connect to VSFTPD via Filezilla from a windows machine, but regardless of which user name I use I get a "530 Login incorrect" error. I have tried turning off the firewalls on both the CentOS and Windows side of things with no result. I disabled the SSL/TLS commands in the config file, also with no change. I tried a couple of different FTP clients, but got similar results regardless of which client I used. I have been going over man pages and documentation for a couple of days now, but cannot come up with an answer. I suspect it lies in my configuration, but I got the same results when I reverted my config file back to the original. what else I can do? One other note is that I am attempting to connect via a LAN, at this point I don't care if it works across the WAN as I only intend to use it to upload files to my web server.

Today I have installed Linux SUSE 11.2 . At installation, I was asked for user-name and password. I edit this correctly.
At the end of the installation, the system reboots until the mask 'user name' and 'password' will be displayed. When I edit my user-name and the password the system said, that the login is not correct.
First, I think, I have forgetten my password an do a new installation of Linus SUSE 11.2 . Whatever, the same problem ist still there.
I have just bought a PC with SUSE 10.1-0. The first time I started the PC an installation menu appeared. I didn't define a user name, thinking that it should log in automatically (as in Windows occurs), but now I can't go farther from the Welcome screen, due to the system is asking me de user and password, but I didn't introduce nothing! Leaving username and password in blank didn't solve the matter.
I can see the admin screen (pressing F10) but I am not able to find any user to log (logically) and I can't include new users from there.
I have also tried to install Windows XP modifying the BIOS but the system returns a message (once in the WinXP installation program) about an error called 4096, about the file i386halaacpi.dll, which is unable to find (something about the HAL), so I am afraid that my (new) RAM memory is damaged.
What could I do? The system is for an old person, so I would like to install finally WinXP and delete Suse.
Acer 5250-BZ475 laptop, fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Boots up beautifully as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. Otherwise, I get to the login screen and have just enough time to start typing in my password before the entire system hangs hard - no mouse, no keyboard, can't even get to a terminal, nothing. Have to hard power off the machine.
It seems to be a problem with the wireless card trying to initialize, but there doesn't seem to be a bios option to disable wireless on this laptop, so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to fix this problem. By the way, wireless works fine if I boot up with a cable connected - I can see all the wireless access points in my area no problem. I just can't boot without a wired connection, which makes my laptop more or less useless when I'm away from home with it.
