General :: Feature-rich Disk-based Personal Backup Program For?
Sep 4, 2011
Could you suggest feature-rich disk-based personal backup program for Linux (and I've seen a few)?
I want to do nightly backups of the whole system and be able to rollback to any of last 7 days. And, it must be incremental backups. What tool should I use? The tutorials I've read about rsync tell only how to store latest incremental backup and I need last 7.

I've been looking for a alternative terminal to work in while using F15. I've done some Googleing and came across Konsole as being the most feature rich terminal. I'd like a terminal that provides a lot of features so I could possibly increase my efficiency. If something is KDE like Konsole does that mean I have to install the whole KDE environment? If so is there any Fedora terminal alternatives?

Issue: I want to backup my system and be able to restore if/when my system crashes.
Setup: Thinkpad T61 running Sidux KDE3.
I want to back up the system files more than personal data. What I have found is that when I apt-get dist-upgrade the upgrade performs without error, but when I restart and login I get a black screen with a mouse. From the 'black screen' I can open yakuake with F12 and then launch applications and such from the command line. The point of this more troubleshooting right now. Later is so I won't need to do a complete reinstall.
What backup prog have you used that will backup the complete system and is easy to restore?

I have a simple issue that I think can be solved with several different methods. I basically want to create a personal server solution that allows me to do two things:
1.) I want to be able to remotely backup data to my server.
2.) I want to be able to pass traffic through it and use it as a proxy.
I am off to college next year and I want to leave a computer/server back home to do the two things stated above. I was thinking of using an Asus Eee Box PC like this:url
I want a low power reliable machine that will only be used as a remote solution. I won't be hooking up a monitor to it (that is, after I set it up).
It will be on 24/7 for easy access.
I will be accessing this server from a Windows 7 based machine.
I do not mind at all installing Linux on my server, but I am not an experienced coder so I will need software with a GUI that can help me set this all up.

socat - exec:'bash -li',pty,stderr,ctty -> bash: no job control in this shell
What options should I use to get fully fledged shell as I get with ssh/sshd? I want to be able to connect the shell to everything socat can handle (SOCKS 5, UDP, OpenSSL), but also to have a nice shell which correctly interprets all keys, various Ctrl+C/Ctrl+Z, tab completion, up/down keys (with remote history).
- Found "setsid" socat option. It fixes "no job control". Now trying to fix Ctrl+D.
- socat file:`tty`,raw,echo=0 exec:'bash -li', pty, stderr, setsid, sigint, sane. Not it handles Ctrl+D/Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+C well, I can start Vim inside it, remote history is OK.

How can rich text or HTML source code be obtained from the X clipboard? For example, if you copy some text from a web browser and paste it into kompozer, it pastes as HTML, with links etc. preserved. However, xclip -o for the same selection just outputs plain text. I'd like to pull the HTML out and into a text editor.

I've been given one of these ubiquitous usb-sleep buttons which is basically a supersimple usb-keyboard. It's a big button that sends a SLEEP keypress to the computer when you slam it. But that is pretty boring. I'd love to remap it to do something more fun but I can't figure out how to bind to only the sleep press from the button and not from my ordinary keyboard.
The button identifies as
Bus 001 Device 035: ID 1130:600d Tenx Technology, Inc.
I'd like to know if there's either
a way of mapping a key from a specific keyboard to an action OR a way of remapping the sleep key from a specific keyboard to a new key-code or something like that.

i'm looking for a reliable program to do backups to my desktop.(from the remote linux server....to my desktop )Preferably an FTP program that I can login to with Root access.... but most importantly, a program that will only copy over changed / new files after the first full backup. Thats the biggest problem I have currently.. when i do it with WinSCP, I usually backup the WHOLE entire /vhosts/ directory each and everytime. And its 2 GB's in size....takes forever when copying to desktop. I would only like changed / new files to be copied over after the first full backup.

I like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.
If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.

I am using Ubuntu and looking for a good editor to edit a file that is > 4GB. I just need to put content at the end and beginning of the file. I suppose I could use something like
cat "text to add" >> huge_file
To append to the file. Is that the route to go? What about prepending? In general, what is the best route if I wanted to edit somewhere in the middle?
I've tried VIM and it fails miserably. I assume emacs and nano would be even worse. What else is there? I assume to accomplish what I am looking for, the editor would have to be specifically designed for this by not keeping the entirety of the file's contents in memory.

I wonder if I can backup files from an ext partition to a ntfs partition and keeping all kind of metadata and file infos?!
With other words:
Can I backup a full linux system from a ext file system to a external ntfs partitioned disk using rsync -a (keeping all file permissions)?
Is something getting lost of a file (like permissions or anything... flags...) when copied / rsynced from ext to ntfs?
The thing is, that when I restore the stuff back from ntfs to ext, can I still use my system properly?
And can I backup files like photos from ext to ntfs without loosing any meta data?
Or asked more in general: What is the difference of a file on a ext partition compared to the same file on a ntfs partition?

I got myself a dell laptop from the local computer store. Its a used machine with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?

So my dad had me build this file server at his studio. His old server was a Mac running OS X with some backup software called 'Retrospect'.
He has two backup drives - two identical 2-terabyte external drives. Each week he brings in one, plugs it into the server and at a scheduled time it would start the backup. The following week he'd bring in the other drive and backup to that - swapping each week. If the drive was missing at the time of backup, Restrospect would display a message saying it needs the drive to do the backup.
Personally I don't really like the fact that he's relying on himself or someone else to plug in the drives and do the backups, but he's paranoid that a disaster could occur in which the computer gets destroyed (maybe a comet hitting his studio.).
what I'm wondering is - is there some sort of backup software out there for Linux with a GUI that can just show current backup progress (if one is occurring) and allow you to configure how the backups can occur? I can make the window pop-up automatically using cron I guess, after which it can be closed by someone in the studio.
I'm guessing maybe a front end for rsync would be good, but I haven't seen any that do anything besides letting you configure rsync. P.S. I guess I could check if the drive is there by doing a grep on blkid for whatever the backup drive's UUID is to check if it's there.

I have a repository which i setup using reprepro. I have some packages on there but it seems that the Ubuntu repositories have a more recent version of those packages. What I want to do is when someone does an apt-get install package-name, it downloads the packages from my repository (in respect of any updated versions in other ubuntu repositories). I would like to achieve this with zero configuration on the client. Ideally what I would want is to be able to just point the sources.list to my repository for all packages, and if the package does not exist in my repository, it then goes to look in the ubuntu repos.

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

I'm looking for a standalone backup manager with the following properties:
1) Easy scheduling.
2) Automatic encryption of backups
3) Ability to remove old backups based on total size, not just backup age. (to avoid overfilling backup media)
4) Since this is going onto a business-critical machine used by a techno-peasant, it needs to have a snazzy, graphical interface for easy monitoring and configuration.
I am sure I *could* write this myself, but I find it hard to believe that there isn't one out there already, and I am lazy. Unfortunately, there are also a very large number of backup programs out there with less than complete descriptions and I am getting tired of installing each in turn to see what it does.Has anyone stumbled across something like what I just described?

Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point? To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o

I have a RAID 5 array, md0, with three full-disk (non-partitioned) members, sdb, sdc, and sdd. My computer will hang during the AHCI BIOS if AHCI is enabled instead of IDE, if these drives are plugged in. I believe it may be because I'm using the whole disk, and the AHCI BIOS expects an MBR to be on the drive (I don't know why it would care).
Is there a way to convert the array to use members sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1, partitioned MBR with 0xFD RAID partitions?
